IGN and GameSpy Announce Merger Agreement; Combination Will Create Web's Largest Network of Gaming Destination Sites confirms at least part of the recent rumor that GameSpy Industries was somehow in play (story), announcing that GameSpy is merging with IGN. Word is: "Because of their distinct audiences and strong loyalties, both the IGN.com and GameSpy.com brands will be retained. The companies expect to complete the merger in the first half of 2004."

Just look at BluesNews, Homelanfed and even Voodoo Extreme. This is the type of stuff that I want more of. I want the Gamespy of 1999. Is that wrong?

Absolutely no offense to Blues or any of these fine sites, but they are pretty much re-reporters (to coin an Old Man Murray phrase). The GSI network has its good and bad sites, but they are pretty consistent at attempting to create original content. They do lots of reviews, offer guides, editorials, columns, file download systems, etc. I like that they try to angle more towards original content than being a news portal (although they do have one - gamespydaily, which honestly is not as good as Blues. Hence why I am here; The right tool for the right job).
