My thanks to all those who offered suggestions on how to work out the Win2K crashing problem I mentioned yesterday. I think I managed to clear that up by removing some drivers that were causing a conflict, but since then I have been trapped in a different ring of computer hell, something has been causing crazy CPU usage that makes my machine unusable. After over 24 hours of mucking with this, I am even that much closer to my wits end than before, I should have just migrated everything to a different machine earlier, but this seemed like something where the solution was forever just around the corner. This is an old machine that's starting to display more and more flakiness (recalling the recent whining hard drive), and after years of flawless service, it may just need to be replaced. But I hate to admit defeat here, and I think I have the offending applications tracked down here, so I'm going to bang my head against the wall a bit more before completely giving up on this.

I'm with Ray. Any baffeling computer problem can be made better by the purchase of an expensive but superflous piece of hardware.

Troubleshooting CPU hoggage

Fire up your Task Manager (right-click on taskbar, select Task Manager) then click on the 'processes' tab. Figure out the name of the process that's eating up all your CPU time, and then do a search for it in your search engine of choice.

I can't see why you're bothering to figure out all the processes and conflicts. I tend to remember what's caused problems for me (like upgrading Norton systemworks rather than just installing it clean) and when my system performance drops, wipe my C drive and all my programs folders and do a complete reinstall of everything. Since I keep all my cds together in a big cd folder, it only takes me a few hours, and the system is almost guaranteed to run beautifully after that. One reason I can do this so easily is because I have a partition which is pretty much just my OS, and my documents are on a completely different drive. With the size of the problems it sounds like you have, if you keep your CDs and harddisk properly organised, you could very likely save time with a wipe.

Wow this thing is good... It guessed a mouse in 17 questions (it first thouht it was a rat at question #7) and guessed a Watch in 19 questions. I thought i had it with the watch. edit It got Giraffe in 13 questions, got headphones in 17 questions (holy moly!), it also got a floppy disk but asked too many questions (got it in 22). I stumped it with a nutria tho. GOOD LORD! It got sequoia tree in only 12 questions! This comment was edited on Mar 2, 05:12.
