Halo Status Report

With the removal of the remaining work items list on the Halo Website, Gearbox's Randy Pitchford made a forum post called Halo PC Status describing the imminence of announcements concerning the game's availability (thanks Frans and HBO). Here's the deal:

Expect an announcement about the release date of Halo PC sometime in the next 1 to 4 days.

gearboxsoftware.com will carry the announcement in the forums, on the main pages and will offer other fun materials related to the announcement.

The "Work Items" remaining ticker was removed because there are no remaining work items for the retail game.

The team is working on a number of other things including a demo and some bonus features to be released as an update on or about launch time.

We are having lots of fun at Gearbox playing "Assault" mode in Halo PC. We can't wait for you to be able to join us

Thanks for your participation in the forums and thank you for your continued excitement and anticipation of Halo's invasion of the PC.

Yup, that was the one. It had some cool terminals, but the 'build your own staircase' puzzle was absolutely infuriating - and I know Bungie have apologised for it on many occasions

Is that the one where you had to adjust the heights of the different ledges using the control room that over looked the room, but was a 50 mile walk away?

I haven't played the library level, but I doubt it could be more frustrating than Bungie's level called 'Colony Ship for Sale, Cheap' from Marathon 1.

While I think most of it was fun, just wait until you get to the Library level; it's a repetitive spiral staircase that lasts WAY too long. And then, you have to do it all over again.

I don't know what possessed them to do that. It practically ruined the last half of the game for me. But all-in-all, it was a fun game.

One of the Bungies' guys admitted in an interview some time ago (dont ask when, I dont remember) That they were under an extremely tight deadline and they didn't have much choice but to pad the latter portions of the game with corridor clearing. IMO though, the final 10 minutes made up for the slight repetition. It was probably one of the most memorable moments I've had since I started gaming.

'Yes, the impression I get of Halo from many people who have played it is that, although it isn't anything particularly revolutionary, it is one of those rare games where everything just clicks and it all adds together to be something far greater than the sum of its parts.'

Amen to that. Polished. The game feels so polished. I hardly ever replay games and bar one or two levels of halo i'd kick it off again right now. In a sea of games that leave you thinking that they were close to getting it perfect but didn't, that it the game issues that detract or smells of lazyness in game design, they just got it 'right'.

I don't have an x box and and have given most of it's other titles a big miss. To me the consoles a giant doorstop. Halo saved an otherwise 'so what?' console from being a disaster so it deserves credit where it's due.

Nefilim, you said you didn't mean to sound like an ass. I believed you the first time, but what about your latest 'it sucks' post? Because now it sounds like you're trying.

For those of you buying Halo, late-September to October is gonna be a gaming orgy!!!

I can't recall any time in recent memory that had this many anticipated titles released in such a limited timeframe. Last year was close though with NOLF2, Hitman2, and Mafia.

And yes I have played bits and pieces of Halo on the X-Box. There's absolutely nothing revolutionary in it, but the intrinsic visceral feel of combat is so refined in Halo that you couldn't care less.

"It really doesnt make sence for Halo not to run well on a top of the line Nvidia card since Halo on Xbox (which is a Gforce 3.5) ran just fine"

First off, the XBox only had to run the game in 640x480. And even then, I learned a few ways to make the game run really slow in certain parts.

Second, the XBox is a single platform that only has to do one thing: play games. It doesn't have to worry about too many background processes or discrenpencies between different XBoxes. The PC version has to run across the different OS's, and handle the different hardware configurations out there. This increases bloat and decreases performance.

Lastly, it wasn't simply a GF3-series card. Reading some of the FAQs and what-not, the development team said they had to COMPLETELY re-write the animation code, as that was code-specific to the XBox. I'm sure there were other parts where the code wasn't standard DX9 code, but specialized code.

I too am bitter about Bungie selling out, being a long term Bungie fan myself (since Marathon). But a good game is a good game, and by all reports Halo is a good game.

I didnt mean to sound like an ass... I'll admit, I'm still bitter about Bungie selling out to Microsoft. Something about porting a PC game to a console, and then porting it BACK to the PC, after 2 years... just seems ridiculous to me.

A lot of people like smaller games, but when I imagined playing Halo years ago.. I imagined LARGE games with plenty of vehicles, etc.. not 10 player deathmatch on small boxy levels. Halo will leave a lot to be desired imo, thank god many other awesome games are on the horizon.

That's cool, man. I agree the 16 player limit sucks. Although, back in the day I used to have a helluva time on Quake2 servers with 8 player limits. Believe it or not, I have some respect for your opinions because of your tribes2 maps. Anyway, thanks for expanding on your thoughts, it kinda bugs me when people criticize something with one word and no explanation but I am guilty of it too from time to time.

And I dont wanna hear this "you cant judge the beta as a final product" BS. I'm 100% sure nothing drastic is going to change between now and then that would make the game any better. 16 player max multiplayer and no co-op is NOT going to change, and thats the main reason I t5hink Halo sucks.

Yes, I've played the beta.

It sucks. If you like repetitious, maze like levels... maybe you will enjoy it. I didn't. Multiplayer might be entertaining for a short while, but with a 16 player limit... It's just not that fun imo. Again, maybe you will like it... but I didn't.

Halo sucks

So you have played it, Nefilim? Give us more of your opinion... why does it suck, man? Just saying it "sucks" doesn't really convince me.
