Out of the Blue

I'm actually feeling quite a bit better today (thank you Cold-Eeze!), so contrary to my prediction of being an OTC drug fiend for a few days, I'm hoping to skip on the cold capsules today, trying to walk that fine line between feeling sick from my cold and feeling woozy from the cold meds.

I've got a new page format that we've been playing with that I hoped to show you in this space today for feedback... if all goes according to plan, I'll probably post a link to that sometime today to solicit feedback, so if that interests you, you may want to look for that later. Update: Here's the link. Some things are still being tweaked, and the retro colors checkbox should be returning, so don't sweat that for the time being. I'm interested in aesthetic feedback, but even more in compatibility issues if you are running an unusual browser and/or OS.

Woops!

Yes, that should be ViewSonic rather than Panasonic.

Come to think of it, Panasonic? What the heck was I thinking???

Not wanting an answer to that question ;P,

Yeah please Blue, put up the new layout. I haven't been able to see it yet since I'm apparently one of the few regulars who has a job that doesn't allow me to surf the web all day.

I am using a 22" now (Panasonic P225fb - w00t!) and am just testing out 1600x1200.

Ray - that's a Panasonic and not a Viewsonic? I'm just asking because I was considering buying a Viewsonic P225fb and thought it was strange that both companies would have the same model number... unless one company makes it for the other - maybe that's it.

Heh; I could just tolerate 1600x1200 on my old 19", but the refresh was too low. Even then, 1280x1024 was the norm for that monitor.

Wanting a H&D 2 demo,
Ray

Edit: Panasonic, ViewSonic - what is the difference???

Make the changes. Your supporters won't gripe, only the losers that like to fuss about such things. We like your site for the info it provides (as well as the interesting threads). It's the content, not the delivery!

Yes, I would say go for it, since nothing major seemed to be bonkered. Just things needed tweaking here and their.
And like nin said, somebody is always going to complain. I for one will nit-pick about little things

It also makes sense to do it over the weekend, when less news appears, in case you do brake something! But you also then have to be doing all this crap over the weekend, like nin said.

How easy is it to switch back and forth? If it is not that hard, you might just try switching to it, in the late evening when traffic is down(like tonight), and throwing the old layout back up during heavy traffic flow if things seem to not be working out proper like.

*edit*
nin, I hit 1152x768 on my 17 incher (it is an actually 17.1 viewable screen) I would go up one higher, but the refresh rate one step higher is only 60hz, and that is to hard on my eyes.

1600x1200 is a little small for me on this monitor, but I had a 20 inch and 1600x1200 was perfect for it (but it died on me!)

Recipies? There's some brand (Krustez?) that makes an "Orange Cranberry" muffin mix. Leave off the cranberries, and when it calls for milk or water, add in OJ instead. That makes some badass orange muffins!

Guess the whipserings I heard about the HL2 info were untrue. Sorry to disappoint. I had heard from some site (can't remember which one it was now) that their was gonna be some info on the release date. Oh well.

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22

I'm considering putting it up as the live format tomorrow so it can undergo some full-blown testing and evaluation.

Comments? Objections? Recipes?

People are gonna bitch no matter what you do. Better to test it out on a slow (news) traffic day (and ramp up) than on a Tuesday or Wednesday and it explode...

My thinking is it'll give you time to iron out the bugs before Mon-Friday when more of the news is posted...

Of course, this assumes you want to spend all weekend inside tweaking your website. I'm not sure that'd be the most fun thing in the world, and MrsBlue may think otherwise! (The leaves are changing color outside, and fall is upon us...etc.)

edit: 16x12?! Jeez Ray, how the hell do you read that? I've been told I have good vision, and I can't handle 1280x1024 on my 19" monitor...

Since there do not seem to be any major problems, give it a go.

But, pppplllleeeaaassseee look at / consider / implement some of our suggestions either tomorrow or very soon. I do think that top part is awfully cluttered and I hate having to go down to the middle of my 1600x1200 screen to start reading the site.

Do not get me started on the retro color thing...

As for recipes, sometimes I put in equal amounts of milk and coffee into my cup. Apply the extra-big helping of sugar at your own leisure.

Hoping hat Bronco guy stays quiet! ;P,

...since it's problematic to test the new format with the old one in place, and since the first test run did not reveal any show-stopper bugs for anyone, I'm considering putting it up as the live format tomorrow so it can undergo some full-blown testing and evaluation.

I'm sorry, I hope I'm not creeping anyone out... I suppose this is all a bit morbid.

Not at all. I was just afraid that a decision had been made without you being asked or consulted (and you found the result by accident).

I'm glad that's not the case.

Unfortunately, it does not seem like this is something I am going to be able to accomplish with the programmers who have done any of the work on the site, and if that's the case, it probably means re-writing the site from scratch, so there's an issue about who is going to do that.

I'd be prepared to chip in to help pay for a profeshunal code-monkey.

It's none of my business, but...

Not to worry, I was the one who brought it up.

Did you not know where they were (the ashes)?

No, obviously not.

(Did he not tell you she was cremated?)

Yes, my mom didn't specify how her remains were to be disposed of, so this was something my step-dad my bro and I had to decide on.

The way you describe it makes it sound like you didn't know they were there to begin with...

I didn't... I didn't know they were there yet. In retrospect I should have known, but it was not something I was considering at the time.

At some point I was drawn, in spite of how melodramatic that sounds, to a box on a bookshelf, and asked my step-dad what it was, and he told me it was my mom's ashes.

It's none of my business, but...

Sorry, don't mean to be nosy...

Ray, I feel for ya...Blue, you too, of course. Ray's story reminds me of my grandfather calling the local Social Security office to report my grandmother's death (and find out what he needed to provide them). I can't imagine how hard it must be to spend so much time with a person (think they were married 48 years), and then pick up the pieces after they're gone.

You two keep your chins up...

Ohh, and if anybody here is curious, Valium has absolutely NO affect on me any way, as I have taken 12 Valium pills over the last 10 hours. No help with the pain, no side affects of any kind, nothing...

Quboid: One area I'd like to see improved is the comment threads, but exactly what I'd like to see is something I'd have to think about. At present, they feel tacked on.

From my post earlier. Having the comments that you visited on the front page, so that you could see them as people added more comments would be usefull. having say your latest 5 threads maintaned there would be good i think!

again just my 2cents in how we should mutilate blues site
