No DOOM 3 This Year

Though id Software basically invented the idea of using "when it's done" as a release date, and thus did not specify a release date when DOOM 3 was announced (story), many have been assuming that the game would be available for this year's holiday season (and jcal points out the DOOM 3 E3 billboard did clearly promise this year). Now a report on HomeLAN Fed cites Activision's 2003 release calendar and quarterly financial conference call to gain a bit more clarity on when to expect the highly anticipated shooter sequel. Activision admits that this matter is entirely in id's hands, but that they are not expecting the game this year, and have it "penciled" on their calendars for fiscal Q4 (Jan-March) 2004. Further actual release date delays were gleaned from the proceedings as well, including word that True Crime: Streets of LA is now due in late fall 2003 and that Rome: Total War, console Call of Duty, Quake IV, and Trinity are now all due in Fiscal 2005 (which begins April 2004).

zi just listened to the conference call jcal referenced which can be found here:

http://www.firstcallevents.com/calplayer.jsp?param=%3CAFIF61%3E4C4qsy%23o%2C+%26%7Cr03&rs=N&real=N

the speaker mentions "for planning purposes we expect Doom 3 to ship in the 4th quarter but as you know, iD software detrmines the shipping date, not Activision" (the statement happens at 19:28 sec in the conference call so you dont have to listen to the rest of dry financial crap) This can either be construed as knowledge of the actual shipping date OR just playing it safe for themselves giving them an "out" if it ships early or late.

just conjecture but might be worth checking into

Can't really I'm pissed off, or supprised for that matter about this. After HL2 went public, DOOM3 just lost a lot of hype for me.

So true. Along with countless other great games actually coming out this year including Deus Ex 2, Stalker, Thief 3, and Max Payne 2. I'd rather upgrade my comp for almost any one of those games rather than upgrade it just for DIII

Cool, that gives me more time to upgrade my PC... and more time to do my school work this comming semester. There's a few other games that I had already planned on purchasing later this year, so this news doesn't bother me. Not like you care. =P

Actually, JC finished the D3 engine over a year ago. It's the content that's taking the time, not the engine. I'm pretty sure that JC is already well into his next gen gfx engine.

36. long gestation period... Jul 22, 2003, 20:33 Jim

All I can say is that this game had better be great, solid, and (for the most part) bug-free. I haven't been counting, but I know id's been working on Doom3 for quite a while now.

At least I should have HL2 to take my attention off the anticipation for a while (and possibly STALKER as well).

As long as they are working to make it godly. This will be the best graphics game out there untill ID makes thier next engine. I think Half life 2 will make the wait alot less painfull. And maybe ID will see what a good game takes to make and follow suit.

A better reason for a 5900Ultra is HL2.

Hmm. That would be a good reason, but you know who this pisses off the most. NVidia.

The only reason anyone would spend 500 on a 5900Ultra is for DoomIII. Now that it isn't coming out till next year, everyone is gonna skip another generation and wait for the next board. That has to be irkin someone at NVidia bad. Real bad. (Yes I was gonna buy a 5900Ultra just for this game, and I'm sure there were hundreds of others like me.)

Shane ;), I agree. In my books (ducks from behind flame shield) the iD FPS games (Wolf/Doom/Quake) were never strong in plot and may not have caused much evolution in the genre gamplay wise. But then they were the inventors of the FPS and arguably make the best engines, so all credit to them.

With doom 3 it does seem they are trying to add a lot more than just pumping out a new engine with some maps (horror survival), so my hat goes off to them in that regard.

Edit: Damn I see Grey just beat me to my own thought...

27. D3 engine love Jul 22, 2003, 20:01 Grey

D3 may not be the best game when it comes to story and/or depth, but the technology that id puts out, allows other developers to take their deep story-driven games to a whole other graphical level. And I for one, can't wait to see what games will take advantage of the D3 engine. Remember Alice?

ut the features of the gameplay is what I am refering to, that was included in Team Arena. And only having "huge" open outdoor levels if you buy team arena? Lame. I honestly believe that they saw christmas coming, so they took the content they had, and polished it up and released it. The released team arena a few months later, and made more money.....lame

Do you "honestly believe" that the computers of 1999 could handle the TA terra maps?

24. Design Schedules are Made, not Born Jul 22, 2003, 19:56 Tanto Edge

People don't ever seem to clue in that (and I know this will sound cocky of me) when a company produces a design document for a game it usually means that they'll stick to it until the game is finished.
Half-Life 2 has been in development since the day that it's predecessor hit the shelves and after seeing the movies I can tell that I'll be happy to play it. Don't think I'm playing up HL2 as the Doom killer (though it probably is), what I'm saying is that DX2, Thief3, and HL2 have all been following a set script for the past years. Just because it's set for next year does not mean that id Software has re-thought their approach (they could have gone back to the designing board, but I doubt this). I most certainly do not believe that id Software is re-conditioning their game as a Half-Life killer. The folks at id Software will make sure that they create a quality product based on their own intentions and Activision (for once) does not have the power to rush them. Thus they're taking their time thorugh the design that they've already created.

Now that that's all said, I'm looking forward to HL2, DX2, Thief3, and Prince of Persia. To me, these look like the instant classics of the next generation.

Oh and one more thing, folks, keep in mind that Valve plans to re-release every popular mod currently using the Half-Life engine and will see that modders have a full toolkit for converting their mods from HL to HL2.
Let's see id Software bring out those kinds of guns.
