Re-installing Windows is an arse because of having to get everything recognised in the registry again.
If you're removing Windows you may as well remove everything and only back up documents and then just start over.

Re-install win2k |

When I get to moments like this with my computers, I simply back everything up and re-install.
If you've installed all your most used programs and games on another drive aside from C: this is relatively easy - you simply backup your Fonts, Favorites, Email etc. from the C: drive, format it and re-install - making sure you've got all the copies of the drivers you need on another drive !
Your computer will have a new lease of life - although the operation can take you over 5 hours !

I was thinking the same thing. The rope breaking couldn't possibly cause the ceiling to come down. It's impossible for both things to even happen, unless they happened at the exact same time, or the ceiling was already damaged and took a moment to fall. As soon as the rope broke, the force would be relieved from the ceiling light, so the damage would have to already have been done, because it couldn't happen after the rope broke.

But the rope broke under his weight and brought the light and part of the ceiling crashing down with him. So does he figure that if the rope didn't break the light and ceiling would have stayed up?
He said: "I want to sue them. They have caused me more misery than I felt before." If the misery he felt before was bad enough to cause him to atempt suicide, why is he still alive?
----------------------------------------- Of course I could be wrong... but really, what are the chances of that happening twice? |

Government Fails to Block Bootleg Site |
Feb 28, 2003, 19:27 |

According to the Justice Department, David Rocci, 22, agreed to surrender the site after pleading guilty last December to importing 450 Enigmah Mod Chips from Britain and selling them for between $45 and $60 apiece.
Rocci will face a prison sentence of up to five years and fines up to $500,000 at his sentencing on March 7, the government said.
"David Rocci developed a public website that specifically catered to the underground piracy community," said Assistant Attorney General Michael Chertoff. "He attempted to profit by marketing circumvention devices to that community knowing they would be used to play pirated games." I'm sure glad the government is cracking down on this. There is surely nothing more serious that the feds could be protecting us from.
Remember, when you buy a modchip, you support terrorism.

Rule out what you can... Download memtest86 2.9 and run it. (It'll create a bootdisk and the proggie will run straight off the floppy.) This will either confirm or deny memory problems...
With flaky crap like this I always check the memory first....

As much as I like environment friendly ways of generating power, including burning biomass, I don't think we should be burning food to produce electricity. It just seems wrong.

Well there's no "manage" option when I right click my computer, To open the event viewer without a manage option, go into your control panel and then open Administrative Tools. Then open the event viewer. Check the system log and see what information it gives you.
If you don't have the administrative tools or the event viewer, you need to go to Add/Remove Programs in the control panel and then click on the button to add windows components. Select the system monitoring tools.
Perhaps the event viewer can give you information as to what device is causing the error. The problem is that Windows 2000 already spit out the most informative error message that it could before it crashed and burned--a device corrupted its memory space. The options available to you now are to check the event viewer (and Device Manager) and see if perhaps a device isn't responding correctly.
Failing any useful information from the event viewer, start removing components from your PC. Remove one component, reboot, try to get it to crash. If it crashes, remove another component, etc. I'd start with the RAM to make sure the RAM isn't bad and corrupting itself. Remove all but one module and then if it still crashes, swap in another module. If it still crashes, start with the other components. If you only have one module of RAM, well...
Anyway, this post hasn't provided anything concrete, but perhaps the troubleshooting tips will help you out.

How to fix the bloody thing |

Windows 2000 Pro is a very stable OS. Unless you just did some major software installation such as a service pack or a driver update, it's probably a hardware issue.
Recommendation: Remove all pieces of hardware from your system except for the video card and work like that for a bit. Reseat the memory and video card and check your BIOS for voltage monitoring info.
You probably have a network card for getting online so I'd suggest leaving that in your system too and see how your system responds after all this.
Time to get out the screw-driver GL

WARNING: I've never had much success with 'recovering' an installation using this method I used 2X and it worked both times. Haven't used it in a long time...
I found a newsgroup post that was heading in the direction of video card driver problems. Let me see if I can find it.

Me too. Apparantly the W2K Recovery option screws up everytime if you've installed SP3. So I was told anyway.

What I would do is pop in my Win2K disk and try to get it to repair the installation. I haven't done this for a long time but I think you need to boot with it in the cd-rom drive and then select ERD... WARNING: I've never had much success with 'recovering' an installation using this method. BE WARNED that it will restore all of your Windows system files to the originally released versions. Your first priority, once you get booted (IF you get booted) should be to install the lastest service pack. |

tell Windows 2000 to make a memory dump from the blue screen (memory.dmp). Use Microsoft's Debugging Tools: http://www.microsoft.com/ddk/debugging/ and check out the memory.dmp file. Be sure you use MS' Symbols server.
Maybe the analysis will give you clues why Windows is blue screening.

Another vote for flakey hardware, unless you can remember doing anything weird software-wise lately (drivers, especially). Of course, it never hurts to do a chkdsk on all hard drives (yes, even NTFS can have errors) and to do a virus scan. But apart from that, I'd bet on the power supply (check the delivered voltage using motherboard monitor) or the mainboard - you might want to check your motherboard for leaky capacitators as seen in http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/WEBONLY/resource/feb03/ncap.html ...
My system's crashing occasionally, too, and I'm not sure where to put the blame. So far, I've just tolerated it; often, it won't reset itself for days, so it's really only mildly annoying. But my PSU definitely needs replacement, the voltage is severely off on the +12V rail, it actually delivers something between 13.2V and 13.4V - ouch. So I guess that'd be a possible source of unstability. And I also have to check my mainboard for faulty components, I knew buying the cheapest KT300 one would bite me in the ass eventually.

However, you may want to read this first and try to use the driver verifier first tho...
