Rubies of Eventide Goes Live

Rubies of Eventide Goes Live is the press release with word that Cyber Warrior's "bold new massively multiplayer RPG" is online. According to the announcement a retail launch will come later this year, but in the meantime the game client can be downloaded, and used for a 10-day free trial before incurring their $14.95 monthly fee (long term discounts are available). Here's a bit:
About Rubies of Eventide: Rubies of Eventide is a promising example of change in the MMORPG industry. As a second generation massively-multiplayer game, Rubies defies the "Everquest" template by bringing back the classic strategic RPG turn-based combat, with a twist. Rubies unique combat mode is an "asynchronous real-time turn-based hybrid combat." For players this means planning moves strategically with more attention to tactical rather than split-second decisions. Rubies of Eventide has seven player races and over 100 starting professions to choose from. With this system, no one is ever locked into a stereotypical role based on his or her choice of race and can develop their skills in-game, however they please.

And for the record, I don't like loot killing games.. neither do any of the other ladies that play Rubies.

The skills system and level of character customization in this game is very complex. Don't play this game if you are looking for a hack and slash "rpg". The turn-based combat alone should give you some indication that this game is not catering to your usual audience.

"get their greedy hands on my credit card number. "

I think this is for verification and identification purposes more than 'greed'. Besides, would you really want banned or suspended people running amuck with fake accounts griefing your game??

Rubies of Eventide DIDNT ask for cc info during beta. Up until a few days ago you really could have just signed up and had a look around w/o giving your cc number.

The software(downloadable) is still free guys =)

I don't know what you're griping about, this is the ONLY mmorpg that has a refund policy. Even if you prepaid months in advance, you could get refunded. There's really NO risk. When was the last time you could get your $$ back from EQ or UO? lo~l.

This game also looks awesome with 3D goggles. I don't know if you have a pair.. but if you do, its definately worth downloading the game just to check that out.

bye!

Blah, sounds like it will be another camp fest then. zzZzzZZZzzz

I'm a little surprised with Koster (Den Dragon) being the lead designer, I thought he liked open PvP??? Ah well.. next.

I didn't find UO to boring as everytime I stepped out of the cities protection it was always a new and dangerous adventure with 100's of people waiting to gank my (or anyones) ass. Yeah, UO could really get the adrenaline going with its totally open PvP. I played UO for about 1 1/2 years and enjoyed it. EQ sucked me in for about 1 year. I think EQ's draw was the class/race selection along with huge 3D environments and at the time of release it looked good. I beta'd AC but didn't like it all for some reason which I still don't know why so never played release. DAoC held my attention for about 6 months, I felt like I had been there done that. Beta'd EVE and while EVE had super nice graphics and sound I felt the gameplay/fighting was to automated (like Dungeon Siege's fighting system, click on nme and watch) besides the bugs.

In my opinion MMO's can be fun. The trend I see with my interaction with them is that they are becoming less and less innovative and I feel that everytime I play the latest ones it's a 'been there done that' vibe. I was looking forward to WoW until I heard it won't be PvP oriented. Anybody know if SWG is totally Pvp??

I currently don't play any MMO's as they to this point are all buggy and boring to me. I think the 2nd generation of MMO's are simply trying to ride the wave of the first successful MMO's and get a quick cash'in. They certainly are prettier, but bring NOTHING new to the table.

Valzante,

You are right, however, there is one MMORPG currently in development (can't say which, NDA and such), where it is NOT a corpse looting simulation!

You see, they decided to REMOVE loot from corpses, so now you get.. ermm.. nothing...
So I guess that makes it a ... errr ..., infinite monster killer for non existing levels simulator? Oh no, wait, I remember, it's a SOCIAL simulator.

Bwurk.

In regards to Post 26.

Eh. I partially agree. DAOC was fun because of the PVP side of it. The RvR. But your right in the end as far as, your goals. Its experiance either way. It all depends on what you find fun I spose. Even if it is like gambling, people find it fun. Let em be.

And just to add, I think NwN rules.

They are all boring, aren't they... not one game with the MMO moniker has kept my attention for very long, and I'm more about exploring than getting the code to power up. Anarchy Online come's the closest to portraying some amazing vistas, most the others are amazingly boring. With the worst being Asherons Call 2, or Planetside as a close second. I'm rooting for Horizons, but if it falls on its face I honestly wont be suprised.

MMORPGs are, as a rule, a waste of money. They eventually boil down to one thing: Killing stuff and getting loot. You can try to prove me wrong by citing (insert new fangled MMORPG name here) and how it (Insert seemingly new economic/strategic/combat/leveling/skill systems here), but the truth is they all are nothing more then corpse looting simulators. I have quite a few friends who, on occasion, will go back to DAOC or EQ and rave about how much fun it is to them again. I love how I get to tease them when they come back a month later and tell me I was right for calling it a waste of time.

The fact is, these games are *not* RPGs. Heck, they aren't even Computer RPGs...they are no different then a casino...instead of pulling on a lever and looking for quarters, you kill a rat and look for the expensive tail it will drop 5% of the time. There really is no difference.

The only good use of your internet connection is something simplistic and visceral...like a good FPS (BF 1942). These MMORPGs are laughably pathetic, and I don't think I'll ever understand why all of these kids are drawn to them. None of them last more then a month on my HD, and I've played enough to feel fairly confident when I say they are all a waste of money.

One thing I can say is that at least NWN got the whole "RPG" thing right. They made it possible for a talented RPG'er to create his or her own world and then run a real campaign with it, with the player as a live DM. As far as I'm concerned, if I'm going to play an RPG online, it is going to be a NWN module run by a live DM.

I think the most ive had at once was three. So I was paying around 45 bucks a month for online games. Insanity. I realized then, eh screw it, ill play one, MAYBE two at a time. But if I dont play one for more then 2 weeks, I just cancell, becuase most likely I wont go back for the next couple of months or so.

Sure, one game comes out that charges monthly, then two, then four, then eight. Who is going to keep paying for these?
Can anyone afford to pay $10-20($14-27can) for each game montly? The market for these games is narrowing down fast.

Some of the MMORPGs will offer the free trial download. Asheron's Call 2 had one. So did Earth & Beyond.

edit: Not to mention Anarchy Online.

Except with the above games you still had to go out and purchase the game when the trial ended.

=========
of the one hundred and fifteen MMORPGS out there.

Still, offering a free download that you can try is cool. It most definitely beats the "give us 50 bucks, then your credit card number, and then we'll let you play. If you can get on that is."

I might give this a shot, but Galaxies Beta is taking up quite some time (most of it spent in grumbling on their beta boards).

Dont think anyone said thats a bad thing. I like that formula as well. (Didnt a couple others offer a download trial as well?)

Id much rather download, play for a week or two, then decide if its worth getting the full retail version.

Sorta like how Neocron was a waste of my coin. Even if it was 20 bucks (that should of been my frist warning).

They started advertising this back in '98 in CGW, haha. It was announced YEARS before DNF.

Cyberwarrior used to be my ISP. Actually, I used them as a free newsgroup/irc server when I was in HS, a few of the employees went to HS with me. They stopped all ISP services a few years back and went straight into developing this.

I don't know how they stayed in business all this time. Their office was across the hall from the Merrill Lynch I worked at. Not the most expensive place, but they still had rent, and a small army of pasty kids in metallica t-shirts.

BTW, I played this in open beta about 3 weeks ago.. and I was amazed they are still pushing this as some kind of commercial product. The graphics are worse than old-school EQ, and there was a healthy amount of lag (with broadband). I couldnt make it out of town without seeing crazy amounts of people popping in and out.
