UFO: Aftermath Patch

On the heels of today's playable UFO: Aftermath demo (story), the CENEGA Publishing Website also now offers a new version 1.2 patch for the UK/US version of the xenophobic strategy game. The 6 MB patch updates the game to version 1.2, and according to the read me, it addresses save game problems, some crashing bugs, localization issues, video problems, while also implementing some game play tweaks. Thanks Frans.

Thank you Paranoid, that was a refreshing post. And as you say, if people are to criticise a game, put some thought behind it, not just meaningless rant. And like you and Rajajuju I have many times found others opinion to be FAR from mine, not to mention reviews. Take Rune for instance. There is no better multiplayer game ever made in my opinion, but I sure don't share that with too many people ;).

Hey! I didnt listen to anyone either, and thats why I bought it. I usually dont listen unless there is a huge preponderance of bad reviews. I tend to like to see things for myself.

After playing through a good bit of it, I have come to discuss it with others. Take what you want from it. Since you have never played X-Com, you wont miss those aspects - but thats not to say that you are automatically going to love it either.

26. I am keeping an open mind... Oct 16, 2003, 21:25 Paranoid Jack

.. I went into Funcoland to get UFO:Aftermath or check on the release date since there were four different days listed depending on the site you visited.

Anyway they didn't have it and told me to come back Friday so I picked up Max Payne 2 as a spur of the moment purchase. I know the guy well enough that he said if I didn't like it bring it back (though they have a no-refund policy on PC games). After reading a few forums I decided not to even open it and I will just return it when I pick up UFO:Aftermath tomorrow.

I decided that not because there were so many negative posts but because some were actually well written. I never finished Max Payne because I got bored. And if Max Payne 2 is more of the same with a good story and better graphics why take a chance. I can always pick it up later when it hits the $30 range if I am bored.

As far as UFO:Aftermath I have read the negative but I have never played the original X-Com games. Even so this is not an X-Com game or a sequel. It's just a game similar in some ways to the old X-Com games. So I figure I will give it a shot and get my moneys worth before Silent Storm is released state-side.

I hardly ever listen to the negative comments because I have bought and enjoyed numerous games that were slammed on this site and others by overly negative picky people.

I remember not buying Fallout Tactics when it was released bacause everybody was crying that it wasn't Fallout 3. What did that do but lengthen the time it would take before any company even thought about taking on another Fallout title. I bought Fallout Tactics from a bargin bin and still have it on my hard drive two years later.

Slaughter has some good points and so do some others but just as many have no point... just negativity. If you don't like it go into detail and explain why. Don't just slam a game because you feel like raising hell and being abusive.

As far as Silent Storm goes... I played the demo numerous times and probably will again. I am seriosuly thinking about buying the UK version (which ships soon).

Its ok dude - but really... comparing this game to Silent Storm, I see ZERO redeeming factors in UFO. It is not what TBS fanatics are looking for... its some kind of bastardized hybrid TBS/RTS, and frankly I dont feel it is done very well. Ive played X-Com Apocalypse countless times, which ALSO has a RTS mode on top of the TBS one, and I liked it much better.

Also, after playing these games where you are used to having MUCH MORE movement options, and a much more intricate combat system altogether - it just seems... simplistic to me.

UFO:Aftermath should not be rewarded with more sales.

Well Slaughter there are those who get a copy and having nothing better to do; play it out to the end. You keep hoping the tech tree or something will actually make sense. Personally I put in over 40 hours playing the game to BOTH of its conclusions.
Luckily for me I can watch hours of anime on one system and play the game on another.

My conclusion-
No AI (aliens charge to optimal weapons range is not AI)
Squad members crouching is a joke and accomplishing basically nothing
Weapons are unbalanced.
Basic projectile weapons are better than the weapons your research against the Reticulans (patch 1.2 does not change this factor because of the alien shields)
Random scenarios start positions make for frustration and MANY restarts.
Tactics are only needed for less than 10% of missions

Gotta give props to the 3d programmer, everybody else should be ashamed of what they did to Xcom.

23. Sorry :( Oct 16, 2003, 19:38 Slaughter

Sorry about that people. I snapped a little ;). Hope you have no hard feelings Rajajuju. I'm just so sick and tired of people that come barging into some forum, screaming something like "This isn't an exact copy of X-Com, I HATE IT!".

Why can't people use some serious arguments. I don't mind it at all if people say "In this game you can't enter buildings, construct bases and go to different levels. These differences compared to X-Com made it a bad game for me". That is constructive criticism, and I'm fine with that. But when people use the first phrase I mentioned too often, that ticks me off.

