There's a TRIBES Vengeance Q&A on PC Gameworld talking with VU Games producer Chris Mahnken. Along the way he picks up the gauntlet when asked about comparisons to other highly anticipated shooter sequels, and tosses it right back:

I think we’ll stand up quite well with those titles, which is really saying something. The Doom 3 engine has no outdoor spaces, and the Half-Life engine has been in development since before Tribes 1 shipped. The real question is how they will match up to Tribes Vengeance game-play.

While I'm sure Trybuhs 3 will be fun, it really shouldn't try to compare itself to HL2 or Dewm 3. It'll come up short in a big way.

At last years Quakecon, Tim Willits, or maybe it was John Carmack, said there were outdoor areas in Doom3, although it wasn't something that played a big part in the game. Now I look at it again, that's an ambiguous statement... I see a future in politics... Please, God, don't let Doom3 or Half-Life 2 match that gameplay.... I'm so looking forward to them and don't want to be disappointed.

So Doom3 will be entirely in cramped quarters? I'll also be interested to see the Unreal engine work in massive outdoor spaces. Obviously if it does, then that opens up a slew of options. I like Tribes1 but it took me a while to get used to such wide open spaces, especially when someone was shooting me from 10 miles away with their basic plasma gun.
