Half-Life 2 Benchmark?

PC Games has indications, in German, that Valve plans on releasing a benchmark based on the Source engine sometime prior to the release of Half-Life 2. Here's a link to the Babel Fish translation, which will allow non-German speakers to see the quote from Gary McTaggart on the subject. Thanks Maximus, who points the way to this comparison on Valves' VERC from their fledgling Half-Life 2/Source Mod FAQ comparing maximum map size in Half-Life 2 to the original Half-Life.

Just for fun, here's the quote translated from english to german and back to english, one more time: Suitable rumors were confirmed now by a statement by Gary McTaggart, developer with valve. In an interview he said: "definitely a bank HL2 markbefore release of the play comes." An expiration date of the point of outline was not designated however.

Hm? The PC Games article was posted 4 days ago -- okay, not exactly new in the Internet time scale, but still not months old... Or was this made public somewhere else at an earlier date? Whats up with valve and germany...

Outside of the US, Germany is the biggest PC market = massive importance to publisher.

On a sliding scale, top 4 countries for the PC market are roughly (largest at top):

A story involving both Halflife 2 and benchmarking, all of it wrapped in a foreign language. But not a single comment from the conspiracy theorists on either Halflife2 or the graphics chips makers can manipulate these benchmarks as well. Something must have gone terribly wrong with the world.
