Digitalo Closes

HomeLAN Fed is reporting having received confirmation that Digitalo closed its doors on Monday of this week, leaving the last eight employees of the Florida-based developer looking for work. The cancellation of a couple of projects and disappointing sales of Devastation, their Unreal-engine shooter, are among the factors mentioned contributing to the company's demise. Word is that the Devastation forums remain open, but there will be no other future support or patches for the game.

I feel bad that people lost their jobs. The Devastation demo came out like it was still in beta stage. People are willing to beta test games at no cost so thier was no excuse for the release of such a demo. The devastation demo killed any chances the company had of breaking even and staying in business. I took them about a month to iron out the bugs they had in the game.

They could have refused to give a release date until the game went gold and just provide previews to hold people over. Giving them plenty of time to tweak the game, beta test and release a finished product. Their first demo just killed them!

I tried the SP demo, but when my teammates started firing into the wall trying to hit the enemy soldiers, and they basically ignored all commands - that's when I uninstalled it and resigned myself never to purchase the game. After reading on the forums about how few of the bugs were fixed and the lack of multiplayer servers, I'm very glad at my choice. They first released a screwed-up multiplayer demo that needed a 'performance fix'... then they had to change the weapon sound fx... did they do anything right?

You'd think both developers and publishers would learn from the mistakes of others... it's always sad when people lose their jobs, but many of the problems could have simply been avoided. However the game was mediocre at best even if the publisher had not rushed the game. I agree that this game was no better than most UT2K3 mods.

Oh well, live and learn I guess...

That's why I am so excited when I see a game released in tip-top shape like Tron 2.0, a true work of art with PROFESSIONAL standards.

interesting... don't forget how Monolith had started; Blood was described as boring and obsolete (I actually liked it anyway), Blood 2 is hated by many (never played more than the first 3 levels or so, so I can't judge it) and it was Shogo, their 3rd game, that gave them some descent respect. No one can expect the first game from a bunch of "industry beginners" to be perfect; they should have been given a second chance, IMHO...

Pushed? By whom? Arush doesn't sound like an Activision with insane release dates. Then again, I could be wrong.

You know what? I screwed up, I was going to post something I had read about Arush being a bunch of slavdriving pricks but while looking I realized I was thinking of the now defunct Sunstorm interactive. My bad.

I should just shut the hell up from now on

Actually I thought the rat bomb was pretty clever. The bugs sucked though and I hate being BS'd. I see people coming into threads here at Blue's talking about game haters, but experiences like Devestation and Echelon make a gamer weary...game is released before it's ready, fixes are promised, fixes never delivered, gamer gets screwed.

No one can deny that game companies are taking advantage of gamers' broadband connections to patch premature releases, which in itself is pure bullshit. But when they dont deliver after they get your money, that's fraud.

That's why I am so excited when I see a game released in tip-top shape like Tron 2.0, a true work of art with PROFESSIONAL standards.

The disappointment in sales could never compare to the disappointment of the unfortunate folks who actually purchased the game,, wanna take it off my hands cheep? As much as the game was cr#p some great talent was there. Hopefully all you out of work employees can get back on the horse and make your next game great! best of luck guys.

You just can't make a good game based off a rat bomb.

The MP demo sealed me not buying this one. It felt and played like an Unreal mod. It looked better than most mods, but played worse than some.

Maybe free games are pushing out the more generic shooters?

Shame. They were very helpful and nice people, but that doesn't cut it when you release a buggy nearly unplayable product.

as much as I wanted to like Devastation, it just wasn't a very good game at all. perhaps another 6 months of polsih wouldve made the difference but it almost seemed like they were pushed into releasing it before they were ready

What is it with developers going bust at the moment, i think thats 3 in less than 4 weeks

Well, I think in Digitalo's case it was just crappy product, crappy support...no big mystery.

Gee, I wonder why?

Still, I hope they'll find another job soon. It's no fun to be unemployed...
