A press release
on The Star Wars Galaxies Website (thanks Jody Overstreet and SWG
Warcry) has a release date for the Star Wars MMORPG as well as a description
of the game's subscription plans. Here's a bit: LucasArts and Sony Online
Entertainment Inc. today announced Star Wars Galaxies: An
Empire Divided, the highly anticipated initial installment of the first
Star Wars massively multiplayer online (MMO) game series, will release
June 26, 2003. The Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided
online fan community now exceeds more than 500,000 registered members.
At launch Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided will
offer four subscription plan options: Month-to-month - $14.99; three months -
$14.00 per month; six months - $13.00 per month; and 12 months - $12.00 per
month. By subscribing to any of the latter three plans, players can expect
savings of up to 20 percent over the month-to-month rate. Star Wars
Galaxies: An Empire Divided has a suggested retail price of $49.95, and
includes a 30-day subscription to the game. A special collector's edition, which
includes a book of game-related art, in-game wearables, pewter figurine, lapel
pin and patch, and a signed manual, will be available for a suggested retail
price of $79.95.

Actually, according to the Devs, they are targeting the "casual player", not the hardcore powergamers. This is why there is so little high end content in the game.
As for the money, it would be nice if some of it actually went to ANY content development, not even "continuining" content development....
Most of that money goes straight into the pocket of the company publishing it, ie Sony. Anybody who believes that running some servers and the bandwith costs millions of dollars per month is just fucking insane. Sure the bandwith is expensive, but for a hundred grand a month, you can buy enough bandwith to download the whole damn internet in half a second. And yes, the servers are expensive, but that's a one time investment. (albeit a big one)
Oh, and for those who will say that some of that money goes to paying the GMs, there will be NO, repeat NO GMs in Star Wars Galaxies.
And the guys maintaining the servers aren't onsite either, whenever their server crashes (which is still quite frequently I might add), you sit around waiting for hours for the fucker to come back up. And then you can try to get in for another hour, because the "that server is loading" or "Your connection to the galaxy has timed out" bugs haven't been fixed either.
I just wish that FOR ONCE, a fucking game developer would do the RIGHT thing, and FIX their fucking product before releasing it. God, I hope that one day we can just sue publishers for false advertising...

Edit : In fact, just to put the whole "bandwith costs millions of dollars!!!!!!!" bullshit to rest, I've looked up some prices. AT&T can provide me with an NxT1-6Mbps for $2.750 dollars per month. You can buy a REALLY huge amount of 6Mbps lines for that one hundred thousand dollars...
