Oh, and I find it ironic that ABC News has a link on their web page called :
Electricity Out Where You Are? What to Do If I wasn't so busy at work right now, I'd find an phone number on that page, tell them my power is out, and ask them to read the article to me over the phone.

the thing that sucked the worst is that there was no water here as well because the pumps that pump it out of lake erie were shut down. Get ready to boil your water.

i live outside of cleveland and our power just came back on within and hour or two... the thing that sucked the worst is that there was no water here as well because the pumps that pump it out of lake erie were shut down. it made for one long, hot, humid, and boring evening. at least it's over. i read that some people in michigan will have to go the weekend without power...
btw, fredrickson, i've always enjoyed your posts (well, some of them) but your request for "Live vooverage" of the blackout is now my all-time favorite. sounds like a sign you'd see on a strip club: "Live Vooverage! Every Friday at Midnight!!"

heh.. fredrickson sounds like one of those guys that lives in the mountains of Montana; unabomber style.. he also makes a good point.
something like losing power in a major metropolitan area shows just how dependant we are on technology to run out lives. Once food started to spoil, water stations wouldnt pump fresh water for drinking (no toilets either!!), looting, mutant gangs roaming the streets, cannibalism etc..

Found her... she's spending the night in the city at her sister's. That's good to know Blue, I'm glad she's safe and sound.
My brother lives in Altona(sp?) NY, near Plattsburg, haven't heard from him yet.

but I am yet to locate MrsBlue, much less formulate a plan to get her home. That sounds really annoying, and somewhat scarry! Good luck on a speedy return!
This is why it is always good to have a cheap cellphone, and cheap service. I have a cellphone, and only 2 people know the number, for emergency.
I think about them just like with ICQ/AIM/etc If you do not know where I am, I do not want to talk to you most likely!

Forget blues power to his house! His wife takes a train to and from work every day. She is prob gonna be stuck, and he is prob gonna have to drive way off to pick her up, which with all the traffic is gonna take forever! poor blue You are quite right about that... power just came back here in the Blue Tower, but I am yet to locate MrsBlue, much less formulate a plan to get her home. |

just had a funny thought. What if this huge blackout all turns out to be caused by that worm that has reeked havoc on windows machines all over. Someone just did not update a simple PC connected to the grid somewhere, and somehow the worm really screwed stuff up! (yes this does not seem technically likely) But sure as hell would be funny! You're not the only one who has had that spooky thought....
Heard a report someone said a lightning hit the Niagara power station. I looked on the doppler and there was some very minor activity (looked like just a brief shower) in the area around 18:00, but not at 16:14 at the time it went out.

Wow' This is big. I'm in Providence RI and not affected. And Blue seems to be still up (or recently restored?). One thing I'm wondering- did this affect rural areas as well, or just metro areas- they're only saying cities on the news.
I remember seeing about the great northeast blackout of 65 on the History Channel. Never thought it could happen this big these days- goes to show how vulnerable the grid is.
One thing-- if by any chance anyone with a good view of Manhattan is reading this- get a photo of the moonrise over Manhattan tonight- that will be one for the history books! Moon is up at just after 9pm or so EST.
