TRIBES Vengeance Preview, Q&A

Gamespot Australia Previews TRIBES Vengeance (thanks Frans) with a look at the next installment in the online teamplay shooter series. In addition to a look at the game, the article also offers a Q&A with Michael Johnson and Alex "Marweas" Rodberg on the game, which includes a status report on how the project is progressing, saying "Tribes: Vengeance is about 65 percent complete, which means we're on target for a release in Q4 2004." Here's another bit, describing the game's new weapon:

The first new weapon we're announcing is tentatively called a rocket pod. It fires a cluster of spiralling rockets that constantly move in the direction you're aiming, which lets you control them while they're in the air. Tribes 2 had a missile launcher, but it was an auto-aim weapon that we didn't really like. The rocket pod is a replacement for that weapon. It's designed to be particularly effective against larger targets, such as vehicles, because you can potentially hit them with every rocket in the cluster. It can be used against players, too, but you might end up hitting them with only a few rockets.

Currently, the rocket pod is a bit tricky to use. We're exploring ways of making it fun while ensuring it remains a skill-based weapon. I should mention that, unlike Tribes 2, Tribes: Vengeance doesn't have flares to counter rockets. Your only defence is to be aware and dodge accordingly.

Update: This actually turns out to be a reprint of a story that originally appeared on GameSpot U.S., but there is a new TRIBES: Vengeance preview on Computer and Video Games for a dose of fresh content on the game.

That's true. It was a bit of a steep learning curve for new players who would just get slaughtered over and over again by the veterans. I wouldn't be surprised if quite a few people who were used to "2d" battle (such as Quake) were turned off by the more difficult 3rd dimension jet packs added. I kinda felt sorry for the newbies that got rocked constantly and then just left because they weren't having fun.

Exactly! I haven't played for some time, however the last time I did, only a few servers were online.

Most of them were private games.

Mind you, the community never helped itself either. Insted of welcoming new people, the attitude was always f*ck off nooob!

Had a lot of fun in the T1 haydays though...

I also hope it retains that play feeling of T2 Classic. It really sucks that T2 got the shaft because of the rocky start. That last major patch that was released by Garage Games optimized it immensely and smoothed lots of things out and now it plays like a dream. The thing is, there's hardly anyone playing it now. It's one of the most underrated multiplayer games ever, in my opinion. I stopped playing because of that, if more decent servers popped up that were regularly populated I'd start playing again in a second.

Id rather it play Like Tribes 2 classic. Not T1 base, Not T2 base, T2 classic.

I personally prefer T2 classic overall even T1 base which feels pretty klunky if you've ben playing T2 classic for awhile.

That was Vivendi's fault. They said "you have to downsize" -- what were they going to do, get rid of Valve? Hahaha

Yeah, Sierra sure did a good job with the Tribes franchise when it was made by Dynamix...put an incompetent boob in charge, rushed it out the door, then shut down the company to cover for their incompetence.

Sierra = Idiots
Vivendi = Bigger idiots
NBC = Even bigger idiots if they buy Sierra

The thing I loved about Tribes 1 was that they played the OTHER gameplay modes, like DnD for example, and they played the base more. Now look at Tribes 2, it's VERY hard to find a good base server, and IMPOSSIBLE to find a server playing a game like Siege. CTF gets so old

I agree. In the beginning I played T2 Siege a lot and I loved it. Just recently I reinstalled T2 after having not touched it in a year or so and was dismayed that there weren't any Siege servers running :{ At least not any populated ones.

Anyway, wtf did they do with the shocklance in T2? IIRC in the beginning you had to be standing right behind someone at very close range in order for it to work. But now I'm having people killing me with the damn thing from like 10 feet away. Unbelievable.

and onto what I think about the gameplay:

I personally liked T2 better because it put more of an emphasis on team play than T1 did. To me, T1 was a lot easier to cowboy. You couldn't do that in T2. To some that was bad, to some it was good. I enjoyed it. I DID think it could have been faster, though (I liked base++)

Does anyone get the nagging feeling that this thing might get cancelled before 'Q4 2004'? It just feels like it's skating on thin ice... *shrugs*

Absolutely not. Unless Vivendi sells its game unit and Sierra goes belly up, I can guarantee it will not be canned before then. There is too big a following of the Tribes franchise for this to happen.

it's being made by irrational games, makers of 2 of my top 5 games of all time (system shock 2 & freedom force). i have no worries about this title. the original gameplay model rocks so they should have no problem improving it.

Man, if they make it like Tribes 1 that will basically be a step in reverse. The original Tribes was basically deathmatch and capture the flag with jetpacks, no teamwork required at all.

Im hoping for a more T2 type gameplay (minus the flaws.)

well, I DO want it to play like Tribes 1. The problem with someone asking for new new new this that and the other thing, the only thing remaining that is Tribes at all after that... is the name. And just cause ya smack the letters T R I B E S on the box, that don`t make it Tribes.

The Tribes feel is inherent in its gameplay elements. Tribes 2 has been said by many to not feel right, tho loads still loved it warts and all. My vote is for the game to have that Tribes 1 feel back, with the upgraded visuals/styling look, new weaps/vehicles etc.
It has to be Tribes in more than just name.

Take Black Hawk Down for example. They slapped a DF on the box, but BHD doesn`t even come close to having the FEEL of say, DF 1 or DF 2. All the stuff that made DF what is WAS, was ripped outta the game, all cause some whinny little fux cried their asses off that they couldn`t learn to use the ACOG mounted M16s effectively or fast enough, and that they had to freaking far to run to the objectives. So new new new got us what? The skillbased weaps turned into nerf quaker weaps, small CQB maps to what? Quake in. And Fogbanks to impar long distance visibilities.

If a thing ain`t broke, don`t fix it.

Cancelled? No way. They can only do better this time.
NBC is buying Vivendi, which owns Sierra, so the money will be there to keep it going.
They fixed T2, and believe it or not, it's fun, and I play every night.
The devs are including the community, and there will be a beta. If they're 65% done right now, that means they can start beta testing early next year, so that changes can be made before Q4. They've already let the admin of Tribalwar play, and put the video on the web site. I think the devs realize that last 10% of the game will take the longest to finish.

I just hope it can have more than 32 players, because I like 60 player servers like HV.

I definitely don't want it to be like Tribes 1. I want fresh, new gameplay. If I want to play Tribes 1, I can just install it. There are still lots of people playing that game. I want a fresh experience... new weps, new vehicles, new game modes, better animation, more voice commands, better maps. Tribes 1 had about 2 really good maps... the rest were unbalanced. T:V should retain the basic concept of both T1 and T2, but make it so that a solo player can still have fun.

Tribes 2 was a great game. The only problems was that they tried to make it more like team warfare, but didn't anticipate the fact that lots of idiots play online games so it's incredibly difficult and frustrating to rely on your team members.
