Ships Ahoy - XIII

Ubi Soft sends word that XIII, the Unreal-engine cel-shaded shooter, has shipped in North America. Here's the deal:

SAN FRANCISCO - November 18, 2003 - Ubisoft(tm), one of the world's top game publishers, announced its highly anticipated, stylish shooter XIII shipped for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and PC. XIII is an epic, conspiracy-driven thriller set in a highly stylized graphic-novel world, starring the voices of David Duchovny as XIII, Eve as Major Jones, and Adam West as General Carrington. XIII is rated "M" (Mature) and retails for a suggested retail price of $49.99 on PlayStation 2 and $39.99 on the PC.

"For XIII, we sought to create a fresh, original first-person shooter experience. In the process, we created a game hailed as the most stylish game in 2003," said Tony Kee, vice president of marketing for Ubisoft. "We combined a compelling story with innovative, original gameplay for both single and multiplayer, delivering a game overflowing with style and even more substance."

As a secret agent suffering from amnesia, players unravel clues behind their true identity, while uncovering sinister plots against themselves, the U.S. government, and the recently assassinated U.S. president. XIII features the deepest story line of any first-person shooter, and players will be immersed in the game's graphic-novel world as they decide who is friend and foe in the ultimate government conspiracy. The game's cel-shaded graphics showcase its unique visual style, which pays homage to its comic roots. XIII also features a variety of exciting gameplay modes, including stealth, all-out action, collaborative gameplay, and innovative multiplayer modes.

I dont like it. I dont like comic style games anyway. Well, I do but I dont like them trying to be realistic. I loved Sam & Max for example and all other funny comic games. But this one just doesnt cut it. I bet I would like it if it was unrealistic and funny. I can almost imagine how much fun it would be in Multiplayer!

Jet Grind Radio didn't look crap to me, to me it was vibrant, colorful and highly animated. XIII definately doesn't look like crap to me, and could stand as one of the best "comic feel" styles put to plastic.

It's all about how it services the game. Some games, like XIII, benefit from it (imo). Other games, like the second Fur Fighters, just come off looking cheap.

Yeah I'm with you on the fun-factor. That is the bottom line. This is why Fallout 1 and 2 is still installed on my PC.

My opinion on cel-shaded games still stands though. They look like crap.

To me it doesn't mater if it is CGI, cell shaded or crayon...if the game is fun, that is all I need. And, at least from the demo, it seems like this game should be a good play.

Am I alone in thinking that cel-shaded games just look like crap?

To me it seems like a "high-tech" way to use poor art assets.

I think one of the bigger complaints from that review is the AI is lacking

be able to save anywhere in the pc version? Found it kind of annoying that you could not save in the demo version.

I know it 'heightens tension' and all that, not being able to save anywhere you want but still, I'd like it :-)

"It appears that most readers disagree giving it a much higher rating. "

i think that's because most readers play the game for about 10 minutes then post all over the place about how amazing it is. "real" reviewers (hopefully) play through the whole game before giving it a final score and this one seems to be a "it's cool at first, but gets old fast" kind of game. i guess we'll see. i'm looking forward to it myself!

Yeah.. you know I played the demo and I thought it was really fun, however I've seen several editors giving it 7.5-8.0 out of a 10 pts scale -- which seems rather low. It appears that most readers disagree giving it a much higher rating.

Hmmm...I actually thought the multiplayer was kinda fun. But the single player demo was simply amazing. I can't wait to get my hands on the whole thing.
