More on Half-Life 2 Graphics

A chat log from last night's chat with NVIDIA is up on Bjorn3D. Along the way, the proceedings point the way to a forum post called Half-Life 2 - Anti-aliasing by Valve's Gabe Newell that puts the recently unveiled "problem" with HL2 antialiasing (story) in perspective: He explains how the visual artifacts described in recent reports have been present in other games for years, and that they are showing concern because they have eliminated so many other visual artifacts as well as the amount of light variation they are using. He goes on to discuss solutions:

2) What are potential solutions?

  • Support Centroid Sampling
  • Use Pixel Shaders to Clamp Texture Coordinates

Centroid sampling doesn't have the problem that center sampling does in multi-sample antil-aliasing. ATI has supported this form of anti-aliasing for the 9000 series. The tricky part is enabling this when DirectX doesn't easily expose this.

There's a different trick you can use with hardware, such as NVIDIA's, that doesn't support centroid sampling. Basically you trade off some pixel shader bandwidth to clamp the texture coordinates so that you don't sample texels outside of that polygon's lightmap sub-rect.

Between these two approaches, multi-sample anti-aliasing artifacts should be a non-issue for any DX9-level hardware running Pixel Shader 2.0.

3) How will this look?

We'll release one of the demo movies with the anti-aliasing artifacts in and one with the anti-aliasing changes.

Yeah, the "ladder theory" looks like a man's idea of how to figure out women. Good luck with that.....

i can just see carmack having sex with his wife wearing matching VR headsets and VR gloves, so technically yes he still could be a virgin.

BF1942. Yea, I'm not a fan of the engine ether. But, It's great for what it is. The downfalls of the design are strictly because it was made to run on todays internet. What we need is a faster, more improved net to deliver greater amounts of info at incredible speeds. I think there are technologies being worked on right now that should be on the horizon. Then we should start seeing some really fluid internet games with tons of players online.

Only in this board could a topic be so ridiculously steered off topic.

From my experience (Which includes getting banned twice due to infectious immature behavior) I doubt it.

I joined these boards precisely because everyone is so RELATIVELY well-mannered. Still, in that aspect Blue's won't beat any Non-Combat Flightsim-oriented board any time soon.

RC, Try the new 2.0 version of "The Specialists" mod for Half-Life.

All the whining done by Remedy/3DR that they could'nt implement things like "bullett time" in Max Payne in a way that would make it palatable for multiplayer is proven utterly wrong with this mod. They've implemented bullett time, kung-fu moves, John Wu-style diving and shooting, flips, high jumps like in those Hong Kong wire-Fu movies, tons of real world weapons (shotgun someone in the chest and the fly back 20 feet) including akimbo handguns. You can kick a gun out of a players hand and then whip out your gun and shoot them in the face or just punch the crap outta them. All in 3rd or 1st person view.

I have played everything I can stand to play. Im not a fan of BF1942 or the engine. Vice City I haven't tried, but I pretty much only play shooters.

Dude, have you played BF1942 and its mods? Are are you just talking about single player?

It's not an FPS, but check out GTA: Vice City, tons of single player fun.

You guys, I am so damn bored. I am playing through the entirety of Quake 1 single player. Actually it's kinda cool. Reminds me of the 1000's of hours of Quake 1 CTF I played over my 33.6 modem back in the day. The purity of Quake 1 is something everyone should return to now and then. It's refreshing. O

Oh, and I'm playing GLQuake, not software rendered. I was surprised to look back and see how high you could get the Q1 software renderer to go with the resolution though. 1280x1024. Heh, not bad looking either, for what it is.

Man I wish something new would come out. There isn't a single FPS out right now that I find even remotely entertaining.

SweetJimmy,

I understand bro. Remember one thing though. If you are in a messed up situation, it is because you are allowing yourself to be there. A friend of mine once told me that I have to look at myself before I can look at the other person/people involved. I'm not saying you are causing the bad situation, but you are allowing yourself to be in it, and that is undeniable. What you choose to do about that is completely up to you, and no one else.

I'm definately not "Mr. Relationship", although I do have quite a bit of experience to look back on. It took my wife and I 8 years to fully understand each other. All 8 of those years we were either fighting or screwing. Our highs were super high, and our lows were super low. Probably had a lot to do with getting married so young (I was 21). We have both matured to a point where we don't argue much anymore, and we border on reading each other's minds. That's some scary shit. Scary, but cool too.

I'm not reading all these posts, but I assume someone mentioned that its a bit ironic that the AA isues are with Nvidia hardware and not ATI. Expecially since Valve and ATI are in bed together, sounds like a bunch of bullshit if I ever smelled it.

No I don't doubt its technically true, the point is no one noticed these evil artifacts ever before, to the point of complaning about them. Yet, here we are with Valve telling us its been in games before and its some horiable evil glitch... whatever valve, suck my wallet.
