well, good for you if stalker excites you, but HL2 isn't even officially being unveiled yet. you're seeing scans of a magazine, and that picture you pasted from HL2 is, if you'd bother to read the article, from an UNTEXTURED beta version of a level. that's why the walls are orange. the picture was to show the level development process.

I do bash games over graphics because games these days that have horrible graphics are an insult to all gamers. I'm not saying that it should be all graphics and no gameplay. I'm also not saying that there should be a balance. There should always be exceptional graphics and exceptional gameplay. If gameplay and ESPECIALLY graphics aren't at par with the best on the market at the time of release or pushing the envelope than I believe that the developers should hold off and not put out another piece of garbage. It's common sense. Too bad I'd be in heaven if that was what really happened.
Anyways, I am not really against half-life 2. I liked half-life 1 and it was one of the few PC shooters that I actually played through. I wouldn't be surprised if this sequel is a major disappointment though. From what I've seen, the graphics seem to be in the pushing the envelope category but I'm not really a fan of what I've seen. I am not enthused about this game whatsoever but when it comes out I'm sure I'll try it out. I feel the same about Doom 3. Also when I see so much hype for a game I tend to think about how assy it will really be *cough* unreal 2 *cough*
When I see screenshots of STALKER and after I read what they have planned for the gameplay I am extremely excited about the possibilities. On the STALKER site alone I've read more about the game and its features than I have seen anything about Doom 3 or HL2. Even if they deliver half of what they are promising it is enough for me to be one of the first in line throwing my money at the 16 year old punk at the games store on *crosses fingers* November. Also even if it is going to be a game of poor quality it seriously looks like they have put in an assload of work.. moreso (is that even a word?) than most of the games that have been released lately (postal 2). I wouldn't mind supporting the relatively small and unknown company that are doing their best to enterain the world.
Also I find it amusing how people are gearing their computer upgrades for Doom3 and probably now HL2's release. I'm more concerned about my upgrade to get the full graphical benefits out of STALKER. Anyone have any idea when the new geforces come out?
Well that's the end of my pointless opinionated nonsensical rant. It's like an essay ... I dedicate it to Creston.

You are right; these issues can be applied to any and every upcoming game. I am just hopeful that HL2 is great because I want to have as much fun as I did have (am having :D) with Half-Life. If I was to take a direct comparison between the two games, I am already more excited by what I have seen from Half-Life 2 (because of the design/enemies/world/what have you) and the Half-Life crew has made one of my favorite PC games. Granted, it is the only game they have made, but it is still one of the greatest.
I am very hopeful for S.T.A.L.K.E.R., but it just seems little too good to be true. I fully expect the game to take at least another year, have severe performance problems (at high graphical settings), have the graphics overpower the gameplay, etc. I hope that I am wrong - if I am wrong, big w00ts to all - but I do have my reservations.
It is a bit of an unfair comparison, though. With Half-Life 2, I already know who I will be playing, what I can look forwrd to, whom the various characters are, what happened in the past, that the promises can be true, etc.
It is all opinion, though. I just hate when people (this is in no way referencing your post) bash X game over Y game based simply upon the graphics.
Thinking I need to clean out some of my older PC games again, Ray

Back to......Half-Life Those are very hypocritical statements. No mean to offend you because you're one of the nicer people on this board, but everything you said can be applied to half-life 2 as well.. not as much the req's since I haven't seen and for HL2 nor do I care but ya.
A lot of questions about STALKER are answered here: http://www.stalker-game.com/index.php?t=game&s=gameplay&ss=faq There was some more info about the requirements but it was too long to post. They are at the faq in the url. Usually recommended requirements seem like minimum req's anyways and the average gamer should know that. Usually the game is unplayable with min. req's.

Come on, Dan, you know those have to be outdated and/or subject to change. Well, maybe the "minimum" will stay put, we all know how developers essentially lie about those, but the final "real-world" requirements will be far higher than that.
On a semi-related note, I think that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. looks nice, but that is about it. I just have a number of questions that I would like answers to. When will it really be out? What will the requirements really be? What shortcuts were taken with regards to the graphics? How interactive/dynamic will the environments ultimately be? How well will the gameplay actually hold up?
I am interested, that is for sure, but I am hesitant about proclaiming its greatness without first knowing more or finding out its actual, I would bet far away, release date.

Is GTA 3 and Mafia really freeform though? There's a set of missions you have to complete in the game or you don't beat it. In GTA 3 you can do cab missions and vigilante missions but that's just a little extra. You can also go anywhere you want but you don't really accomplish anything.
Edit: btw here are the req's for STALKER.. pretty surprising Q: What requirements S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will have? A: The minimal specifications for the game are: P3-600 MHz/Athlon, 128 Mb RAM, GeForce 2 64 Mb (or analog). Recommended specifications: P3-1 GHz/Athlon, 256 Mb RAM, GeForce 3 64 Mb (or analog).

Holy shit! I haven't looked at any Stalker shots in a LONG time and man the graphics ROCK. The first screens didn't look like much but those kick ass. That game looks superb and if they can pull off the gameplay, then we'll have something very nice.
EDIT : Just went over to the stalker site. DAMN! Some of those screens look like photographs.
EDIT : HOLY SHIT. You're right Dan. This one is HL rivalling material.

I still don't know. I just do not know. Yeah, the visuals are a site to behold, yet they are no guarantee for strong gameplay - be it linear OR free-form. I recall the slathering by some over Red Faction with it's geo-mod tech and fans blowing grenade smoke this way and that, and the screenshots galore. Then lo and behold the gameplay (and hence the game itself) was a let down. And free-form gameplay I think is in its infancy, with maybe two games doing it well? (GTA 3 & Mafia), so....I just don't know!

poster 151 asked what the big deal is about TF2. Many of us N00bs out there, used to play a little game called Team Fortress for quake 1. It was the first REAL taste of what online team based gaming could be. Personally, some of my best experiences gaming were done in that game. Many of us who are old school TFers would love to see whats up with TF2 since we've been waiting for several years now, with years between the slightest of updates.
I understand there are other games out there, but none can fill the place that TF did in my gaming heart. Just the nostalgia alone of playing it and seeing old TF clans which went on hiatus waiting for the vaporous TF2 is enough for me to be VERY curious as to what it's status is.
On the long production complaints... yup, i'm complaining, and so are others. The first version of TF we were expecting was for Quake 2... The game was well under way and near finished when the TF moved from Australia to work under Valve. a year of waiting from that point, we see TFC. A year after that we start seeing TF2 screens, and nothing since. Is it that that crazy or weird that hardcore TFers are desperate to hear any info?
