PC GTA Vice City This Spring

Despite assurances that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City would eventually make its way to the PC (story), not much has been heard lately about progress on a port. Rockstar Games Announces Grand Theft Auto Vice City for the PC is the press release that changes that by officially announcing the PC version, and setting its release date as spring of this year: May 13 for in North America and May 16 in Europe. The release makes mention of some slight enhancements this version will offer over the PS2 original: "The PC version will possess enhanced features including improved graphics and sound, additional PC controls, as well as several options for players to customize the game."

Not sure what your talking about I can run it on 9700pro with full 8x Anti-Alaising and antistropic filtering enabled at 1280x1024 without a sign of lag. have you upgraded to catalyse 3.1 drivers??? It might be that pesky p4 problem try AMD

GTA3 was an awesome game but the coding on PC was a bit poor. It ran like crap when it first came out and I had a Radeon 8500 with 2.1ghz P4 even in low resolutions.
Last night I reinstalled it now I got a 9700 Pro and it still ran like crap. Im talking less than 10fps at times.

Thats in 1024x768 with no FSAA or Anistropic settings enabled.

Then, we'll see if the company understood something from its mistakes or not. Rockstar has surely received an avalanche of e-mails about the game issues + rants and they can't just ignore them.
Time will tell...I hope you're wrong

36 it'll be a straight port and no mistake. Sure it'll have the vague enhancements they promise in the news article (see my last comment) but I'd put a whole heap of money on the fact that it will be exactly the same as GTA3 on the PC (performance issues, hardware compat issues etc) Sad but true. The cash cow for these guys is PS2, whatever this iteration sells on the PC will be pocket change by comparision, might just pay for the parking lot of expensive cars

Sure glad I played this on the PS2

I don't know why poeple bitch so much for the "W00t" expression. Stupid or not, I like it and I use it as I please...

Moving on, for the ones who think that GTA3 runs smooth on nVidia cards only: You're dead wrong. The game has issues with many kinds of hardware compositions. I've tested the game on various systems equipped with GF4Ti, GF3, GF2, Radeon 7500, 8500 and 9700 with 3 different motherboards (Intel, Via and nVidia based). Mixed results here, including the fact that the game stuttered on GeForces, no matter what type/drivers or tweaks involved (performed a little better using intel platforms, in my tests).
We're not talking about XBOX here, but PSX2! (BTW, Splinter Cell works like a charm on ATi cards).

"Hear me now and believe me later" - Rockstar doesn't want to make the same mistake again and code a piss poor piece of PORT that has issues on a vast majority of hardware.
Anyway, time will tell and the clock is ticking.

...improved graphics and sound = well, duh, they have to do that anyway to make the darn thing run on a PC (direct sound and higher res support)

...additional PC controls = duh again, mouse

I liked GTA3 on the PC, although I thought it was a 'better' PS2 game. Lets hope that they allow you to install the entire game to your hard drive to improve the performance, unlike GTA3 when we had to wait for a patch

Don't know what you people are getting so excited about... this is basically GTA3 in a different setting and some graphics upgrades.

What should really be awesome is the GTA4, where they finally introduce some multiplayer action.... that should be something to 'woot' about.

well i seriously doubt other chipsets ran the game any beter. the savage4, kryo2 or even the parhelia all work as well as simiar nvidia products in most games, but i doub't gta is one of them. if you are seeing this as a good reason to criticize ati your are either sorly mistaken or some nvidia cronie who is hoping to monopolize the indursty, and if the latter most definitely the former aswell. either way, your arguments are absurd.

You misunderstood me kyleb. I agree it is the games fault but I was saying it has issues with ATI cards. Wasnt blaming ATI at all, in fact there was only one issue with ATI that I recall that was ATI's fault and that was the fogging being unplayably thick in the game when the Catalyst drivers first came out, and was duly fixed by a patch shortly after.

Thats why I was hoping they code it better in Vice City and actually test it on cards different to nvidiots.

LFace, it is not a grapics card company issue when the game never tested on anything but one companies hardware with no regard to the alternitves. the fact is that ati folows the directx standards beter than nvidia by a long shot, the game was coded to run specificly on an nvidia card with little or no reguard to breaking compatablity with the directx standards. the game damn well should have been made to work on multiple system configurations or labled as an nvidia product only. fortunaly i had a gefoce3 at the time so it didn't bother me then but it is a shame i still can't get simmilar preformace out of my 9700pro, and there is no reason to blame ati.

Its an ATI issue.

Rockstar never tested the game on cards other than nvidia and as such they didnt optimise it well enough (or so Ive read anyway)

Thats why someone on a 700mhz PIII with a TNT2 can run the game better than a 2ghz P4 with an ATI card sometimes.

Sounds like a personal problem LFace... It ran fine in my old P3-650/GF2 machine. Sure the fps drop at times, but I don't think I ever went down below 20fps...

As far as this game goes, I fondly remember playing the original GTA and on a side-note, wouldnt mind someone making a high-end, super duper 3d version of the original!
