No Xbox Half-Life 2?

Microsoft Xbox losing money despite sales increase on the Puget Sound Business Journal (registration required), quotes David Hufford, a product manager in Microsoft's Xbox group, as saying "As of now, Half-Life 2 is not going to be on the Xbox, Valve is sending us mixed messages on that." "but it was a far more polished and more focused variation of Id Software's DooM when you got right down to it."

Come on. That's got to be one of the most pointless things anyone could say. With that logic i could say that every game is a more polished and focused variation of Pong.

"The only difference was that the premise was less believable."

Oh yeah, demons emerging from Hell to attack a base on mars then move onto Earth. That's FAR more beleiveable than HL. *end sarcasm*
Whether you beleive in hell or not, it's still a far fetched story (not saying it's bad or good, just far fetched)

Pshaw. Like Half Life. It was vaunted and daunted everyone's dream. I mean, looking back, it was a fine game, and it made the industry realize that you could have a superior story within an FPS, but it was a far more polished and more focused variation of Id Software's DooM when you got right down to it. The only difference was that the premise was less believable. At least with DooM, you had a marine who had combat training.

In fact our very first glimpse of Halo was running on a Mac. I've still got those first movies on my HD. I look back on them now and find it hard to imagine getting as excited about them as I did all those years ago.

But you're leaving out the fact that dispite Halo being on the Xbox, it was still the best FPS action game ever made. Yes, the controller wasn't anywhere near as nice as a keyboard and mouse would've been, but i got over it, got used to the Xbox controller (even better, the Controller-S), and thoroughly enjoyed it several times over. I can't wait for the PC version (not as much as HL2 or Halo 2), and hope Gearbox manage to get Co-op in it.

Your right. Micro$oft wanted HALO to be an exclusive for the Xbox only so they backed up a few dump trucks full of cash and Bungie couldn't refuse, thus making HALO a console game instead of a PC game as it was intended to be from the beginning. I had faithfully waited for HALO for so long then when Micro$oft did that, I lost all interest in the game and any faith I had in Bungie was gone forever.

What I don't like is when my PC games get dumbed down for consoles, or like Halo don't even get PC treatment first. I don't like how many of the good developers are making games for xbox instead of PC now, and then porting over their game to PC later, without bothering to include simple PC game features such as save anywhere, better textures, etc.

I agree here. But if you think that Halo lacks a 'save anywhere' option because it is a console game, then I should point out that the Marathon Trilogy (Bungie's previous FPS) used save-points instead of 'save anywhere'. It's just the way they like to do things.

Actually I have great fun playing multiplayer with friends on my PC at home, though the hardware to do this is costly since you need two computers and two monitors for most games. But having two monitors sure beats split-screen gameplay. I have a gaming desktop at home, and my company has issued me a bleeding-edge laptop, so I can network the two for LAN gaming. I play C&C Generals, American Conqest, and UT2003 against friends, and when my dad is in town, we play head-to-head on Virtual Pool 3 (the only computer game he'll play, 'cause he's a big pool fan). I also have two USB gamepads, so I can play head-to-head Madden 2003 or FIFA 2003 on just the desktop PC.

I have a PS2, but the only thing I use it for is Madden NFL and other sports games. 90% of my game time is PC, I've tried other console games, but to me they just suck. I don't care if you get off on your xbox, gcube, ps2, or PC. That's everyone's own choice. What I don't like is when my PC games get dumbed down for consoles, or like Halo don't even get PC treatment first. Thanks red. I knew there had to be intelligent life somewhere in this thread.

It's not a question of which is better. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that the PC is more powerful. A $1000+ PC (or upgrades) every 18 months for the occasional gamer is overkill and they're not willing to spend that much for gaming anyway. And there are some game genres that you just can't get on the PC (unless you wait for an emulator to come out 5 years down the road) or are simply better on consoles. Like fighters (Soul Calibur) and platformers (Super Mario series). Also, having a few friends over to play multiplayer games in your living room while having a few beers does have its appeal over sitting in front of your computer by yourself and logging on to EQ or whatever turns your crank. I don't use my consoles as much as my PC, but I'm still glad I have them. When the PC market is a little slow (no awesome, must-have games), I keep busy with a few console gems like Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Metal Gear, 2 Towers and Super Monkey Ball.

One is not better than the other. It's not that simple. Consoles are more appropriate for some people, and PC's are more appropriate for others. Both involve compromises. If you buy a console, the compromise you accept is not having the very latest and greatest games on bleeding edge hardware. You also don't get mouse-and-keyboard control, and must live with low display resolution. If you buy a PC, your compromises are cost, complexity, time, issues with hardware conflicts, buggy software, and frequent patching. You also won't see too many fighting games, and will have to wait for Halo.

I choose the PC, because it has the best mix of features for me and the games I really like, and I like bleeding-edge. But sometimes I get real frustrated with software installation problems and other technical hassles, and wish I just kept it simple and bought a console.

that's my take... choose your poison...

And just in case you ask, Nonicknameforme, mine hangs down to my kneecaps.

Both sides yell at each other until their gaping Doritos-stained mouths are covered in spittle, recycling the same bullshit arguments that have been around for years. They're like moist, pasty white record players that eat copious amounts of Hostess snack cakes.

What I'm trying to say is that normal, well-adjusted people don't get emotionally involved over silicon and plastic.

The console may be static, but the games on it still improve year after year because of creative programming.

My PCs generally last me two years before an upgrade is mandated because the latest and greatest game runs like crap.

If you're lucky, only a motherboard + CPU + graphics card upgrade is necessary ($750 Canadian for myself over XMAS vs. the then $300 XBOX). Otherwise, it basically warrants a new computer (usually $1500-2200 CDN), with only your monitor & peripherals making the transition.

An XBOX is no substitute for a computer, but for pure gaming goodness, it's a great bang for the buck.
