MechWarrior Movie Plans

Devlin leads 'Mech' into movie battle on the Hollywood Reporter (thanks Shacknews) says: "Dean Devlin will produce a movie based on the best-selling 'Mech Warrior' video games." The article quotes Devlin, producer of Eight Legged Freaks, as saying he'd like to get the movie into theaters within 24 months. Word is: "Jordan Weisman, who created 'Mech Warrior' 20 years ago, will play a creative role in making the film," and the article quotes Weisman as saying "The film is in many ways a coming-of-age story. It's set 40 years after the Mech Wars have ended and introduces a group of young heroes in their late teens and early 20s that have grown up in peaceful and prosperous times."

I doubt they have much choice. The "official" BattleTech storyline is now DarkAge and I suspect most of the stuff that's initiated now will have to conform to that. FASA/Microsoft is probably able to do some stuff prior to that by virtue of their existing licenses but I would expect any new developers of games or movies to be locked into DarkAge plotlines. Just a guess though.

Fight during peace and prosperity? Bleh! What about the middle of the war when all the houses were vying for planets.. you know, real hard core original old skool battletech. Damn Fisher Price My First Teen BattleTech Movie producer idiots.

It's only fair.

Good movies are always turned into crappy games, so we need this to balance it out. The way I figure it, this will make up for most of the Jurassic Park games out there.

The whole yin and yang jazz.

Well, BT:3025 had a lot of problems. For one there was no context; the battles were meaningless. For another, four on four 'Mech fights are dumb. Add in no cost to jump around the system, no workable command structure, no non-'Mech units, etc. and the entirle BattleTech aspect of it beyond the bare minimum was lost.

OTOH, the fighting was way cool, and an absolute blast to play most of the time. It was rather fun to take a lowly Urbanmech and ambush hotshots with that AC up their wazoo....

This movie seems to be set in the DarkAges timeline, the current B-tech universe. That in itself isn't a bad idea, necessarily. The two DarkAges books so far are pretty damn good reads at least. And all the BattleTech books have been filled with buddy/bonding stuff of one sort or another. But yeah, I'm not terribly optimistic either. Probably will end up like "Dawson's Creek" with PPCs.

SMA: "Can't they put Battletech back in print instead?"

If you meant the miniatures tabletop game -- FanPro:

There are links to the miniatures company that took over the line from Ral Partha on the page as well.

I can see it now, you have these young mechwarriors who are all "tight" with eachother and they embark on some lame adventure that's been watered down so the "average" young person won't be alienated by all the battletech lingo...There will be some lame love interest and crap. Yeah I'm cynical and pissed off, but mechwarrior is just one of those things that shouldn't be converted into some palatable "thrill ride" movie for the average person like all of these other movie conversions recently...why can't they make movies like aliens or blade runner anymore? Or has our culture just gone to shit?

I agree, although I really would like to see some CG mechs in action

Anyhow, this seems like the cinema equivalent of "shovelware", where everyone and their dog is making a video game movie after the success of 'Tomb Raider', just like everyone is making comic movies after the 'X-Men' and 'Spiderman' blockbusters.

All I can do is hope against hope and pray against all odds it won't completely suck.

P.S.: I very much enjoyed Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, so you can probably disregard any sense of movie taste I might have

This story sounds like it would be much better suited for an
anime series than an live-action movie.

Who the hell am I kidding. They're going to ruin yet another good game.

Can't they put Battletech back in print instead? This could quite possibly beat Wing Commander as the worst of an already bad lineage of game to movie crossovers.

This sounds like that ass-terpiece 'Robot Jocks' from the late 80's-early 90's.

You know selling dlc before you patch the client doesn't impress upon me the need to support your shit. -massdev
