NVIDIA & Half-Life 2

Following up on some comments from Gabe Newell and the Half-Life 2 benchmarks presented at yesterday's ATI festivities (story), NVIDIA has issued a statement in response, which has been posted on 3DGPU and Gamers Depot. The statement questions the use of older drivers for benchmark comparisons, offers their understanding that there is only one Half-Life 2 bug remaining in their newest (as yet unreleased) drivers, and concludes like this:

The optimal code path for ATI and NVIDIA GPUs is different - so trying to test them with the same code path will always disadvantage one or the other. The default settings for each game have been chosen by both the developers and NVIDIA in order to produce the best results for our consumers.

In addition to the developer efforts, our driver team has developed a next-generation automatic shader optimizer that vastly improves GeForce FX pixel shader performance across the board. The fruits of these efforts will be seen in our Rel.50 driver release. Many other improvements have also been included in Rel.50, and these were all created either in response to, or in anticipation of the first wave of shipping DirectX 9 titles, such as Half Life 2.

We are committed to working with Gabe to fully understand his concerns and with Valve to ensure that 100+ million NVIDIA consumers get the best possible experience with Half Life 2 on NVIDIA hardware.

Sorry man, I'll need to see something to back this up. While it IS Irish government policy to offer tax breaks and incentives for foreign companies to set up facilities in Ireland through the Industrial Development Authority, (and a lot have set up their european headquarters there including Dell, Microsoft, Intel and most recently Ebay) I have never heard anything about the government actually purchasing a company. In fact, I'm pretty sure there are competition laws against it.

Also I don't what you mean by "They have no jobs". You obviously haven't read the news in the last 5 years. While there's been a light downturn in recent years, Ireland still has one of the lowest unemployment rates and a GDP of ~ 4%. In 2000, it had a GDP of 10%. By contrast, germany has a GDP of -.5% at the moment.

"I keep hearing how we try to help other countries"

not sure where you are hearing that from but I just read in a newspaper that the USA has one of the lowest percentage of helping out other countries in the world, with less than 0.01% of their income going to help other countries.

They also spend 200million on military which is more than china, south korea, germany, france, UK, russia and india COMBINED.

Since the money obviously isnt going to help other countries, perhaps unemployed americans should consider joining the military, there doesnt seem to be any shortage of funds there

I know this sounds confusing, and is the opposite strategy of America, but some governments try to provide for their people.

Tell me about it. I keep hearing how we try to help other countries and blah blah blah. But, when the hell is the US gov gonna realize that we're going down the cr@pper.

The unemployment rate is through the roof. People that graduated with me over a year ago are STILL looking for work. They're letting more and more companies outsource to India, which is good for them, but puts a lot of our people out of work.

I think its about time the US started a "Hoover Damn" project for the tech market. They should set up a large company or organization (that is needed, not something useless) and start hiring programmers/engineers/etc. That would help out a LOT.

uh Chaos engine... The Irish government bought Creative 2 years ago, and has run it into the ground. They have no jobs, and do buy tech. companies to make jobs for their people. I know this sounds confusing, and is the opposite strategy of America, but some governments try to provide for their people.

If we don't see news about Half-Life 2 going gold in the next couple of days, how will they be able to print a bazillion copies & send it across the skies, seas, & land to the retail stores near us in time for their September 30th release?

Don't say steam. Steam hasn't worked for me since they released that horrific piece of nonsense.

wow.... that just may be THE stupidest thing I have ever read. I doubt the Irish govt has anywhere near enough spare cash to purchase nvidia, and it doesn't as a rule purchase private companies from other countries.

ROFL at the muppet who posted that....

Much of what seems to be coming from NVIDIA's door step is more talk and less action. I remember when they took over the market and ran down 3DFX. Remember this type of "on their heals / backpedaling" that they were doing? Now the same thing seems to be happening with them.

All I have to say is if NVIDIA wants to win me back.. lets see some product. I don't want to see / hear about delayed technology and excuses...

If they suddenly announced it had gone gold and was available on steam i think steam would ground to a halt with all the people downloading 1.2gb each off it (i assume 2 cds worth).

I would imagine the entire internet will grind to a halt if HL2 is up online. Once Steam has it, someone will post it to the warez channels (even though they're steam files) and set about cracking it...

Thought for the day: Remember the quake "shareware" cd and how quickly it was cracked? Any bets for how long it will take to crack Steam files to allow offline play?

It was them that originally said the date was 17th and the street date was 30th so people didnt "make it up".

Also I think youll find that invariably these companies WILL announce when a game has gone gold because it generates extra publicity and anticipation for when it arrives in the shops.

If they suddenly announced it had gone gold and was available on steam i think steam would ground to a halt with all the people downloading 1.2gb each off it (i assume 2 cds worth).

wasnt HL2 due to go gold today? id have thought some sort of news on the subject would be out before now whether it is or isnt.

Sure, they had a gold date on going gold. Now that makes sense. People makes stuff up and Valve doesn't have to tell anyone that the game is gold. For all they care, the game could be 'gold' on September 29th and only be available via steam untill CD are pressed/shipped two weeks later. That ould mean more money for them. CONSPIRACY THEORY of the day.

have you noticed how not one logitech product has improved in five years?

This is because the Trackman Marble is the epitome of design...

my initial comment was not meant to be racist, the potato thing wasnt me. It is an observation; after the Irish government bought/nationalized creative, all of their products have gone downhill. Logitech was bought by the German gov't and similarily nationalized... have you noticed how not one logitech product has improved in five years? nVidia, if I am not mistaken was bought by the irish government. I don't mean to make any comment on irish people, just that their government sucks ass at developing hardware

"It is that simple. What is it with Irish gov't ruining perfectly good hardware companies (creative, now nvidia)? This is starting to stink like logitech"

Maybe because they think its ok to pay their employees with potatos. Then shoot them in the kneecaps when they complain.

Wow, you hit the nail right on the head. All Irish people are like that.

No, hang on, you're a racist idiot and you're wrong. Yeah, that's the one.

Nvidia AND ATI might need to watch out.
Take a look at www.xgitech.com.
Major looking hardware specs, but I'll need to see some deeper tech info to be convinced some guys coming out of nowhere can really deliver the goods.

luckily (at least I hope this is true) there are still servers out there that keep a keen eye on cheaters.

Hopefully the post I'm commenting on will be deleted.
Enough online games have been rruined by cheaters to give this guy any more attention.
