The Matrix Online

As the second Matrix movie nears release, The Matrix Online website has gone live (thanks Cypher), offering the first Flashy details about the MMO Matrix game, planned for launch next year. Included is a FAQ, some concept art, and a press release with some info about this project that's being co-developed by Monolith and EON Productions. There is also an E3 preview of the game on PC.IGN.Com. Here's a bit from the press release:

Warner Bros. Studios and Ubi Soft Entertainment, one of the world's largest video game publishers, will co-publish The Matrix Online, the first massively multiplayer online (MMO) game based on Warner Bros. Pictures' vastly influential Matrix property.

Under the terms of the worldwide exclusive deal, Ubi Soft will distribute and maintain the live game operations of The Matrix Online, while Warner Bros. Studios will oversee all story and content development. Both companies will supervise ongoing game development and marketing activities for the MMO game. Following the beta test in 2003, The Matrix Online is expected to launch in 2004.

Set in a virtual persistent universe in which millions of players around the globe ban participate, The Matrix Online will feature cutting-edge graphics, real-time martial arts combat and a rich storyline that picks up where The Matrix Revolutions, the third chapter in the Matrix film trilogy, leaves off.

Jenna Jameson's part as Candy Suxxx is just quality, especially Tommy's face, jaw hanging on the floor, when he watches her shoot a scene.

So nin, how is the Enter the Matrix game? You better tell us tomorrow!

I liked GTA3 but the music did get on my nerves and I ended up turning it down and turning the MP3s up. This sounds like a definite improvement.

Check out the back page of the manual...they've got Dennis Hopper, Ray Liotta, and a whole bunch of other famous people to voice parts. (And Jenna Jameson to play a porn star...hmmm.)

And hey! Nothing beats cruising down the road listening to Corey Heart's "Sunglasses At Night" on the radio!

I am having a blast with Vice City right now...licensing actual 80s bands for the radio stations was a great idea.

Vice City is out? Hell yeah I'm making a special trip to but that sucker today.

Well, my copy of the game should (famous last words) be here today (Thursday)...I'm a sucker, I know. I've never been a fan of Dave Perry, so if it sucks, I'll be screaming loud and clear...

I've never given a flying fuck about the reviews of any movie. If reviewers were to be believed, we'd all still be watching frigging Tootsie, because that's the only movie worth watching according to them (AND the Academy).

Also, from what little I have read and heard, the movie seems to end rather abruptly, like with a massive cliffhanger. Instead of focusing on creating two movies that follow each other closely, it seems as if the Wachowski's decided to make one giant four hour movie, and just hack it in two.
While the latter will probably guarantee everyone will go see Revolutions in November, it would probably make for some very unpleasant feelings once you realise you just watched essentially half a story, and have to wait half a year just to see the other part.

I'm sure I will enjoy it anyways, and, as you say, the original was bashed by those selfsame reviewers that were touting its "originality and vision" not six months later when it came out on DVD... Movie critics...

On the game, there are still no reviews out ANYWHERE. For me, a game that gets no reviews before it lands on the shelf is a very suspicious thing. Because 99% of the time it means the game stinks so bad the publishers are hoping to sell a lot of copies before anyone finds out that it actually sucks.

IGN, well known for liking every game in existence and giving 70% to even the most mediocre games, had a preview a little while ago, and even they said that the game appeared rather... mediocre.

I guess my original plan to go get both movie tickets and a copy of the game will be adjusted a little.

Be sure to come back tonight and tell us how it was, nin

Mine's tomorrow night (Thursday)...I thought about a 10:00 show tonight at AMC, but I can be a pretty grumpy person when I don't get my sleep (And I have to get to work early)...

I am a little alarmed about the reviews that haven't been positive, but then again, I realize the original wasn't exactly a critic favorite.

And like Scott said below, don't miss the preview at the end!

That's what I'd like to know too. Damn this "release the game before the reviews so lots of people will buy it not knowing what it is" crap. I wish SOME game review site / magazine somewhere would be decent enough to actually post a review of this game before tomorrow...

Yes yes, I know I can wait a couple of days before getting it, but tomorrow is The Matrix Day!!!

In one way I want to rush out and get this game, but then there is that part of me that keeps saying that Shiny hasn't produced anything I really like yet, and that somehow this game isn't going to be this good etc.

Come on, I know there has to be a warez monkey somewhere that already downloaded this, tell us what it's like!

That's interesting.... the local Fox News station here in Washington DC ran an almost identical story a couple of weeks ago..... heck, for all I know it's a story the network did and made available to all the different Fox stations.... I can't remember if the EQ story here was framed as a local story or not.... I don't think they mentioned anything specifically local.

20. A bit off topic but interesting May 14, 2003, 13:47 Furious

******** Off topic FYI ********

Speaking of MMORGP's

If you live in the Greater Boston, Massachusetts area, Fox News at 10:00 PM will be having a story on EverQuest and how it 'steals' people away from their work and family lives. One sound byte from a weak minded EQ subscriber on the radio "It's just to hard to play for less than 20 hours a week.". So the media once again will show a minority of gamers (weak minded) who can't control themselves while playing video games and making the video game industry look evil. I don't know about anyone else but I had NO problem playing < 10 hours a week with EQ. This news clip will be good for comic relief before bed
