NVIDIA DX9 Gunmetal Demo

NVIDIA's Gun Metal Page offers downloads of a playable demo of Yeti Studios' Gun Metal, "a futuristic action packed experience where you take control of the fully transformable, prototype combat vehicle known as the Havoc Suit." This is "one of the first available games to utilize Cg during its development," and it also takes advantage of some capabilities of the new Direct X 9 (story).

ati users can use 3d analyzer(1.69) to get the game to run on their 9700s or whatever card u have.

looks alright on my 9700 but nothing special - game is a bit poo though(early build could be) seems like a cross between mechwarrior and transformers(kinda g@y)

...the only thing that I really have to say is that transforming from biped mech to jet mech is cool. Otherwise, I have seem comparable tech demos and the gameplay, at least in its current form, is a bit shallow.

So wanting to be a Transformer when I grow up :o,

i thnk u have to enable Cg emulation in the 40.xx drivers and later on non nv30 based cards in the advanced tabs somewhere ,could be wrong it mgiht jstu always be on, but Cg emulation is mentioned in teh docs (not running 40.xx atm due to them reporting incorect EDID info from my monitor, bug i thoghut they'd killed once and for all in 38.42 :o( )

this option simply beeing there at all hints that Cg will never run on any card other than nvidia too...

Well, the demo works, altough I don't se the big deal.
Got Win2k, 2,0 P4, 512 Rambus, gfTi4600, 41,09, dx9. Runs smooth and all but nothing special about the graphics or anything else. I haven't really read up on the new things, CG and dx9. But don't we need like a gfFX and some new nvidia drivers for the new stuff to work?

Oh well, looks like it might be a fun game...for 20...30 min. Reminds me too much of X-Com Enforcer (doing the same thing for 50 levels)

Yup, no GunMetal for me as proud owner of a shinny, new Radeon 9700.

Game's own log file reports simply, "No Supported 3D card detected". Haha! Poor 9700. : )

Ah well, couldn't have been as entertaining as the DX9 ATI demos anyway, especially the animusic one. That thing is amazingly cool.

I had the same problem,
i noticed that there are wmv[video] files installed with the demo, tried to play them but they wouldnot play with windows media player former to version 9beta...
my guess was then that the demo was trying to play one of those video with no success. I reinstalled WMP 7.1 [downloaded from MS site] and after a reboot, the demo worked.

hope it helped..
just in case, i found that with google :
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html
and followed the instructions for winME as it's my operation system
Hope this will help too

You should check out what you say before you post. This is to show off Cg. CG works with most new video cards. It is just a new programing language to make all these vortex/pixel shaders and such easier to program. Here are two links for you. First is nVidia's Cg page and the next is something on TomsHardware explaining Cg and Render Monkey(ATI).

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=cg

http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20021004/index.html

I have no idea why it doesn't run on a 9700. Maybe nVidia had some deal with Yeti Studios to detect the video card and not allow non nVidia cards to work on the demo. That way ATI can't say hey look yet another game that 9700 kicks but on.

I am downloading it now just to see if i can get it to work. It might be something else on the other persons system.

When you think about it releasing a demo like this to show off Cg is kind of weird (to me anyways). I mean most people that Download it wont know what the heck Cg had to do with it. I mean it doesn't show that Cg is better to program with. What i think they should do is have a contest where someone has Cg and makes a demo and someone has whatever the normal thing is and see who does it faster and the best.

Cg Cg. Cg. Cg Cg Cg. What is Cg?

I may be seriously out of the loop on this one, probably because am seriously behind the tech curve with my current pc and haven't been following current trends. I am waiting for that golden ap that will force me to get a system that will actually run it (and run it well, hopefully).

Funny, my GF3 runs this demo just fine. And that Cg SDK ran just fine, too.

Cg isn't geforceFX specific, most if not all geforce parts can use it with the 40.xx drivers and above i beleive, it's meant to be scaleable anyway, though i admit i really dont know that much about it at all.

Why would you ATI guys think nVidia would get a demo for ATI cards and put it on their site. The text on the page screams "CG" at you, come on!

*runs back to play with the CG development kit*

Gun Metal
-CG support for all materials
CG: 'Motion Blur' effect for the plane, proportional to speed
CG: Realistic 'Water Refraction' effect
CG: Further effects under consideration
DX9: 'Occlusion Query' for optimised rendering and realistic flare effects
DX9: Use of 128bit floating point buffers, enabling use of high contrast colour and overflows (such as retina bleach)

To show off CG? You do realize no one has a card that does CG, at least not for another couple months until the GeforceFX comes out.

I don't care if it is only for nvidia's cards, but please damn say so on their site. It wasn't even mentioned in any documents with game, just that you need a DX 8.1. They didn't even say if the DX 9 enhancments are in the demo, like the 128bit floating point buffer or that occlusion query. Plus there's no DX9 card out right now from Nvidia on top of the CG.

Since it seems to be just a standard DX 8 game at the moment, they should of had it available on their site to every brand. Then when someone with an old 8500 plays it, they'll think of those CG effects that will be on it and then will gravitate towards purchasing the nvidia card rather than the 9700.

So why did they release this if of all the new features they mention can't be done on any of their customers current hardware.

15. Gunmetal Demo Dec 20, 2002, 22:53 MajorGeeks

I like it, seems like it could be fun considering this is not supposed to be representive of the final product. I didnt care for the controls, I prefer the mouse moves everything, like a FPS, but this one uses mouse for aiming and only moves the camera angle when you hit the edge of the screen, which is a problem either getting there OR getting there by mistake and losing where your at.

Im guessing by the controls that this is a console port, something that drives me nuts as I play FPS on PC, they should do ports to PC so that you can play them normally, ie; keyboard and mouse. The controls would keep me from buying it, ill wait and see what the final demo has for it.

Otherwise, its a great idea, although it sounded like a transformers game and could be a ton of fun.
