Out of the Blue

Happy Passover!

If you notice stories with credits for Frans with a 3D Gamers link going forward (there were already a couple yesterday), don't think that this is because our old pal has just now begun sending in news tips. Far from it, it is simply to publicly acknowledge his contributions here, which actually have continued steadily since his official departure to work at 3D Gamers full time. In addition to continuing to compile the daily list of game reviews, because he continues to keep up with the news, Frans has continued to be an invaluable resource, pointing the way to many of the stories posted here, and continuing to play a vital role in helping stay on top of the news. Who's the man? Yup... Frans is.

Stories of the Day: Specialists praise 'armored rush' as brilliant war strategy. Thanks Nimrod. RTS playing generals?
Rampant Wild Boar Surprises Couple in Bed. Thanks doggboy. Turns out crashing boars are more interesting than first suspected.
Unemployed Man Files for $1.5M Tax Refund. Thanks Mike Martinez.
Marshmallow Peeps, from homemade sweet to technological advance. Thanks Jonathan C. Forster. Peep season returns.
Wild Science: Study: Firefly's glow is one big boast (thanks Mike Martinez). Remember this as you add more case lights.
Image of the Day: Doctor Fun. Thanks Ant.
Auction of the Day: H.A.L.E.S ( MIDAS Compressor ). Thanks Gimpy.

If you dont want web pages fucking with your browser settings you should use a real web browser.
for example Phoenix, or now Firebird, they are builds of Mozilla.

Every single ie key shortcut works in them, and they are much better.
In the options menu you have the ability to turn off the "feature" that lets www sites resize, and other wise screw with your settings. But you dont have to disable everything, you can just turn off the crap that pisses you off.

It also blocks un called for popups automatically by default.

38. Re: Status Bar MIA... Apr 18, 2003, 08:21 Bronco

I found this on m.p.w.i.i.b posted by a Microsoft MVP. I'll cut and paste the whole deal to give credit:

These are two separate problems ........
1) Status Bar:
If your status bar disappears when opening a new IE 6 browser window:

1) With (only one) IE open, click View, select: Status Bar
2) Right-click on IE's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"
3) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
4) Open Windows Explorer, click View, select: Status Bar
5) Right-click on Explorer's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"
6) Click Tools | Folder Options | View tab
7) Click the "Apply to all folders" button. (XP only)
8) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
9) Open IE to any page, right-click on a link and select: "Open in New
Window"
10)Verify that these Registry entries exist:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
"Show_StatusBar"="yes"
"Show_URLinStatusBar"="yes"

If the above steps do not correct your problem - see below:

Re-register each file and correct any possible missing\corrupt Registry
entries:

Start - Run (type, then press OK)
--
2) IE opening size:
Close all instances of Internet Explorer except for one.
Right-click on a link in the page and select: "Open in New Window"
Close the first browser window using the [ X ] (upper right corner)
Resize the second browser window manually by dragging the sides to the
desired size.
Note: Do NOT click the Maximize button, you *must* do it manually.
Hold down the Ctrl key and click the Close button (upper right)
Visit another web site, open a link in a new "window", it should now be the
desired size.
Note: some pop-up browser windows will alter this process if that is the
last one closed.
If that occurs again, you now can resolve this problem.

[Exception]
In some cases the "Remember last window size" info becomes corrupted in the
Registry.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Window_Placement"=

Right-click on "Window_Placement" and select: Delete
Note: Remember to Export the key before editing.
--
When all else fails, paste the below line into Start | Run
javascript:window.open(screen.availWidth,screen.availHeight)

Then make *sure* the above window is the last one closed.

I am so sick of my status bar disappearing and window views changing.

I've found that XP has a very strong memory when it comes to settings like windows sizes, status bar, etc.

When a pop up ad appears and the settings for the pop up tell XP to remove the status bar, XP seems to think that the user wants all status bars to go away.

Same thing with a strangely sized IE window. If that is the last window you close then all IE windows going forward will be that size.

I'd bet that the missing status bar is related to pop up ads somehow.

I love this description of one of the HALES guy's books:

The books is very easy for the mundane afficionado to read, even a non physicits can read it and understand all of its content, as well as realize how simple it is to learn physics without using an collider accelerator, and how obvious it has always been in all that surround us, in all arts, in all strcutures, in all that exist is there on metaphroe of how it works, how the very own matter that formed such structures works

Surely he didn't need to devote an entire (one-sentence) paragraph explaining how easy his book is to read and understand. I mean, with such a master of prose writing the book, how can it not be easy to understand?

Uh...he, uh...he has his bank account posted...so people can wire him donations....

Someone needs to help this man find PayPal. Seriously.

Every link has something on it crazier than the last, there's just too much. Check out his book and movie writings (for sale, of course) under "Products". Wonder what "You can do to help"? Well, it'll cost you $.40 to download the information.

If anyone ever deserved to be an internet cult hero, this guy is it.

Er...except that Frans has no real problems posting publicly. Granted, he is going through the whole "Xymph" identity crisis ;P, but that is a small issue. Does it matter either way?

HUZZAH FOR FRANS!

Wondering why IE keeps on hiding my status bar :|,

most of the LoTD posts here are 3-5 days old and have been on lots of other sites

so stay with the other sites. Obviously I'll stay with blues and his LotD that are dated no older than yesterday in general but you know maybe those view the future sites really have something

case in point the dates in the wild boar, marshmallow peeps, firefly and dr fun stories above. none older than yesterday.
