Nintendo's Next Move

Nintendo Eyes Next-Generation Console Launch (thanks the_culture) reports: "Nintendo Co. Ltd., creator of "Pokemon" video games, said on Thursday it planned to launch a next-generation home game console in 2005 or 2006 in a move to restore its clout in the lucrative home video game market." The article describes how GameCube sales have lagged behind expectations, a situation the company's president Satoru Iwata attributes to the more than a year head-start enjoyed by the PS2. The article goes into plans for games interoperable between the GC and the GBA hand-held, the possibility of a "not imminent" price cut for the system, and the financial situation Nintendo finds itself in, and quotes the Nintendo prez' vision of what the future holds for them and their competitors: "We will get ready for a (new) battle in 2005 although foreign game developers are now saying that rival next-generation systems won't come until 2006."

Marky- "Your quote from earlier on was the fact that 'Gamecube' made better hardware than anyone else. Where, in fact, hardware wise the edge hands down goes to Xbox. Also not pointed out in those numbers is the fact taht the Xbox comes with built in broadband, and a hard-drive, ability to play your own soundtrack, dvd playback etc etc."

Well, if you're posting or reading these forums now, chances are you already HAVE 'a hard-drive, ability to play your own soundtrack, dvd playback etc etc.' from your PC. DVD-ROMS are pretty standard- they have been for about 4 years. And about the built in broadband - Nintendo didn't really invest highly with putting their consoles online, because they didn't see much profit in it. I think I remember reading something a while back- Microsoft was losing money for every Xbox they sold. If this is true, I think Nintendo was correct in their decision. Nintendo's hardware is not better hardware specification wise, but they sure did put alot of thought into mass production for cheaper prices, debuting at only $200. Besides, it doesn't really matter how much power xbox HAS, it only matters how much power the games use. Otherwise, that's just some wasted cycles. I think that's why Xbox was selling so well. IMO, people bought xbox just because it was acclaimed 'fastest console', not necessarily putting to thought WHO was developing games for it. However, these people lucked out, because many game producers are creating (and have created) games for PS2 AND Xbox, but leaving out the 'Cube. For whatever reason, from the very beginning of the next-gen consoles, many companies saw the GameCube as 'unprofitable'. It is this very misconception, I believe, which has caused Nintendo sales to do so poorly.
