Ultima X: Odyssey Announced

Origin Systems Announces Development of Ultima X Odyssey is the press release officially announcing development of another MMO Ultima game. There was also a press event yesterday to unveil the project, and HomeLAN Fed's Ultima X Odyssey Press Event Report is a teaser article, pointing out that the assembled scribes will be exposed to the game first hand today (so expect one of those flurries of previews that typically follows such an event). Meanwhile, a 21 MB gameplay trailer has also been released, and can be found for download on FilePlanet (registration required), Gamer's Hell, IGN, Tiscali Games (where there's also a smaller DivX version), and Worthplaying, while the first screenshots from the project have been posted on GameSpyDaily. Here's a bit from the press release:

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 22, 2003--Origin Systems, an Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:ERTS - News) development studio, today announced the development of Ultima X: Odyssey(TM) (UXO), a next generation massively multi-player online role-playing game (MMORPG) from the award-winning Origin studio team. Powered by the latest version of the UnrealŪ Engine and based on the renowned Ultima(TM) single-player role-playing series, UXO will enable players to create personalized legacies in a massive new online world and will be one of the first of its kind to offer private areas on demand within the game.

"Ultima X: Odyssey takes the genre to the next level through its innovative new Odyssey Adventure System ensuring that players experience a greater sense of adventure and reward from both questing and combat," said Andy Hollis, vice president and chief operating officer of Origin Systems.

UXO's proprietary and innovative Odyssey Adventure System delivers customized quests to players automatically and enables private adventure zones, providing adventures on demand as players journey through the world. An added bonus in offering players private areas is that they can't be interrupted by "griefers" and other uninvited guests.

28. EA Aug 22, 2003, 12:55 Halsy

In the words of Billy Wilson, 'Well slap my ass and call me Sally', I didn't think EA was ever going to spring for a new UO. Those cheap basatrds have milked this one long enough.
I don't think anything will top Mythica or Wow.

Games like UO don't need Private areas because there really isn't any camping, i.e. Someone waiting for Dragon x to drop item y, you want that drop you kill the camping player, simple. Carebear games like EQ you have to either have an unlimited amount of time to just sit at a spawn point and wait for your turn because if you try to cut a GM WILL punish you. If I wanted to sit around and wait for 12 hours doing nothing then I'd get in my car and drive into some traffic. You like to sit around doing nothing and pay for it? LoL. So I guess it really comes down to how they allow PvP to happen overall. Seems to me (my guess) the 'general' areas will be Non-PvP with consensual PvP private areas for those that want that. I don't have enough time to play a carebear based game w/o private areas if I actually want to get 'good' items. I don't know anything for a fact but I'd bet there will also be common dungeons for those who like to wait in line to swing their sword :). It's called options, options are nice, options make 'more' people happier. We'll have to see I guess, one can either pay to wait or pay to play.. I'd rather have an option.

I agree with small garlic

They cancel UO2, which loookd to be way ahead of its time, then a few years later decide to start development again on almost the same thing? WTF?

The gaming public got robbed of a great game, and the Origins team got fired, effectively getting rid of the last opf the original crew. Not that I've ever played the Ultima games, but these people obviously knew what they were doing, and they got fired for it...

...surprised if that is what Ultima fans are looking for. It looks a bit dated, too; certainly improved over the current game, but still behind current-day titles.

Is the reason for private dungeons is like that in Anarachy Online, That way if your group of 20 wants to hunt a high level boss, your night fighting with every other guild in the game, or other people in the zones causing trains and problems. Plus it would cut down on lag and frame rate issues as well.

It's too bad EA killed Ultima with U9. All they're doing is riding a name - the real developers left a long time ago. Next please.

Well this looks like every mmorpg out there. A chat box, 3d view, Combat moves F1-F8, a "bag" that looks more like marble with a grid, fog 10 feet away, private areas.
I really don't think I will like these Private dungeons. They seem to destroy the entire purpose of mmorpgs's.. You know.. Playing with other people. If I wanted to play with 8 other people, I would install diablo2,nwn, dungeon siege, etc. And best of all.. It would be free.
I hope they will actually try to balance this game. Peacemaking is almost required in UO if you want to fight the harder monsters. The screenshots do look nice,,, except for the view distance..

They're not crappy, but nothing spectacular either.
Take a look at any Dragon Empire screenshot and then tell me this looks better. Not by a longshot.

And the idea of fighting round shaped thingy with their brain exposed (wich by any logic would mean you should be able to kill them with ONE hit) or low-poly gargoyle doesn't appeal me.

And for those that tells me that your happy hero as some shinny reflection on his armor, I'd expect fire to have a reflection on it in the video (and the fire does look like crap).

But seriously, I think back to playing Dragon Warrior on the NES, the first few Wizardry's, or Might & Magic 1 and am just floored at how people can look at these shots and called them ho-hum. I would've had a giggle attack as a ten-year-old back then being able to run around realistic looking forests like in the shots.

I'll agree, I don't think those shots look all that good, either.

Blocky character models, no detail in the trees, etc.

Morrowind still looks way better. Also, what is the point in playing a mmorpg with "private" quest areas? If you want private, why not play a single player game? Then you can go online, play it with friends, and NOT pay a monthly fee for doing so, and guess what? It'll be private!

Morgan19,

I think they just need to upgrade their monochrome monitors and coke-bottle eyeglasses then, maybe, just maybe, the screenshots will look appealing.

I shake my head in disbelief at the people calling those screenies "unappealing" or "crappy." How jaded are you people?

Without Richard Garriot and the Origin team, I'm very worried it just won't feel like an Ultima game.

We'll see,

Screenshots look fine, though not riveting. This could be good, one to watch at least.

Bah, a MMO Ultima should be called Ultima X. How I long for another single-player Ultima.

"So let me get the timeline right.

Origin spends ~1-2 years developing UO2
EA cancels UO2 out of no where saying that it would be too much competition with UO
Origin announces a NEW Ultima-based MMP, which (from everything I have seen) looks like it could be a direct competition for UO.

Makes perfect sense to me."

I thought I had read that UO2 was a glorified tech demo and it was cancelled because it wasn't going anywhere. Besides, this looks pretty different than UO2, more interesting IMO. Although not much informations have been released... I thought the environments in UO2 looked like shit.

"Those screenshots don't look particularly appealing..."

What kind of shit are you smoking? You should change your pusher...

I think they look great...

But graphics aside, can they even beat the total mess that Ultima IX was? I'm not sure I ever want to buy an Origin product again after that complete piece of shit.
