Ridl3y Scott & DRIV3R

Atari Signs Ridley Scott Associates to Deliver DRIV3R Original Live-Action Short Film (thanks Frans) has word that the upcoming installment in the Driver series, itself inspired by the movies, will return to Hollywood for promotion. Here's the deal:

Further extending its already deep ties within the entertainment community, Atari, Inc. today unveiled another "convergence first" between Hollywood and the interactive entertainment company. Atari announced that it has retained Ridley Scott Associates (RSA) - the commercial production company owned and run by legendary filmmakers Ridley and Tony Scott - to produce an original three-minute live-action film inspired by Atari's highly anticipated upcoming game, DRIV3R. The film short, which is the first of its kind in the video game industry, is titled "Run The Gauntlet" and will be the core component of both the DRIV3R web site, www.DRIV3R.com, and an extensive marketing and advertising campaign for DRIV3R being launched globally by Atari, beginning in late January.

Yeah, this game looks to be less about stunt driving than GTA, but from what i saw of the game clips there seems to be alot of pretty cool tricks you can do. I'm really psyched to see how this new physics engine they're talking about works out. the crash screenshots look incredible. As far as the movies go, I really liked the BMW shorts and i'm guessing they're not going to use the same guy in the Ridley Scott films, that wouldn't make a whole lot of sense really. I've heard tell that there's going to be a preview/trailer for the films posted on the main site soon.

I'm all for the comparison of driving and illegal activity in GTA and Driver, but in terms of gameplay they're frequently different. Driver features a system where if you can outdrive the police, you can escape them, which is markedly different from the situation in GTA, where you always run into another roadblock or waiting policecar unless you go through a specific powerup/pickup.

Where GTA could be compared to a very simple formula 'Stunts' game (or more recently 'trackmania' emphasising fun over complicated driving or game mechanics), Driver would be much closer to Gran Turismo (sp?), where the pleasure is to be had in appreciating the finer details of the driving and more complicated mechanics of the gameplay [doesn't quite work, but you may see what I mean].

...will this be a neutered version, to appease the New York Post reading crowd?

I heard some of the features include:
  • The character's hands are at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock on the steering wheel, and his seatbelt is always on.

  • There's a Christian channel on the radio.

  • You have to signal before every turn.

  • You can't do over the posted speed limit on the stretch of road you're driving on.

  • At an intersection, the person with the largest weapon has the right-of-way.

  • But that's all just rumor...

the vice city formula is far from overplayed in my eyes - I am all for another GTA... but I think Rockstar is probably the most qualified to provide that

Hmm, I was actually excited about this game until I heard about this. The vast majority of games with hype like this suck.

Driver was great, Driver 2 really should have been a ps2 game (loads times on the ps1 were painful, so I never really got far, and couldn't find my copy when i finally got a ps2).

But with all the hype, they're pretty much _forced_ to make it "the next GTA", which means more walking around, which I'm sure will prove quite boring (the games called DRIVER (well, DRIV3R)).

    Ah well.

Three minutes long? That's only about a third of the length of their other efforts for BMW. Maybe they'll just do a three minute collage using their efforts for Beemer Inc.

huh, I thought TOEE was their only bigtime screw-up so far

cant say I feel really confident about this game being a huge success... hopefully they copied enough of GTA

The question is whether Atari will bother to finish the game before they ship it. My guess is that the only thing they finish is the ability to sit in the car and honk the horn. Don't expect any support after that and don't believe anything that the ads claim will be in the game. They've proven themselves to be false advertisers with titles like WOTM. I won't be buying anything from them.

...with all the flack over GTA, how much driving and gunning will this game have in comparison? Will we be able to zip through the city in some nifty vehicles, using a half decent set of physics and an in-car view while sniping at baddies (improving on GTA), or, will this be a neutered version, to appease the New York Post reading crowd? Further, and completely unrelated, will this game look and run well on a PC or will it be another half-assed console port?

I think he means that you can't buy the company's history, and heritage, thus it's not really Atari nowadays, just another company that happens to share a name and logo.

That would be the intelligent way of arguing this point.

It was stolen. Money might have exchanged hands - but you cant TAKE SOMEONE ELSES NAME without stealing it. Did they invent the name? No. They stole it. Did they pay for the rights to use it? Sure... but THEY DIDNT INVENT IT.