As for X-Com games in relation to UFO:Aftermath, there are two kinds. The one that play it for 10 minutes and hate it. The ones that gives it a fair chance, playing it for 20-30 hours, and aren't all that happy with it (that I find rather strange since they played it for so long ;)). And there's the X-Com fans that likes or loves it.

Anyway, the first category rarely gave the game a chance. They played it for 10 minutes and that's it. This game isn't for everyone, by all means, but you should still keep an open mind and give it a chance. You may end up liking it.

Anyway, if I'm to shortly summarize what I liked and didn't like:
- No more base construction is a good thing IMO, though many do not agree. Now it is more important where you place your different bases, since you have so many. I currently have 30, and will have more at the end.
- VERY nice combat system. You have all the time to plan etc. from TB, and the realism from RT. I mostly like TB games like X-Com and Fallout, but this system is better IMO.
- Very cool new "lean around the corner" feature. Adds a lot when you do the capture base and city missions. Seeing your soldier lean around the corner, fire, and lean back is great!

Not so good:
- The new interception movies look very cool, but taking away the control over the fights is ridicules!
- Animations are good, but the graphics aren't all that good.
- No enter buildings isn't that big of an issue for many as we thought it would be, but it's still not a good thing.

These are only a few examples of good and bad sides. Anyway, if you are interested in reviews, we have a list here: http://www.ufoaftermath.co.uk/?c=Reviews&p=Reviews

And sorry again to Rajajuju and the rest of you for my rather unprovoked attack ;).

Its been in the works for years, and so far they only have the Geoscape to show for it. Dont get me wrong, Im ALL FOR IT! But I think fans might have a better chance using the Silent Storm editor. You can edit/swap ALL assets in the game, plus it even has a geoscape mode!! Its not in the main game at all, but the devs put one in anyway - and since they are giving us the editor too, its almost an invitation to do an X-Com mod. The bugaboos would be implementing research and base construction, but Id be willing to bet money the devs would lend all the advice you could ask for.

I just bought the X-Com collection for $4.99 the other day.

And I still play JA2 often. That, and the original X-COM, are two mostly flawless games.

As for the kid saying bashing this will hurt the genre, of course I know that. And I agree. But buying it will simply enforce the notion that you can release half-assed, boring, buggy games that mostly rip off an old idea and actually manage to have less features, instead of building upon it.

Is it too much to have a game where you feel sorry when someone dies because you invested a lot in it. Or to be angry when you lose a base because you needed it, tactically.

OR TO HAVE DAMN STAIRS IN A 3D GAME?

Go buy Silent Storm. Buy 20 copies if you want to help the genre. But reward companies for making GOOD GAMES, not games in genres you like!

Actually, I think most of us here are X-COM fans. Expecially me, I still got the X-COM: Terror from the Deep CD infront of me. (One of the best games ever made). I bought everything that was X-COM.

The sad thing is that UFO is just not a good game compared to X-COM:TftD. And that game is what, 7-8 years old?

IF they had just made a remake of it, I would have loved it.
But they took out too much, probobly to make it easier for kids.

11. Re: true dat Oct 16, 2003, 15:27 Beamer

Haha.

I thought the original Commandos would be fun. When I first played the demo I wasn't keen on the RTS (scrolling around the map to micromanage guys was too time consuming when someone was spotted), but loved how open-ended it felt. I noticed 3 different ways to solve the problems when I first played it.

The third or fourth time around I realized it wasn't really open-ended. Each problem had 3 or 4 solutions, each fairly obvious, and that was about it.

Still a decent time waster, but bargain-bin only.

Then I'm happy to report that the game is doing quite well Rajajuju!

You know what I think? I think you are a bunch of sad FOOLS! This game is not perfect, no denying that, but do you think you trying to ruin it's sales will help the genre? Instead of suggesting to the developers what should be changed in a expansion/sequel, as well as telling them
what was good, you rant like this!

It's people like you that make sure we get more or less NO good games in this genre. You don't understand anything, do you? You know why there are so few games in this genre? Because the publishers think they will not sell! They think it's wasted time making a game like this. And thanks
to brain-dead individuals like you, that may very well become the truth!

If you get your heads out of your behind for a little while, and try to see some of the good sides of Aftermath, instead of the only the bad ones, you may come to enjoy it. Cause even if it isn't perfect, it's a good game. Shooting around corners, how I love that! Adds a whole
new dimension to base/city combat!

Anyway, if you would just keep your mouths shut for two seconds, and maybe even think for a short while, you may understand maybe just 5% of what I just said. And then us fans of small, squad based games like Jagged Alliance and X-Com may possibly get a brighter future. Thank you in advance!
