New Jedi Knight Shooter?

HomeLan Fed is reporting on a tidbit dropped during an Activision investor's conference call that a sequel to Raven's Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is expected to be released during fiscal 2004 (mid 2003-mid 2004 by more traditional calendars). There is no official confirmation of this report, nor is there any indication which combination of the franchise's splintered titles this project might carry, as it could be considered Dark Forces IV, Jedi Knight III, or Jedi Outcast II.

The thing I don't/didn't like about the last release was the reprogression through the force powers. If I have to play my way to force jump or force pull again I don't know what I'll do.

Exactly. At the end of the last game, (spoiler) Kyle gives up his light sabre, so naturally he's going to lose all his force powers, too, and we'll probably be playing the first couple levels with regular weapons again. It was more tedious than anything for me to get through those first few levels with no force powers.

How is doom 3 being release during fiscal year 2004 a bummer? This post here says fiscal year 2004 is mid 2003 to mid 2004 which is pretty soon isn't it?

I think the Atari was before my time. I'll see if I can grab one on ebay...

What are we gonna do with all these 'youngins'?

I've enjoyed every one of the LA FPS series.

Some more, some less but enjoyment all the same.

I would hope for a game set in the time period of movies 4-6 - the movies the youngins had to watch on VHS.

The thing I don't/didn't like about the last release was the reprogression through the force powers. If I have to play my way to force jump or force pull again I don't know what I'll do.

Here's a bummer - In addition to the JKII sequel announcement - Activision said:

DOOM III will not be released until fiscal year 2004.

Maybe they will spend nore than 18 months on this one. Im not paying $50 for more jump puzzles in the Star Wars universe.

Jedi Master: "PS we know Raven isn't doing this, anyway. They're doing Quake 4 and a console game right now, that's all they said they're working on and they've never done 3 projects at once in my memory."

Raven does have three full dev teams though. They've expanded lately (caught this a while back on a Hoekstra interview IIRC), which makes you wonder what else they might be up to besides Quake IV and a console game...

It was a scheduling thing. Mark Hamill wasn't available when they did the voice recording, just like Jeri Ryan wasn't when they did the voices for ST: Elite Force. They got her to redo it all for the expansion though.
It wasn't money, though. After all, Raven DID get Hamill to do at least one voice for SOF2!

Also, Creston, I don't think you've read "Traitor" yet, have you? Some big things happen with Jacen in that book, followed by some others in Destiny's Way (like Vergere and Luke's converations). It was interesting too when Vergere finds out that Anakin was the one that became Darth Vader. "Little Annie?? Oh no!"

The Jedi Master

PS we know Raven isn't doing this, anyway. They're doing Quake 4 and a console game right now, that's all they said they're working on and they've never done 3 projects at once in my memory. Perhaps Ritual will do it after they finish their first Raven hand-me-down, ST:EF2?

First, there was Dark Forces. Then Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. Then Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast.

Any bets this new title will contain "Jedi Outcast II" when in fact it should be "Dark Forces IV"??

Good one Apaullo - I bet nobody thought of that.

Edit: I realized my sarcasm might be too subtle, and I could be taken for a dullard, and thus this disclaimer.

i agree with ray, a return to the design of DF2 (or JK1 if that be your want) would be a return to form. the aspect that i most miss from JO is the sense of space that the previous games employed. the levels in the previous installments were vast narratives with some really inventive touches; this was more the case in JK than DF1, but still. there were some really good aspects to JO but story-telling and good narrative (traditional failing points of Raven i find) were not in abundance. it's a shame as Raven get given some really good IP and they seem unable to make them shine, they're ok, but not great.

anyway, my dream list: a subtle, flexible stats system, ala NOLF2. a combat system for the sabre ala severance:blade of darkness. some level design that's out of this world. oh, and a raft of interaction.

that would be cool-aid.

IIRC they DID ask Mark Hamill to voice Luke Skywalker in the Jedi Outcast game, but either he was too busy at the time, or he was too expensive (which seems kinda odd, since Mark loves doing games, and I'm sure he'd be willing to talk shop?), so that's why they had to go with that Bill guy.

But yeah, hopefully they'll be able to cast him for Jedi Outcast 2.
Also, I hope there are going to be a few more Star Wars characters in it, Han, Leia, Chewie?

Perhaps (now that I've started to get into the story more), they'll do something about the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, and you'll get to play as Anakin! (grr, our luck knowing though, we'll wind up with "Oh no, I don't want to use the Force, it has to be about more than just using it for goodness, it's bigger than that, I'm a whiny little fucking turd who's scared to get his nail torn" Jacen instead).

Ah, Dantastic, your system specs and you saying how much you enjoyed JK brought back memories. JK needed a 133 mgz box, I upgraded from my 486 for that game. Here's hoping for an old school star wars shooter (like, "classic" trilogy) with better multiplayer and the people who played the parts doing the voiceovers. I mean, c'mon, what can Mark Hammil be doing these days? And I would be all over Dark Forces 4, Lando's revenge, where you take Lando and pay back the Empire for screwing Cloud City (prior to Return of the Jedi).

A true sequel (with regards to interaction and gameplay) to the original Jedi Knight, please!

Heck, I would even take a new Dark Forces, if needed.

No Obi-Wan, though...

Wondering why it cannot be all three names in one :o,
Ray

Now THIS is just great news. Jedi Knight II was the biggidy bomb where I'm concerned. I played through the single player 9 times straight, then spent at least another 50 hours just summoning Reborn and chopping them to bits (best ever I did was 12 Shadowtroopers and Tavion all at once, hey, I sure ran a lot.. <G>).

Never got much into multiplayer because the Saber Combat sucked in it, and by the time Raven got around to fixing it so it was like single player, I had already moved on.

Hopefully they will incorporate a better multiplayer experience this time, I remember on the forums people came up with some great ideas of BountyHunters vs Jedi, where the BountyHunters had weapons and a rocketpack, the Jedi had lightsabers and the Force. Raven never did implement that, hopefully whomever's doing it now WILL do something like that.

Jedi Outcast II, bring it on

Creston
