DOOM 3 Shots

The DOOM 3 Website has been updated (thanks SwanSong), and it now offers the game trailer that debuted at E3, a few wallpapers, and a batch of screenshots, a few of which (shots three, four, and six) appear to be new.

KaRRil;ion, I downloaded the new DNA drivers, and they kick ass. The framerate and image quality is greatly improved for the DX:IW demo (I have a p42.6c, 512mb pc3200, radeon9700), and it ran very smooth at 1024*768 with multisampling at 4x, and everything in game turned up. AA and AF set to appplication pref. They also REALLY REALLY improved the performance of the doom3 leak. I can play that on high detail now. HA HA HA !

70. Re: Doom III preorder in Best Buy Dec 8, 2003, 02:10 John

I went to Best Buy tonight and there were some pre-order boxes on the shelves. No date or nothing but inside is a poster and rebates for a 5700 ultra and wolfenstein platium.

Interesting.. the 5700 is the card I'm considering upgrading to next. Is the rebate only for those who pre-order? I'd check your link but the website is down now.

I don't know how DX:IW works, but lately a lot of games have features that cause AA not to work. Such as in Halo and Need For Speed Underground. In NFSU, you have to turn off motion blur and light trail to get AA to work.

So maybe there's a setting in DX that causes AA to fail. In Halo, you had to disable render targets in the ini file. AA would work, but the game would have a lot of graphical glitches. I had to play halo at 800*600 with no AA on a 21inch screen :-(

I had a Nividia 5900 Ultra 256MB, but with everyone hyping the ATI's I snagged a 9800 pro just to see. I honestly can't see a huge difference, but I play mostly Operation Flashpoint anyway.

In DX:IW I'm getting sick of the damned jaggies. For some reason that game shows them worse than anything. I guess I'll try upping the sampling. Someone over on the either the Ion Storm or Eidos forums said they got DX2 to run smooth as glass with 4x Multisampling using the DNA drivers. http://www.dna-drivers.nl I'm too chicken to try using them yet, but I might give it a shot. I'm still using catalyst 3.6 since I had issues with Jedi academy back when I was playing it. Maybe I'll update soon. supposedly ATI might have a fix for DX2 players soon anyway....like it'll really matter, heh.

I wonder if there will be a doom3 test(demo), like in Quake3.
But since this is mainly a SP game, don't know what to think

66. Doom Figures Dec 7, 2003, 01:24 Lord ALF

Just a note that the figures were/are created and produced by Reaper Miniatures out of Dallas Texas.

www.reapermini.com

While they don't sell them direct, they did at one time offer every creature from the games (Doom and DoomII) of which the ArchVile was the greatest IMHO.

There's still a few sites that have pics up of the figures:

...but having an actual value for it implies it is on.

Antialiasing (multisampling) smoothes jaggies by taking multiple samples of pixel color per pixel. Therefore, taking only one sample per pixel, by definition, means antialiasing is off.

If you just take one sample, it either hits an object or does not, creating jagged edges around polygons. Taking multiple samples at different locations within the pixel boundary, then averaging the color results blurs edges to make them look smoother.

Well, I think you should go ATI - superior image quality and higher framerate. It seems like your initial response would put you as the Nvidia "fanboy"...

Not at all, it's just that I've read plenty of reviews from 9800 owners, but virtually none from 5900 owners so I just wanted some of those specifically, not a string of replies about ATI, before I make a decision.

I don't have the energy to be a fanboy about anything

Go into your control panel and try to find a 1x AA setting. LOL

That is why it was worded as a question, which you left that part out of your quote. As not saying "off/0", but having an actual value for it implies it is on. But that is why I said it as a question!

"1x multisampling is still anti-aliasing on"

1x multi-sampling means anti-aliasing is OFF. Go into your control panel and try to find a 1x AA setting. LOL

I command you: download and install the 3.9 series.

Having had no problems with the 3.8s,

The card itself is fine, just a bit pricey and not quite up to par with the competition.

Anyway, do you need to upgrade right now? Basically, the new cards from both companies are going to be here sooner rather than later and they will both focus much more on the more advanced titles such as Half-Life 2, Doom 3, and the like.

Noting that my 9800xt did not, in fact, cure my mother's cancer :|,

Why not go with the 5950 instead? I'm actually considering the 5700 for my next upgrade (from a 4200). It's pretty good compared to the ATi cards of the same price range. I never buy the most expensive model. I'm planning on waiting to upgrade just after Doom3 or HL2 come out though so the prices are lower.. and I don't need a faster card now anyways. Hmm, unless X2 runs sluggish for me.

I'm running DX:IW at 1600x1200x32 with Bloom off, and Multisampling at 1x

Multisampling is anti-aliasing.

Perhaps not many people can get it to run good, because 1x multisampling is still anti-aliasing on? But that would not explain the crap performance of my system. Ahh well, if the game will not let you completely turn off AA, that is just another thing to point and laugh at, at this game!

I'm running DX:IW at 1600x1200x32 with Bloom off, and Multisampling at 1x. I don't have AA or anything enabled in the drivers.

Honestly I don't know what exactly the frame rate is, but while not perfectly smooth, it's not a slideshow. I made quite a few tweaks to the .ini files which I think helped.

I have a P4-2.8, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9800 pro 128mb,WinXP Pro. I'm still deciding if I like the game. If it's anything like the original, it'll take me a little while to get hooked.

Yipes... I'm glad I've been sticking with 3.7... I never upgraded when Radeon themselves included a warning with 3.8 not to upgrade unless you are having problems (which I wasn't)... and the 3.9s were causing problems too apparently.

Don't jump the gun, I'm using 3.8 and so are a lot of people I know. They work fine for us :0

Back on topic:

I hadn't seen the 'new' screenshots before so they're pretty cool. First time I've noticed that dog monster thing (yup I'm a noob) is half robot. Looks pretty sweet.

It would be nice to have an all out creepy shooter again, prolly counter the effects of the more involving HL2.

I thought it was important enough that I think anyone here with an ATI card should see it

Remember that I complained a few days ago about my computer crashing, losing image to my monitor, etc?

Yeah, I think I found what the problem was. ATI's 3.8 Catalyst, which apparently is the shittiest driver of all time.

http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=239162

If you're using this driver, I can confirm that it causes some NASTY problems, get rid of it asap.

Oh, and even though I don't know if I can run it, even though I rarely pay over $30 for a game, and even though I hate stupid video game nerdy figures, I think I might preorder just for the damn Pinky.

That thing rocks.
