Cuban American Bar Association Condemns Racially Charged Video Game (thanks Chris Johnson and Gamasutra (registration required)) has word of the latest unhappy reaction to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, as the Cuban American Bar Association (CABA) has sent a letter "to the manufacturers of the video game... condemning the game's use of racially charged remarks promoting the hate and killing of Haitians and Cubans," demanding an apology to each group. They copy U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft and Florida Governor Jeb Bush , as they are also "seeking the removal of the offensive video game from store shelves throughout the country." Finally: "CABA's letter quotes the Haitian government spokesperson, Mr. Mario Dupuy, who stated, 'this racist game is psychologically extremely dangerous and is an incitement to genocide.'"

I don't think Rockstar should be forced to remove the line, as I'm a fan of the first ammendment, but it was a stupid line to have in the game in the first place. If the game had you going up against the jewish mafia in Brooklyn, I'm sure Rockstar would have had the foresight to keep a line like "kill the jews" out of the game. It was a dumb mistake on Rockstar's part. They should have named the gang, and I understand why Haitians could get pissed off about it, regardless of context. But these groups need to focus on real instances of racism, and grow up. Rockstar made a dumb mistake, but they shouldn't be pegged as bigots.

And Madbunny, as an "uber liberal" who hates political correctness, I would like to point out that it tends to be conservative groups that get a hair up their ass every time "objectionable" content pops up in movies, music, and videogames. See: Moral Majority, Tipper Gore, etc. etc.
