Half-Life 2 Undelayed

After many sketchy confirmations and denials of the report that Half-Life 2 has been delayed from its planned September 30 release date (story), BeyondHalflife.com has a report up quoting Amy Farris, PR director at Vivendi Universal as saying "Valve is still working toward the Sept. 30 ship date." This reassurance still seems to leave a shadow of a doubt about this ("working toward") but a further report on HomeLAN Fed quotes the same Ms. Farris as calling reports that the game was delayed "a miscommunication."

49. Re: September 30th via Steam only.... Sep 10, 2003, 18:24 nin

Thoughts?

That's actually a pretty sharp idea...they could use the remaining weeks to patch those that got it through Steam, while still going for a more complete retail version.

And let's be honest: Anyone who's using Steam would love to play HL2 early, even if it's not gold.

Good theory on your part (and welcome to the board)!

48. September 30th via Steam only.... Sep 10, 2003, 15:29 Xenoc1de

Here's a thought. Maybe the 9/30 release is only via steam with retail release to follow in a month or so. That would explain

1. why they are launching the full version of steam tonight (give it a few weeks to tweak before HL2)

2. Why retailers have October and November release dates.

With an initial release through Steam, Valve actually has about 3 extra weeks to fine tune the game (or else they would need to be "going gold" right about now)

Thoughts?

I just saw on Amazon.com that the date was Oct 30 and a friend had told me that someone he knows at E/B said it was coming out late Nov.

This weekend, UK online retailers amazon.co.uk and play.com have changed Half-Life 2 release dates from 28 November back to 30 September; they had switched to later date some weeks ago.

Do they know something?

"Valve is still working toward the Sept. 30 ship date."

Start chucking dude. lol It WILL be delayed. The above statement is clearly to release the definate gamer disappointment pressure for a bit. When the 30th rolls around, they will release more statements saying they are doing this or that, found this or that bug... then easily swayed gamers are gonna start spoutng pure shit like "do ya want a bug filled game, or a finished 1".

One would hope that a Dev who started so long ago, would have their shit together more and just release on time. Without the is it delayed or not delayed bs. Valve did gamers a real boon by not announcing HL 2s developement till just this year, but this crap after the fact has made that point moot. 2003 is Officially dubbed as the Year of The Delay IMHO.

I work at gamestop, and for the last month or so I have been checking the HL2 release date and it has always been september 30th. Well, yesterday [thursday the 7th] when I checked it, it said 02/02/04. This was YESTERDAY! So I hope to go when I go into work tomorrow it says September 30th or I may be throwing my computer out the window.

As much as I love FPS gaming, it has become stagnant, repetitive, and boring.

You mean it's become CounterStrike.

Just for the record, the whole September thing came from this review, on page 2: http://www.shacknews.com/extras/e_halflife_2/

The relevant quote is:

Then I spot a date on the build that is being shown that really surprises me so I ask the question, “This build is from September of last year?” and the answer.. “Yes”. Yup that’s right, instead of the developers crunching to get stuff done to show the press just hours before arriving, we’re looking and code that is nearly 8 months old. If I’m looking at stuff that they had done 8 months ago, its really going to be fun to see what the most recent stuff looks like that will be shown at E3 this year in just another week.

BUT... The quote is concerning a presentation of the game shown to certain gaming magazines/sites before E3, not the demo shown at E3 or the videos we're seeing presently. So, while the E3 presentation may also have been based on a Sept. 2002 build (assuming it was a different presentation that the reviewer making this quote saw), this isn't saying that.

Thank you, God.

I would just like to say, that the last couple years of FPS gaming have sucked ass. Seems like we have been in a black hole of Quake3 and Unreal engine games that just turn my stomach. I hope this fall/winter changes this for a while. Otherwise I might just give up. It sucks sitting around waiting YEARS for innovation in this interest/hobby. As much as I love FPS gaming, it has become stagnant, repetitive, and boring.

Thrasher, they said the build of the game was from September but that doesn't mean they put the presentation together then. They could have used that build sometime in March/April to make it

I found the original report of the delay to be somewhat sketchy at best since they didn't site their source. However, delays and dates don't mean a thing to me until I see the installation routine complete on my PC.

Yeah, really, what the fuk to PR people know, really! I used to work door-to-door for a phone company...I didn't know shit...when u ring your isp or a computer shop u get a PR person...and they don't know shit... u need a tech to tell u what's what...same deal i reckon with game publishing...a PR rep should know better than to answer such an important question at all, all they are paid to do is say "BUY out game OUR game is great"...that's it, when it comes to code issues, never trust PR...when it comes o M-O-N-E-Y...then, maybe

"I wish you folks would get your stories correct before saying a damned thing. The demos being shown at E3 were not up-to-date demos, they were made I believe in September 2002. "

This is the biggest and most relayed myth there is. Totally untrue.
