Star Wars Galaxies Contracts

Star Wars Galaxies features delayed on GameSpot (thanks Ant) is an article revealing that some of the features planned for the upcoming Star Wars MMORPG will not be included when the game launches, currently scheduled for April 15 (story). The delayed features include "player-owned cities, drivable vehicles, player-generated missions, and the Dark Jedi character class." The story is based on a forum post by LucasArts producer Haden Blackman, who explains there's "a plan for implementing the postponed systems within the first seven or eight months after launch." The report also points out that "many of the delayed features are not immediately critical because it will take some time for players to attain the necessary levels in order to use them." There is no word on how this impacts the plan to ship an expansion about six months after the game's launch to add space flight and combat to the mix (story).

hi i am coming out with a new game called fredricksons funland

it is a massively multiplayer it costs 3.41 per month

the game will feature the following:

40,000,000 square kilometre maps
functional atmosphere with different layers

this game will be updated constantly but unfortunately there will be a delay in the following features:

super-realistic moden weapons

..."player-owned cities, drivable vehicles, player-generated missions, and [no] Dark Jedi character class."

And apparently, the box the game comes in is empty.

These to are really a shame: no "...drivable vehicles, player-generated missions...". The first is such a shame in a SW setting, but can wait. However, the second one is what really set the game up to be something different, something which would allow a much broader, emergent gameplay experience to come up.

But I don't doubt they'll incorporate these features, albeit much later, seeing what kind of longterm plans they have for the game (they were talking 'expansion pack' from the get go!). Granted, it's a moneygrubbing way to go, but it will get there...

Here I go taking the polar opposite again.

Anyone who read the original developer post that Gamespot took this story from? The devs did an excellent job explaining why these features got the axe from *release* (they will add them later). Compared to the other things they would have had to axe to keep those in, I'm glad they chose what they did.

Its not like I'm outside the loop here either, player cities and player-generated missions were part of our plan for our corporation's economy, we'll just have to shift those back.

I personally wouldn't mind if it was delayed to incorporate these featueres, but for something as high profile as this, delay is not an option. For the accelerated timetable which I'm sure they were put on, I'm amazed they got in as many features as they did.

Anyhow, still looking forward to this one

-DSR

Well i dont care at all about the cities, no drivable vihecles suck major ass though.

And not being able to be a dark jedi...?? so there will be no saber fights at all cause everyone will be a good/light jedi? or de they just fight some npc's? or just chop at some rats and spiders? Comon!

Still....i never wanted to be a jedi. I just want to hunt down rebell scum in my white, shiny stormtrooper armor

*sigh*

Unfortunately SWG doesnt seem to offer anything new to MMORPG. 'Healer' groups will be discouraged as they wont get any XP from being in a group (why not just stay out of the group and get ALL healing XP ?). Jedis will only be found by being a powergamer but then again this is no different to any other game. Its the same old story with nothing new.

AC2 for all its badness tried to create a new formulae but it didnt stick which is a shame. A big gamble and it probably wont pay off so other companies dont want to break the mould.

Blaster vs melee balancing is a bit strange. Blaster should win almost 90% of the time unless you are a jedi. Why do you think we USE guns instead of knives.

Its not the cough that carries you off but the coffin they carry you off in.

23. Does this surprise anybody? Feb 7, 2003, 04:59 Creston

This is the way MMORPG's have been going for years, and it's also the way the entire PC gaming industry has been going for almost a year now. Promise everything on the box, deliver absolutely nothing.

Simcity 4 still has no multiplayer, nor the ability to upload and download cities from their website, both of which were specified to be in the game.

*shrug*
As long as we keep buying it, why do we expect them to change it?
Seriously, the ONLY WAY Sony and LucasArts will get their shit for this game together is if people just REFUSE TO BUY IT.

But I guess 80% of the PC games crowd is more than happy to pay 50 bucks + 15 a month for the privilege of beta testing, and Sony is laughing its way to the bank again.

The problem with SWG is Sony knows to make money all they have to do is release a stable game not a good game or a game with content.
How can that be such a big problem when the game is being developed by LucasArts, who also own the license?
I'm assuming that they were intelligent enough to get some control over release of the game.

Indeed. I agree. Daoc worked into its stuff. Also I admit, it missed a few as well that it promised.

To be honest, the biggest problem I see... companies need to just stop talking about a game untill they go into beta. Or are just a few months away from it. Maybe announce hey were making this game, its this environment, but dont give out any feature details, dont start hyping it at all. To much hype leads to this kind of crap.

-That definitely has to be the single most detailed "we're not going to be able to ship with this stuff" message I've ever seen. Every other MMORPG dev in history (that I've seen) just goes "our product isn't complete, buy it anyway, shut up and wait".

-There isn't much they can do if the features aren't going to be finished in time for intended release. I don't have a problem with them not including certain features due to the features being unfinished. Their only options are to:
A.) Postpone the game completely until the features are implemented fully, then release it on date X.
B.) Release the game without the features, and bring out a patch with the features by date X.
C.) Half-ass the features like lazy idiots in order to weasle you out of $50, royally fuck up the game, and end up fixing them by date X, if that date ever comes (due to the publisher cutting funds because of low sales).

Note that the features end up being done at the exact same time or later for any one of them. B seems to be the best situation for the gamer. You get the game earlier, and the unfinished features don't screw with the code.

I don't know how anyone can believe the "future feature" line when we got games like WW2 online.

I don't htink you can compare the two. There is a lot of difference between Sony and Cornered Rat Software. Namely, Millions of dollars.

This doesn't bode well when they are saying that features they said will be in the game at launch no longer are. People better be careful. They are trying to now cut down on the hype that their game has generated to lower the expectations because they know they can't meet them.

Buyer beware.

My guess is the this game will end up having nice looking characters and a nice chat system but that is all it will ever be just a glorified chat board for SWG geeks.

I suppose people who never played an MMORPG before wouldn't give half a shit, but those of us who have past experience in this crap filled genre know what we're talking about.

By the time any one is high enough level to be able to utilize any of these features

That is the very reason MMOGs suck. That attitude. That design.

There should be player-owned cities in the game from day one. There should be no concept whatsoever of "high enough level" that we presume takes a very long time to attain. That's ass game design because it isn't any fun at all.

Player-owned cities was one of the features that made this MMOG stick out from the rest. If it did release with the game, but they used the ole work 80 hours a week equals fun philosophy that every other MMOG uses, then no one would ever really experience the feature that was gonna make the game worth getting in the first place...

Man, I look at this list and all I see is stuff I didn't really expect the game to have in the first place. No player owned cities? Who gives a fuck. By the time any one is high enough level to be able to utilize any of these features, I bet they will be in, or close. If not, who cares? Nothing they are putting off is really a huge deal, except maybe the drivable vehicles, but I imagine those will be in soon. I am not really upset by this. I think most of you are just looking for an excuse to complain about MMORPGS.

Not that this is gonna stop me from buying the game, because i will eventually. But it will make me wait till a bit after the release. and by a bit i mean around 4-6 months.
