PlanetSide on May 20

Sony Online Entertainment sends word that PlanetSide, their MMOFPS, will launch in North America on May 20. Here's the announcement, which includes more on plans to integrate voice communication into the game:

Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE), a worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online gaming, announced that its highly-anticipated massively multiplayer online first-person action game, PlanetSide(tm) will make history when it launches on May 20. The groundbreaking game will allow thousands of players to fight online in an all-hours-of-day global war that has never been seen before in the first-person action genre. The company also announced that it will add squad-based voice chat functionality to PlanetSide, further enhancing the experience of fighting together with a squad and working as a team. PlanetSide will be available on May 20, 2003 in North American retail stores.

"There has never been an online action game as ambitious as PlanetSide. We are combining a game world that can support the fast action of a first person shooter with the character growth, development and scale of an MMORPG," said Michael Lustenberger, director of product marketing at Sony Online Entertainment. "The result is a truly new and unique experience as players are immersed in battle with thousands of other people from across the country, while they hone their skills and become elite combat units."

PlanetSide has a suggested retail price of $49.99, which includes a 30-day free trial subscription to the game's online world. Additionally, the game will carry a monthly subscription fee that will be announced at a later date for continuing access to the game world. Players can subscribe for additional months using a credit card, or purchase PlanetSide 90-day Game Cards, which open the PlanetSide universe to those who choose not to use a credit card.

I hear alot of shit about repetitiveness, and there not being a point to anything... but how is that different from a normal FPS that cycles through the same 10 maps over and over and over? I've been playing SOF2 since it fucking came out, and yeh its really repetitive - but thats the damn point. Its just a game where you shoot people online, and thats what I enjoy. The thing PS does is raise the playing field to the MMO status. I may not play it for the rest of my life, but I sure will for a few months at least. If its got problems, I wanna see em for myself.

You need to buy the 49.99 version. You're beta CD-Key is not a valid key for the retail version.

If it was the case, it would actually be worth paying for. And we wouldn't want that now would we.

werd.

I've been in the open beta for about 3 weeks and i really like it ... I'm not going to get into all the details about why, I just do...

i get so sick of coming to this board and hearing (reading) everyone bash EVERYTHING that comes along. I mean really. Do ANY of the regular posters here have anything positive to say aout ANYTHING ... it just gets old. I mean ... we could all still be playing Air Sea Battle ... ahh ... now THOSE were the days...

That said... we have to remember that it is just a beta... hopefully Sony will come through with the final release. Time will tell... I'll be buying it on the 20th ... actually ... i'll be in Mexico on the 20th ... but I'll get it the second I get back...

Not that anyone cares. Please, feel free to continue bashing.

peace

I've been playing in the beta (exclusive and open) quite a bit. I like it. I've preordered and yeah, I'll probably pay for it after the first month. I like the huge battles, and the sense of scope. It kinda makes up for the actual combat which isn't as good as non-massively multiplayer shooters (go figure). For some reason though I find it very entertaining to have persistent characters and large-scale allegiances.

It's definitely something that polarizes people though. Hard-core FPS fans don't like the "shooter lite" trappings, and hard-core MMORPG types find it all rather pointless (and don't like the dumbed-down character/skill options). What it does offer is something that IMO you can't get anywhere else: large-scale shooter battles far bigger than any other game, with a veneer of RPG and MMOG trappings. Just enough IMO to keep it interesting for a while. How long is the question.

I have been in the beta for about a month now... As it is I won't be buying it. Not that it is bad, but it is not good enough to warrant a purchase. They need to work on the weapon balance a little more. The vehicles are cool but I have seen better use of vehicles in Tribes2 and BF1942. Last, the frame rate is not all that good, even though I am just a tad over the recommended system requirements.

I'll probably watch how it progresses for about 6 months and decide then. This year is bringing some pretty cool non-MMORGP games which these MMO's do have to compete with. Yeah, definelty not knocking the game, just gonna sit back and see how these soon to be released MMO's fair.

Just like tribes, only tribes is about 100 times funner.

Please don't compare this joke to tribes. Other than a few similarities like vehicles, large scale combat, bases, few other minor things, the gameplay is completely different.

Let's play with the wayback machine. It's 1998, and Tribes just came out. A fun, team based capture the flag game with vehicles, jumpjets, and bases. Combat occurs inside and outside. Maps are vast and rolling. Teamplay is essential to winning, and many vehicles and weapons need more than one person to use properly.

Zoom back to the present, and you will see that Planetside is essentially a MMO version of Tribes. Many, if not MOST of the gameplay elements in Tribes exist in Planetside as well. If you liked Tribes (or Tribes 2 after it was patched) back then, you'll like Planetside now.

It has steep requirements. Don't even attempt to play with under 384MB of RAM, and 512 is smarter. 1GB is nice... and yes, it really can use 1GB of RAM, without leaking a single KB of memory. For video card, a Geforce is a good idea... my GeForce 2 GTS gets about 30fps normally and 15fps in combat, and that's with ALL the options turned as low as possible.

And as far as how fun it is... well, that's up to you. Visit a friend who has it.

Personally, I love it. My Brother-in-law, his father and brother, and my neighbor are all in a squad together most nights. The integrated voice chat is still buggy-as-hell but is improving, and it's hellishly fun to take bases and hold them against all comers.

Like all MMO games, it's more about the people you play with than the goals in the game. You may wish to hold off a few months on buying the game (I know I'm going to hold off until I upgrade my computer), or you may wish to jump in right away. I think it's a damn fun game, and it offers teamplay that no other game currently offers.

I consider Planetside to be the spiritual successor to Tribes 2... think of it as Tribes 3, without the Starseige license. If that sounds good to you, then try it out.

You're probably going to hear the same thing from most of the thousands of beta testers which is: It's not bad, but pointless. There's no way you can "win" you just trade bases with other players. They've really only implemented a very, very basic core gameplay infrastructure so far, the shooting is there, but little else, they promise to add lots more over time, but what good does that do right now? Tons of us have told them to delay release and add some more depth... as it is now paying any more then $5 a month would be absolutely crazy for a private server game that is like a big public server DM (and still has loads of lag problems).

There's no customization, no rankings, no destroying or creating, no story events... It's gotta be sooner rather then later we warned ya devs.

12. Ready for release May 5, 2003, 18:37 Quboid

I'm a beta tester in the 2 big MMO imminent releases - EVE and Planetside. Neither are ready for release which I think is a real shame because they both have huge potential. Of the 2, Planetside is certainly the more stable but it's got a way to go yet. At very least, they've got to fix the memory leak, at least what I assume is a leak as it takes up my 768MB, a decent figure.

The biggest gameplay problem is probably the lack of a real goal. Taking bases and then islands (or continents, as they fancifully call them) is fine, but a few hours later it's gone back. The game is supposed to last, say, a year, yet the biggest target in the game takes a few hours usually, a day or so at most (and any one player won't be involved in most of that unless they're in an Asian internet cafe). Sooner or later this will get repetitive...

That said, the game is very enjoyable and I've had a good time. I'd consider subscribing for a while, although I might wait a couple of months for the problems to get sorted out.

Cheers,
Quboid

I don't care how good it is, I will NEVER pay a monthly subscription to play a game and I can easily afford to do so. It's total greed by the software company and I really hope it's another MMORPG flop!

The game has been a long time in the making and sounded realy cool almost THREE years ago but after games like BF1942 its kinda too late.
