Out of the Blue

Happy Groundhog Day! In spite of that article yesterday suggesting the annual emergence from his hole is actually based on the need to breed, rather than to act as some feral Al Roker, I think I continue to consider him a harbinger of the coming change of seasons. Unfortunately it's so sunny around here today that not only did he see his shadow, but I doubt we could pressure him to change his story. Six more weeks until spring is not great news, as this has been one freaky-cold winter in these parts, and the sooner we can bid it a fond fondue, the better.

But if you've ever listened to the director's commentary in the newest version of the DVD, they talk about how it was the screenwriters' impression that he spent something on the order of millennia in that day.

I always thought that the smartest way that this concept was written into the script was the part about him learning the piano. As soon as I saw how good he had become it was clear to me that he had spent at least a couple years in the "groundhog loop" - or however long it takes to become that good at the piano.

Of course I could be wrong... but really, what are the chances of that happening twice?

"Vedas was a casualty of a new epidemic: a surge in the recreational use of pharmaceuticals, even as the rate of illegal drug use holds steady or declines."

Recreational drug use is a NEW epidemic?

'"It's the ideal situation it's legal and it's free," said Vedas' brother Rich. "And most people assume that if a doctor is giving you something, it must be fine."'

Uhmm...no...most people assume that if a doctor is giving
you something, you should read the directions and take no
more than the dosage states(note: not RECOMMENDS).

I read about this a week ago. I also read the chat log.
While part of me is sad that another kid is dead, a bigger
part reminds me that another STUPID kid is dead and hopes he
wins a Darwin this year.

I mean, come on...a smart recreational drug user buys
BETTER s&#$. And a dumb one buys more s&#$. Of course,
only dopes smoke dope!(I learned that on a poster back in
high school ~,^). I prefer drinking, though.
And vicatin(ermm...but only for back pain.......)

at the risk of sounding like an evangelist, or an AA meeting 'I'll make you a promise'. Blue has done this for the last few years, if we can agree to do this thing next year the joke will be complete'

or of course Blue (or a database literate person) could link to yesterdays threadid rather than todays.

That site is no good. I believe there were days not shown in the movie!

There definitely were. The site points that out (sort of) with this statement:

There were more days implied, but these are the only days that were either shown or explicitly implied.

But if you've ever listened to the director's commentary in the newest version of the DVD, they talk about how it was the screenwriters' impression that he spent something on the order of millennia in that day.

Have to say, the movie makes more sense that way. (If any movie about metaphysical oddities can...)

The posters from yesterday couldn't post the exact same things they did the day before to make the joke complete.

Nevermind.

That site is no good. I believe there were days not shown in the movie! There had to be! He couldn't have learned piano so quickly! So labeling the days with numbers makes no sense!!!

Isn't this is the same as was used last year??

Guess that just makes it worse that I didn't get it. Around here Groundhog day is unknown bar a light-hearted film with Bill Murray so when I read yesterday's I thought "oh, so today is that day" and when I read todays I thought "oh, so today is that day". The actual text is forgettable enough so I didn't think of a connection until I read these comments...

Cheers,
Quboid

Given the increased public exposure of this "holiday" in recent years, I'm surprised it hasn't gone mega-commercial like all other holidays marked on our calendar.
