Hmm... So if those who read Shacknews are Shackers, what are people who read Blues News? Bluesers? That doesn't sound quite right... "BluNes" or "BluNies"?
I like the first one (pronounced "Blunes" - rhymes with "prunes" The second would rhyme with "loony").

It's out of beta now, so there is a charge to use the service, but honestly, it works for me. Barring any special circumstances you may have, it will probably work for you too. Check it out: http://www.cloudmark.com/
And for those of us who are, er, cashflow-impaired, there's POPFile:
http://popfile.sourceforge.net/
This is a free spam proxy that identifies spam using Bayesian filtering (basically, statistical analysis of text, the same thing that many of the big spam filters use, when they don't use the database-of-spam method). Since it is a proxy, it works with any email system that uses POP3 protocol.
I thought I would have to train it a bit to get it to be useful, but I guess they already ran some sample spam through it, since it hasn't missed more than a spam or two... Your mileage may vary.

I've been real happy with Cloudmark Spamnet. Basically, the system keeps a database of spams. If you get a spam, you simply mark it as spam. It dissapears, and this spam is reported to Spamnet. After a certain threshold is reached, the spam is recognized as true spam, and acted upon as the user has designated it should be acted upon. (Delete it, move it to a separate folder, etc...) Really nice, and it's been super effective for me. It's out of beta now, so there is a charge to use the service, but honestly, it works for me. Barring any special circumstances you may have, it will probably work for you too. Check it out: http://www.cloudmark.com/

| I just think it's funny that the NY Times articles generally deal with protecting your online privacy and reducing spam, yet they force you to register for their site - no doubt putting you on their own spam list. |

The funny thing is that Cinco de Mayo is a bigger holiday in the USA than in Mexico. It's the biggest excuse to go to a Mexican restaurant and drink tequila since... well, who really needs an excuse to do that?

I couldn't get the pics to come up...thanks for the info though! I wasn't familiar with the story behind the holiday, so your info was educational.

Too many stories from a site that requires registration.. free or not. What happened to all the cool info from sites I've never heard of?? Let's keep NY Times links to a minimum.. that's mainstream news... I appreciate news from places I wouldn't get normal 'news'.
Thank you.

Well, as yall know today is Cinco de Mayo. Im sure some of you think this is Mexican Independence day or some shit, but I know shackers are generally a smart group and know that La Batalla (battle) de Cinco de Mayo was actually a fight between the Mexicans and the French.
When Benito Juarez was president, Mexico owed a LOT of money to other nations, including Spain and France. So, Juarez permited these nations to stay in the harbours of Mexico to collect money. Under Napoleon III, the French decided they wanted to take Mexico. With the US in Civil war, the Monroe Doctrine was not going to be much of an issue. So, the French took over and pushed Juarez and his constitutional democracy north. One of the key battles to kick the French out and obviously one of the biggest was what the Mexicans call "La Batalla de no intervencion." The big name from this battle was Porfilo Diaz who then became ruler of Mexico durring the last half of the 19th century and brought Mexico up to speed with the rest of the world, while keeping the poor opressed.
Anyhoo, last July I visited "Las Fuertas" (The forts) in Puebla where the battle was fought and my little digital camera was there.
http://www.shackspace.com/~rosewood@shackmail.com/puebla/ - all the pictures
http://www.shackspace.com/~rosewood@shackmail.com/puebla/P7160004%20(Medium).JPG Large flag outside the museum. Note the hill there. This would NOT have been a fun place to fight a war.
http://www.shackspace.com/~rosewood@shackmail.com/puebla/P7160005%20(Medium).JPG The grass where a lot of the fighting took place. The sign reads: Here died 100s of (our) compadres on the 5th of May of 1862 for defending the pinciple of "No Intervention"
http://www.shackspace.com/~rosewood@shackmail.com/puebla/P7160007%20(Medium).JPG This shows a tactic that kinda fucked up the french when they tried to storm the walls of the fort. They thought the walls were not as high, and they got stuck down in that little trench.
http://www.shackspace.com/~rosewood@shackmail.com/puebla/P7160009%20(Medium).JPG The gates to the fort (and museum now inside) and some poor old mexican gaurd
http://www.shackspace.com/~rosewood@shackmail.com/puebla/P7160011%20(Medium).JPG The flag that flew over the fort durring the battle
http://www.shackspace.com/~rosewood@shackmail.com/puebla/P7160016%20(Medium).JPG A view from inside the fort looking at the walls.
http://www.shackspace.com/~rosewood@shackmail.com/puebla/P7160017%20(Medium).JPG Puebla is up in the mountains and you can see how quickly the land drops off from these fort walls. You can also see the city in this picture.
http://www.shackspace.com/~rosewood@shackmail.com/puebla/P7160019%20(Medium).JPG Thats one of the Volcanos that surrounds Puebla. I think this is La Malinche but it could be Popocatepetl. I never really learned which was which.
http://www.shackspace.com/~rosewood@shackmail.com/puebla/P7160020%20(Medium).JPG Another view outside the fort. Again you can see how this helped a few mexicans kick a lot of French ass!
There are some more pictures there, including the HQ shots. One that doesnt have to do with the forts but I know you will ask me about is http://www.shackspace.com/~rosewood@shackmail.com/puebla/P7160026%20(Medium).JPG We caught a bus to go back from the forts and in the median area between a side street and the main road was this dog carcus. Dogs are EVERYWHERE in Mexico and I think I saw 3-4 different dog carcuses
I dont want to end on a sad note, so Feliz Cinco de Mayo!!!

| Filters don't seem to be the answer, they are figured out quite quickly. My ISP actually will go after spammers for me if i report them. And for everything else there is Spamcop.net. Admittedly my wife gets a more spam than i do and hers is mainly of the adult nature.... I don't get any adult spam..... |

I just don't get any. Had 1 piece so far this year, which is actually a record. Maybe my ISP is filtering it all for me, I dunno.
Cinco de whato? If that's translates to 'Bank Holiday', then thanks. It's good to have a 3-day weekend in early May. Ah, 2 weeks until the end of my courses... No more education until September.

Instead of using a POS filter, which still has me checking out flaged emails for false positives. I've done the foloowing:
My personal hotmail account bounces everything that isn't in my contact list, if I give someone my email address... I have to add them, or email them first.
At work my webmaster@whereIwork.com (yes I'm a webmaster too) is an auto-reply telling the emailer to fill out a webform to send me a message, then we can correspond through my true work email which gets no spam. (I imagine it gets none because that addy isn't published/listed/typed anywhere etc..)
The webmaster auto-reply is using procmail (in unix) so it's smart enough to let DAEMON messages pass through.
