Actually I do get it. What I meant is that there are other networks out there. There are also other means of raising money. UGO isn't the be all end all of web advertising.

You dont get it do you.
Beeing part of a network like UGO means the advertisement deals they get, are shared with Blue.
If UGO cant get good enough ads do you think a person alone would achieve that?
So basically Blues income comes from the advertisements. Problem is, its not enough.
For us, with ads or no ads, its still free.

I have no problems with Blue trying to make a buck, but it will be without me. I could go into the many reasons why, but I don't care to get flamed into next week. I'll check back once and awhile.
Many people say that bandwidth is expensive, but it's not that bad. If you can afford to spend $100 per month you can get yourself a server with 700-900 GB of bandwidth per month. www.rackspace.com www.rackshack.net to name few.
Maybe cutting ties with UGO might lead to something.
Blue, I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully I'll be back soon.

Exactly, thats an understatement.
What i really wanted by asking that question, Blue, was to make sure ppl realize what they're discussing in the first place, so they can later decide correctly wether to donate/contribute or not.
I assume that modifying the site to have two different versions for members and guests requires not only technical knowledge that you may not have but also (in case you hire a programmer) an investment risk, if the subscription model bombs.
My decision goes toward the donations because its the quick-no-hassle solution. Sure, its not perfect and its not going to work forever.
But for now, it may help you out. And besides, im sure that people willing to contribute thru a subscription model would also accept to pay thru Paypal if thats El President's choice.
PS - Dont forget the Amazon wishlist.

Who cares...
I don't really know why anyone would even pay to advertise in those Ad's - I have NEVER clicked on an Ad...and NEVER will....Ad's are annoying...but just deal with it.
Would I pay to see Blues News? No.

Also, i would like to see clarified the bandwidth issue. Isnt Blues News part of the UGO Network thus using their own bandwidth? That is correct
If that is true, Blue gets his bandwidth for free, right? Not really... it is part of the deal with UGO to provide hosting, and is considered part of their compensation for running the ads.
As the old expression goes, there's no such thing as a free lunch. |

This is my feeling, exactly.
Also, i would like to see clarified the bandwidth issue. Isnt Blues News part of the UGO Network thus using their own bandwidth?
If that is true, Blue gets his bandwidth for free, right?
Now, besides that, i still think we should support Blue's work. So, we have some solutions:
1) more intrusive ads 2) subscription model with ad-free navigation for members that pay 3) paypal donations and less ads (just keep the basic banners)
I wont dwelve into those 3 possibilities because that has been done many times before.
I'll simply state that i would prefer #3 "donations and just basic banners".
Everyone seems willing to donate to make the take-over advertisement disappear but lets not forget that making such oferts thru a practically anonymous board is worthless. Im sure Blue himself has weighted that many times, he knows that once he puts the Paypal thingy, "theres no way back".

I'm starting to get why so many computer geeks are also fat, out-of-shape slobs. It all boils down to an extra single-click over the course of the day and people are complaining?!?! Think of this as an opportunity to burn some extra calories without even having to get your fat, lazy asses out of your chair.

Any chance we could get ads for say, NewEgg or Directron or something better than the movie or game ads? If a click puts some $$$ in the bank I'd gladly click on 'em instead of going through my Favorites. Indeed - at least have an "affiliates" page and sign up for all the affiliates programs; Amazon, Barnes&Noble, Chapters, whatever sites out there do it. Call it "Blues Bargain Bin", make it a link off the sidebar (perhaps after the Mail Bag *cough*), and when I'm buying something online, I can hit and go through that instead.
No pseudo-guilt for Blue getting straight donations; he can use his credits or whatever towards a blender or dog food or something (new pc crap, perhaps).
