Out of the Blue

Working on this update pushed it past midnight... I was going to sneak it in as part of Friday's news, but hey, here we are on Saturday, so why not just go with it?

I think I've tracked down a problem that has been making me crazy(er) lately, as cutting and pasting things on my Win2K machine would sometimes fail to work, and even worse, would occasionally crash whatever app I was pasting into. I peaked in my temp directory and found a pair of files there, and deleting them seemed to clear up the problem completely and immediately. I have no idea how that worked, but boy am I glad it did.

Play Time: Stupid MS PaperClip Game. Thanks Ant.

Thanks Mike Martinez.

Strunk and White have the following to say about prepositions...

preposition ending a sentence. It was John Dryden, the 17th-century poet and dramatist, who first promulgated the doctrine that a preposition may not be used at the end a sentence. Grammarians in the 18th century refined the doctrine, and the rule has since become one of the most venerated maxims of schoolroom grammar. But sentences ending with prepositions can be found in the works of most of the great writers since the Renaissance. In fact, English syntax not only allows but sometimes even requires final placement of the preposition, as in We have much to be thankful for or That depends on what you believe in. Efforts to rewrite such sentences to place the preposition elsewhere can have comical results, as Winston Churchill demonstrated when he objected to the doctrine by saying ďThis is the sort of English up with which I cannot put.Ē

Even sticklers for the traditional rule can have no grounds for criticizing sentences such as I donít know where she will end up or Itís the most curious book Iíve ever run across; in these examples, up and across are adverbs, not prepositions. You can be sure of this because it is impossible to transform these examples into sentences with prepositional phrases. It is simply not grammatical English to say I donít know up where she will end and Itís the most curious book across which I have ever run.

It reminds me of the old joke....

A gentleman wanders around the campus of a college looking for the library. He approaches a student and asked, "Excuse me, young man. Would you be good enough and tell me where the library is at?"
The student, in a very arrogant and belittling tone, replied, "I sorry, sir, but at this school, we are taught never to end a sentence with a preposition!"
The gentleman smiled, and in a very apologetic tone replied, "I beg your pardon. Please allow me to rephrase my question. Would you be good enough to tell me where the library is at, asshole?"

"And then, suddenly and without warning, it turned into a real-life case of hungry, hungry hippos."
