My purpose is life is to hate this game anyways, so here's more. I noticed neither Shiny nor the official site have any sort of support board for this game. I doubt that's a mistake. Hell, I had to get the patch off of FileShack, since the Atari support site was down. Meanwhile, GameFAQ's ETM board is on fire. I wanna mail Shiny a turd, unlike theirs it won't cost $50.

Just as I figured, the patch did nothing to help my performance issues. The framerate is shit, hovering around 10 fps during the heat of battle, and dipping lower if there's a lot of transparency going on. This is at 800X600, no filters, no AA, EAX off. And I have an Athlon XP 2000 w/ GF4 4400 and 512 memory. Absolute crap. This is why it's very hard not to warez games without demos.

It's like Jada and Anthony were on their lunchbreak, and did the scenes in-between healthy bites of their sandwiches.
I noticed that also...cue card central.
When Jada says the line about "Are you Red or Blue on this?" I was waiting for George Lucas to step out of the wings and admit he'd written the crappy dialogue.

I honestly have no desire to continue the game, but "is this the patch that makes it fun?"
LOL, I'm thinking i'll just put it on the shelf for a few months and wait for the 9th or 10th patch to see if it magically becomes a good game! (Not that Shiny will offer that kind of extended support.)
Auto aim is GAY, wtf is that about?

Like the good Major said, shouldn't have expected anything great out of a movie license, but man, someday, somebody's going to get it right. I mean, they just HAVE to...right?
Also, Creston hit the nail on the head about the relese date. When was the last time a good PC game ever made a date set for it? Whenever they do, they are rushed. 2 patches in 2 days is like "Look, we know what we released sucked, but we really wanted your money. Will this token gesture make it up to you?"
The answer, sadly, is no.

Ya I was disapointed with the auto aim as well, thats one of the big things that alerted me to the fact that its still a console game, the other being that if its not in focus(which it doesnt hold at all)it in a sence closes its self, so whoever was wondering how they did it I dont think you want to do it this way.
You can however jump into first person mode and have a janky free aim, its definitly not to par with fps in aiming.
I have found kung fu fighting rather fun, specialy in the later levels when you fight more advanced guys, and yes its just punch, kick and throw, but there is special moves and combos and blocking. It really is more comprehensive then I originaly thought.

2 patches in two days... impressive, Shiny, impressive. Yup, you hit the nail on the head, the last good Shiny game was MDK. I'm sorry they were rushed, but that ain't my problem, you still probably had two years to do the game. Even the acting in the live-action footage is lifeless. It's like Jada and Anthony were on their lunchbreak, and did the scenes in-between healthy bites of their sandwiches. Max Payne w/ kung-fu mod was light-years ahead of this manure. I shoulda blown the $50 on cocaine, the pleasure would've lasted longer.

I'm glad I listened to you. I would really hate to sit at home right now with another 50 dollars of crap installed on my harddrive. No offense or gloating intended to any of you guys who did go out and get it.
The one thing that had me most worried about it (apart from the fact that it was from Shiny...blergh) was that it HAD to be released on May 15th, ready or not. Most software developers have shown that they don't work well under that kind of pressure, and tend to release sloppy product if forced to do so.
Unfortunately, this seems the case as well here. While having a patch out on opening day isn't anything new anymore, I can't remember a game that had TWO patches out in the first TWO DAYS of its release. 
The only thing I'm left wondering is if this is purely a PC problem, it being an apparently totally shitty port (well done Perry, well done indeed.), or if the game sucks to begin with.
Maybe I'll rent the playstation 2 version, just to see those movies.
Btw, guys, for those of you aggravating yourself in playing through to watch the movies, they're actually in .avi format in your gamefolder somewhere. Or at least, so someone claimed in a different thread yesterday.
Creston, really annoyed that what could have been such a good game got turned over to a crap developer.

I doubt Blue has enough web space to handle the full list of whats wrong with this game so I'll just hit the major points
-The game aims for you. This alone was a deal-breaker for me.
-You follow the arrow. Yes instead of actually playing the level, there's an arrow at the top that just points you along. This seems a crude way to slop over gameplay on a title that wasn't ready yet.
-No blood *sigh*
-You are limited in your Kung Fu moves. You have 'punch' and 'kick'. Basically it's a button masher. I don't know why more games can't learn from the good example set by Oni.
-There's a lobby scene (surprise) where bullets hit columns (surprise), the panels of the columns actually come off like in the movie, and the plaster underneath actually deforms a little, but I can tell you that the lobby scene in Max Payne was far better in every way, especially the particle effects of bullets hitting the marble.
-Bullets travel way too slow in real time. This was actually a small complaint I had about Max Payne. There was a perceptible delay between your shot and the bullet hitting the wall. I know they had to do it so as to render the bullet as a real object that moves through space so you could see it in "bullet time". The bullets in 'enter the matrix' travel slower in real time than Max Payne bullets.
Did I mention the game aims for you? *sigh*

I just bought it for the continuation of the Matrix and that is what I'm getting.
I'm even playing it on the easy setting, I started on hard but I just want to play it for the story line and for that it is pretty cool. Especially since you can play both characters and both have different plots in the game.
I'm happy with it, I'll sell it on ebay once I'm done and I will get my moneys worth IMHO.

LOL, Major, good point. I know they usually suck, but I was really hoping this one would be different. I don't even have enough interest in the game to get to the cut scenes that the Wychowski brothers wrote. And I won't buy an x box, either. I guess I'll just start boycotting games that don't come out on the PC first. Everyone that has been in development with the xbox or some other platform in mind has NEVER been that good on the PC. At least not that I've played, and for me that includes GTA 3, which I guess most people liked.
I'm waiting till monday to watch the movie, I hope it's better than the game.

nin, glad i'm not the only one...wish i'd of passed on it.
If they just wanted to make an x-box game, they should have devoted all their time to it, and not tried to attempt a pc version.
I have always been faithful to shiney, only because once, a very long time ago, they put out a game called MDK.
It's been years and several sloppy PC titles later, (Messiah, anyone?) and I still had to give them the benefit of the doubt, just because I'm such a huge matrix fan.
Not anymore. Dave Perry, enjoy my fifty, cause it's the last one you'll ever see from me.

A game made from a movie to be good? Have not seen one yet that I recall. I picked this up today, and have only been into the first level, so cant really comment fairly on it. My quick first impression is that the third person view just does not feel comfortable. The camera views get annoying on and off (typical in a console port game usually) The controls are very configurable though, including the mouse, so that makes it easier. Otherwise, it does not look too bad so far...
I wonder how many have bought the game, it just came out a couple days ago, right? |
