52. Re: THE STALKER ALPHA Jan 1, 2004, 06:06 Valtyr

Well, since I didn't get my hand on the Alpha I didn't know when it was dated from.

But hey, if people are impressed with an Alpha that old, that raises my hopes even more.

I don't even expect this to be the NEW halflife of it's time, but a decent, none-WWII FPS that requires more then running and gunning.

Please keep in mind that this version of the game is dated May 2002 and is very very old.

The leaked demo has working multiplayer

And for people who think there's nothing innovative about STALKER, name one other FPS set in Chernobyl. They fact they chose that location and are making it work instead of coughing up another World War 2 shooter is pretty impressive.

Well this version is for the press and yes, there is ALOT missing, There are only 2 maps, low quality textures, no AI, no physics, no vihecles, place holder sounds (taken from Counter-Strike), just 1 enemy and rats, no options, no PS2 for the specular and realtime shadows, no day and night cycle, AND alot more missing. So, there isnt much, but it gives you an idea what they are trying to come up with, and you will see how it will run on your computer.

The thing I am mostly looking forward to is CO-OP! There hasnt been a good co-op game for years. Serious Sam had it but that just run and gun, so the best co-op I have ever played was System Shock 2.

Before I buy a game I have doubts about I generally spend an hour reading all kinds of reviews, previews etc. about it.

I don't really look for the ultimate "This game sucks, or this gam is the best ever" kind of review, but I do look for how well the game runs, if there are any major bugs.

For consoles as well as PC games I also look as to if there are any major complaints about the controls setup etc. are mentioned.

I read about Stalker once, looked at a couple of screenshots and the game just felt right to me, so I won't spend time reading about it, I'll just buy iy when it's released and hope for the best

PS: Don't drink and post.

I also wanted to mention if you would be to play the leaked alpha to remember that this is probably a version ment for the press, and may have some or many features still missing either because they aren't impleted yet or the makers of the game simply didn't want anyone from the outside play with them yet.

/shrug - Just my 2 cents.

The basis of the gameplay gives the game great potential to succeed, but in the end it will be the depth of the AI that will ultimately deterimine the fate of the success of the game.

ok just asking. I thought it was just because of the big levels. there are far better games like operation flashpoint that have about 100 times as big maps and better visibility range. graphics look nice, but why is it a reason that its european? is there a reason why european games should be generally better than US for example? and innovations? I couldnt really see one innovation so far. well, the minigun is nice and that big level design also, but as I said that is nothing really new or innovating. its still a mainstream FPS that just looks nicer than others and has a few features that are not common...

It's a semi post-apocalyptic Fallout like game set around Chernobyl with the amazing graphics, an interesting looking plot, incredibly large and detailed levels, cool weapons, vehicles, and several RPG elements.

If they can pull it off, it may be one of the coolest games ever, especially if they pull through with multiplayer coop.

Perhaps the fact that:

a) It is european
b) It is not mainstream hl2 or doom3
c) It looks great
d) Unlike a certain other title, this early alpha apparently actually proved the game is real not fake hype.
e) It is more innovative than 90% of the titles out these days or coming out in the future

Anyone care to explain me what causes the hype about this game?

Minus the fact it's being made for a console.

just type 'g_god 1' in the console as soon as the game starts up.

There are lots of other commands. Just type 'help' in the console and a list will appear. Use Page Up and Down to scroll.

BTW thx for the tweak tip. I was trying to open and take a look at all the files in notepad but some "broke" and I had to extractthe game again.

Not quite, Spunky. Reviewers differ in oppinions as much as the players who actually buy these games. Case in point, Enter the Matrix. Generally considered a game that definitely failed to meet it's own standards of play. Was it fun? Sure as hell it was! I'm sorry, but a bad game in that regard is more up to the person playing it.

you said exactly what I wanted to say but I would have taken Halo as an example.

Hypothetically speaking, you could go into the user.itx file and turn on god mode. I'd imagine the command might be found somewhere in such a file. Of course I can't verify this.

Had I had any experience with this alpha or with the leaked HL2 beta, I might be inclined to say that I was a whole lot more impressed with Stalker. But who knows, really.

34. Theoretically speaking....Vote Quimby Dec 31, 2003, 00:48 Rictor

Speaking completely theoretically, how would one go about respawning after one is killed. IS there a command to this via the console? I would hate to, in theory, have to quit the game and then enter again every time some no good soldier decides to shoot me.

Again, theoretically speaking, I predict the game will run pretty nice on my system, even if it is rather top-of-the-line-in-2000. I can only run Prince of Persia at very low FPS, and yet I predict that STALKER will run at oh...about 22-23 FPS. The problem is, or rather would be if I had the alpha in my possession, that I either end up on a map surrounded by baddies and die very quickly, or end up on a map with no one on it and just run around looking for something to do.

I must say, that if I had the leaked version, I would certainly be impressed by the sky effects, as well as the game designer's ability to portray "bleakness" visually, while maintaining a very realistic environment.

33. Re: pre alpha lost :) Dec 30, 2003, 23:36 Mad Max RW

I figured out how to edit settings for the leaked STALKER alpha. Just open User.ltx in Notepad. Everything is in there. For high end cards it runs a lot nicer if you lower the framerate from the default 200 to 112, and min desired fps to 35. I also set it to high resolutions, 32 bit color, and other stuff.
