I just started reading this thread (he, he, he...ignored it in the morning, figured that it could not get that bad :)) so I apologize if I am re-stating an idea or missing other points.
Secondly, I am going to avoid the really nasty parts for now-it is so much easier that way. 
The problem with racism is that it is generally this "not quite evil" thing, yet is put forth time and time again. To avoid offending people, let me use myself as an example.
Nobody is born hating Ray  people. Yet, how do people end up hating Ray people, at least without ever knowing Ray people? People tend to hear stuff about Ray people, perhaps hear a number of jokes about Ray people, and it is possible Ray people may even make comments about Ray people out of some...peculiar sense of empowerment. What is the problem? I mean, it is just a few jokes about Ray people and I do not particularly wish anything upon Ray people. It may just be cool to pick on Ray people or it is an easy outlet to take out my anger on Ray people.
However, I am Ray and that sucks!  I do not even know these people, yet they only say bad things about me or have some incredibly poor perceptions of myself. Hell, some of them are actively angry at me and want to hurt me, yet I do not even know these people. How can they hate me? Why do they not even care about the facts? How have I lost without having ever started?
The "strength" of things such as racism is that they are such "simple" things that people can either accept or just joke about, while growing larger and larger.
Everything will offend somebody somewhere; that is a fact of life. Heck, a joke-I presume that we all know humor and enjoy having something make us smile-is us laughing at somebody or something. That sure seems like something cruel...yet it is not, at least it does not have to be. Even though it does not have an actual physical manifestation, we all (or mostly) know that there is some type of balance between joking with a person and picking on a person, even though both can be written of as "just being funny."
You cannot take offense at every little thing, yet we cannot presume that nothing can be offensive.
