help with optimizing tenebrae and port it to quake 2!

the lighting in quake and quake 2 is totally different from what i have heard. it would be easier to actually make a tenebrae mod for quake 2 than to port it over.

why did they do it ?
probably just for the kicks, and I am sure they and also use delphi coders can learn a lot from it

7. Quake in Perl!!! Dec 17, 2002, 13:14 Ratty

Yeah, that's what I want to see. Quake rewritten in pure perl. Don't laugh! It could be done.

Delphi (...) is much easier to code than C. I'm eager to see what this game looks like under delphi.

That's entirely subjective. Personally I think there's too much text in there - It's tiring to go through all those begins, ends and whatnots. I like the compact, mathematical style of C a lot better.

On the other hand, if we're talking about easier to LEARN that might be true. For the very same reason that I don't like it - lot's of language tokens are textual. Might be easier for beginners.

Why one would want to convert Quake to Delphi is beyond me, though - so much work, just to make it slower and non-portable... (yeah, yeah, I know, there's that Delphi-clone for Linux as well, but there are other systems besides these two). Can't we just focuse on the useful conversions? Like text mode Quake?

Right on.

I want to see how long a full rebuild takes in C vs Delphi.

Assuming one knows (or wants to learn) object pascal, Delphi rocks. While C/C++ gets most of the attention these days for game programming, Delphi is more than capable and can often match C's speed (almost, but not quite), but is much easier to code than C. I'm eager to see what this game looks like under delphi.

well if nothing else it's a nice plug for Borland: "Delphi is so fast you can run games with it!". It's a tech demo basically - just think, to rewrite Quake II in Pascal! Next - Quake II in QuickBasic!

The conversion was done by the work of volunteers who have worked hard over the course of these ten months. Conversion of the game DLLs have almost been completed, and we are now focusing on fixing conversion bugs in the source code.

Why...?
