22. Re: Opera spyware Apr 22, 2003, 19:57 Pedle Zelnip

I use IE and ALT-TAB works fine for me...

True enough, but the problem with IE & ALT+TABing is that each window adds an item to the taskbar. Isn't so much a big deal when you're only browsing, but quite often I'll have Opera open with a few sites, my e-mail client, and maybe a few other programs open at the same time, so the the tabbed browsing helps in situations like this (as all sites appear as only one tab on the taskbar, so it's easy to switch between Opera & my e-mail client for example). Minor feature, but on the whole this is why I like Opera better. There isn't really one killer feature that sets it above the rest, but rather on the whole it seems to be a much better designed browser.

As for IE installing programs, well it does ask to install things....

As someone else pointed out, some web designers are getting a little less ethical than normal, and doing stuff like clicking no means yes, etc. I'm not sure Opera's the answer to this, as you still get the "Accept/Deny" type security warnings while browsing with Opera.

I considered trying a different browser before, but didn't see a need for it....

I can kinda understand this, but as the saying goes, "you don't know what you're missing". Unless you've tried both, I don't see how anyone can say one is better than another. On the other hand though, one of the reasons I haven't already tried Phoenix/Firebird/whatever is because of the problems Mozilla caused for me the last time I tried it out, so I can understand the tendancy to err on the side of not trying something out. If for no other reason, I'd recommend giving Opera (or any IE alternative) a try because the "IE comes with Windows so I use it" thinking tends to stifle innovation and competition (remember that little anti-trust suit a while back?).
