I found the artwork a little too dark and oppresive for my tastes. I'd rank the game number 2 behind AoW2, and well ahead of HOMM4. I liked the gameplay, but as you said the game devolved into uber parties...and whoever lost theirs was pretty well hooped. Still, until that event occured, it was pretty enjoyable.
I also don't care for this two expansion pack thing....better to make one really good one, than two mediocre ones. Strategy First strikes again?
Yes, still kinda pissed at the state Hearts of Iron was released in....X|

I would like it if they added new races, units, and adventure map buildings(Stables, windmills, pot of gold, etc.). I don't really like Campaigns. The only campaign I've played was in WBC2 and that didn't have a story. You just took over land

Couldn't even get past the demo |

I couldn't make heads nor tails of this game, though I wanted to like it. But there were no instructions in the original demo and I couldn't figure it out AT ALL. Then a second demo was released, apparently to address this issue. I downloaded that and found the "instructions" so skimpy that it was obvious it was some thrown-together thing.
I still couldn't understand how to play the game.

And then there's also the 5 deaths and a Lich Queen trick...

What's the point of releasing them as two separate packs, besides an obvious attempt at money-grabbing?

Sounds like they're trying to milk the cow. As I understand, D2 sold far less copies than the inferior HOMM4. I'd rather they bring out a new race in the expansion, or simply D3.
OTOH, Worms series is also a "turn-based strategy game", sorta. That's friggin cool too.
