Out of the Blue

Today is DOOM's birthday! Brace yourself: the grand old game is nine(!!) years old today. Wowser!

I managed to knock myself offline for a good bit yesterday when simply rewiring the LAN here at the Blue Tower... I think I may have some flakiness in my hub, there doesn't seem to be any other explanation consistent with what's been happening (basically I can't figure out why I was offline then but am back online now).

While I was acquiring some new cables for this rewiring project (if only I'd been prescient enough to pick up a new hub), I happened through a Target (pronounced, of course, tar-jay) and found the most amazing thing. They are selling a product called the "electrostorm," which is one of those globes that you plug in and the interior fills with little visible electric beams which will focus towards any portion of the globe that is touched from the outside. I'm not doing a great job of describing this, but if you saw it you'd recognize it from science class and science fiction movies as a pretty familiar sort of exotic prop. Anyway, the amazing thing here is just how much the prices have changed on some things over time, because this item, which assuredly would have cost hundreds of dollars in the not-too-distant past, was all of $19.99!! This is definitely worthwhile for those of us who can't seem to get the technique down for Creating a Plasma Ball with our hands (thanks Fletch).

Play Time: The Hounds of Zeus's Soccer Ball Game. Thanks =Gambit=.
Link of the Day: A Woman’s Guide on How to Pee Standing. Equal time from yesterday. Thanks -=(Maverick)=-.
Stories of the Day: Marvel Comics to unveil gay gunslinger. Thanks [PIT]SlayerAODsk.
Man saved by condiments. Thanks Keith.
Wild Science: NASA: Water, water everywhere on Mars. Thanks Mike Martinez.
GPS may provide early earthquake warning. Thanks [MP] Wolverine [MP].
Weird Science: A Mighty Wind Against Waste. Thanks Severian.
Is it Science? Genesis World Energy. Thanks Eric Rose. Related Cartoon: Dilbert.
Image of the Day: Eeeek!! Thanks Ant.
Auction of the Day: 1988 Hovertechnics Hovercraft. Thanks Chris Johnson. Eels not included.

There is just something, well, special about freezing your best friend mid-air, watching him fall and crack to his death; squishing him beneath your full-sized foot; catching him with a mine; etc.

Thinking that is what friends are really for :o,

Nine years? I'm 25, but sometimes I feel like an old, old man... I remember playing Doom at a friend's house, and listening to Denis Leary's 'No Cure For Cancer' that his brother had just bought... Anyway, is it just me, or does parts of Satyricon's 'Fuel For Hatred' sound a lot like the music from Doom?

189 in 2:44:74 is my highest total, though I do cheat by turning off the sound. I can't stand listening to that background chatter.

i loved doom as much as anyone but duke nukem was the game that got me hooked to multiplay.

Same here. I played those MP levels over and over. I count that and the time I spent playing TFC in the early days of it's release as the best online playing experiences I've ever had.

i loved doom as much as anyone but duke nukem was the game that got me hooked to multiplay. when quake hit the streets and gaming over IP started it blew my mind. everything since those 3 games just seems redundant.

btw, does anyone listen to black box recorder...yumm.

31. Ah DOOM.... Dec 11, 2002, 00:27 pancreas

Oddly enough, I only got really hooked on it once I tried Modem-to-Modem play, since I couldn't use cheats in multiplayer.

I have fond memories of trying to kill a Cyberdemon at our spawn point using only fists and pistols. We were lucky if we could get more than 2 shots before being blasted apart by a rocket.

Geez, I remember being in a computer labv at school on #doom the minute it came out. I was blown away by the camaraerie of loads of people trying to ftp and coordinate mirrors for the download. In some sense, that moment was the dawn of the "scene".

26. gay gunslinger Dec 10, 2002, 20:23 WarPig

The Rawhide Kid series, beginning with the first edition "Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather," will run about 22 pages and have a suggested retail price of $2.95.

As we join our story, the Rawhide Kid is face to face with his nemesis, Jersey Faldwell, who the Kid has caught red handed trying to burn down the Best Little Bathhouse in Texas.

Kid: Ooooh, just ssstop it you big ssilly! Don't make me pull out my big gun.

JF: Not you again! <falls to knees> Dear God, please grant me the strength to not lose my lunch.

Kid: <gun drawn> Oh please sister, quit being so dramatic and drop the match.
(pause)
Oh... my... god... where did you get those fabulous boots!

JF: These old things? I picked them up at the Boot Hill Boutique... and... dang you... SINNER!!

Kid: Yeah. What-EVER.

Not that there's anything wrong with it.

Did that condiment story remind anyone else of last season's incredible Sopranos episode with the Russian in the woods? Every time I hear about that on the news, I can only picture Pauly Walnuts squeezing the tiny bag of relish!

>>> I wonder if DOOM 3 will be released on 12/10/2003 (shareware/demo or full version). That would be nice to celebrate a decade!

That would be DAMN cool. Although I was hoping we'd be playing it before then, id seems to have a habit of shipping stuff right before Xmas. If I were a betting man, that's where my money would be.
