Battlefield 1942 Update

The Battlefield 1942 Website has a quick SitRep on what's on tap for the World War II combat game. They describe the difficulties in getting the Linux server debugged that's holding up its release, describe what priorities are being followed for development of the version 1.2 patch, address refresh rate issues under Win98 and WinME that they will not be able to fix, and outline their commitment to preventing the use of cheats wherever possible.

Who are you to tell me what I am looking for? What is unique about bf1942 is the way you can play infantry too, and get the feeling of being in a true army, where everything is controlled by your team mates.

yeah. for bf42 to be truely realistic I think you should only get one life. When you are killed your cd key is terminated.

Well, nothing but the models themselves This sometimes leads to expectations of realism... If you just want a vehicle oriented team based shooter with an even playing field for equipment, well make one. If you have the "WW II look" going... people expect something like, well, WW II. I know I'm in the minority on this but what puts me off BF 1942 is simple -- when I see a Tiger I, I expect it to *be* a Tiger I. It sours the game for me in what othewrwise (with other models / settings) probably would have been a very fun shooter. IMHO, if you don't want the substance of WW II, use some other visual style for your game.

That being said, I still thinks it's a good / fun game... just not exactly what I wanted, but what is?

It seems like I'm in the minority... I think the Infantry aspect is awesome. My best games are ones where I am rarely needed to crawl in a vehicle. But thats jsut me.

In addition, I never really thought of the weapons being unbalanced (grenades, bazookas, etc.). I don't really use bazookas very often because I can't kill people well with them, but they go thru tanks like butter. I will concede, however, sometimes grenades are a bit overpowered. Frankly, the incidents in Berlin have more to do with poor Russian tactics than overpowering grenades (who here thinks its smart to have 6-10 people all run down the same alley?), but I can see where they should be toned down a bit.

Personally, I've always disliked CS. The first time I ever logged on and saw people jumping everywhere, I immediately exited and went back to Strike Force. But I know some people like that kinda stuff so more power too them. I'm just happy that that silly ballerina crap doesn't work in this game.

I fervently agree... I wish they had a sprint mode. Tigers scare the piss outta me and I'd love to demonstrate my respect for them by hauling a$$ in the opposite direction.

Ultimately, as stated by others, this is a team game. I'm quite happy if I only get a few kills but managed to ensure my team always had a critical spawn point. Nothing annoys me more than some guy racking up kill after kill at an enemy spawn, but meanwhile our team has no spawn points and is losing tickets like crazy. End result: that guy gets the gold star but our team lost again

As far as the patch is concerned, I'd be estastic if they fixed the issue with spawn points not being spawnable after some games begin. If they tweak the weapons, I can live with that... makes no difference to me.

Best of luck.

Stop stop stop with real world comparisons.
There is nothing in BF1942 modeled after the real world...NOTHING. Pure action fun fun fun.

The hitcode is definately being worked on as well as the bandwidth requirements. They have a long list of things they are going to fix which is good for everyone.

Read this.

"Balthaser: Getting the feel nailed down for the weapons in a first-person shooter is one of the hardest things to do. I knew this coming into the project and I made it one of the top three areas we must succeed in in order to have the product succeed. So, this is now one of my highest priorities - to get the handheld weapons fixed up as soon as possible - especially the close combat. We're working on it. The new patch may have some new hit detection code working - I wont know until I fully test it though."

Hehe... arcade games don't count

I think the only real problem is the network code. I've played on a LAN and have had no problem killing people.

It's not a bazooka, it's an anti-tank weapon. It's designed to penetrate the armor of the tank, not just explode on impact. Because of this, there isn't a lot of splash damage from the rockets. It's like this so that one guy with an anti-tank gun can't take out an entire squad of guys like they do in RtCW with the Panzerfaust.

I agree that there are a lot of network problems with this game, and that is my #1 concern. I'm not worried about overall gameplay, I think it's just about right. It's not uber-realistic like Ghost Recon, and it's not super speedy like RtCW. I do wish you had a sprint mode though, 'cause if I saw a frickin' Tiger Tank I would run a hell of a lot faster than that =P

I wasn't boasting about my FPS skills or comparing CS to BF1942 as much as I was pointing out why a lot of people seem to have a chip on their shoulder about this game. I think that people who have grown up in the genre will be more able to accept BF1942 because they've been able to accept all the other trends and changes in gameplay to this particular genre over the years. That was my point.

I think for good clan/squad play there is more required than just the issues you guys raise. Rather than go into them (I'll post them over at EA or Dice's forums), I'll just say a few other things.

First off, Dr. Evil, there's a good reason he brings CS into this, and it can be found at: http://www.gamespy.com/stats/. If you notice, Counter-Strike is the top played game out there right now on Gamespy. 1942 is however in the top five as of this writing. Those of us with long CS experience will tell you that between designer changes in the game and the rampant (and well documented) cheating going on in CS out there, a lot of CS players are sick of it and looking for a new home. So although you may not understand or agree with his reasons, that's why PsycSui brought CS into it, and why I said what I said about it. We all come from different backgrounds here, so let's try to be cool about it when these little philosophical differences arise ;).

PsycSui, you should have told me I could count my single-player and arcade experience, because by those credentials, I guess I could claim I have been playing FPS type games for 20 years ;).

Finally, I think a lot of you will find that if you take some time and exercise some restraint when you do infantry play, a lot of the problems with missing will suddenly vanish. Check out the tips on the BF1942 homepage, they will help.

It is undeniable that there are problems though and they DO need addressed. I hope EA acts on them in a timely manner, because I enjoy this game, and after 2 years of CS clan play, fun is a good thing to have again.

Here are some flaws with the infantry aspect of the game. If you shoot a rocket right next to an enemy he wont die? Yea right! How useless do u want the basooka guy to be with his 8 count rockets?
Ive had the jump on a enemy and put bullets in thier back near point blank only to have them turn around and kill me easily. They need to improve net code because many times ive unloaded into an enemy and hit nothing. And yes, I lead the target. While I'm at it, they need to implement a basic hud for voting. I don't understand why alot of todays team based games don't do this. With Tribes 2 it was so easy. The concept of this game is real cool, but they need to fix the technical issues pronto.

I totally agree with you. However I would like to point out a serious flaw on top of the flaw itself.

THE only REAL problem this game has, is, (lacking proper wording), the ability to shoot anything unless your luckily chosen at random that your bullets will do anything.

That IS what the GAME is supposed to BE about. Yet that basic, primary function, flat out does not work. I gota say, I got more experience in FPS games than the pope(!) bleh..but I digress. None the less, the games primary function does not work correctly. It's to bad, cause with all MY experience (lol), this game ownz me, but I find myself quiting once I get killed by someone with one shot, after emptying 2-3 clips on him. head to head.

FIX the PRIMARY function of this game...and the problems will work themselves out. period.

blah blah blah blah

what the f--- are you people bringing up CS over and over and over for? Noone in this thread has even mentioned CS other than to say shit like "Its not CS" Well, news flash, no shit it isnt, and thank god for that, cuz I hate CS. You are the only one mentioning CS here and talking about people comparing them together, when you are the only one doing it.
BF1942 infantry combat sucks. I'm not talking about the fact that its suppose to me more difficult than other games, but there are some big problems with collision, point blank shot with a bazooka at someones feet not doing shit, bullets seemingly just passing through the target(collision again). I'm not talking about lagged conditions, where what it appears to be doing isnt necessarily correct, I'm talking about in a large lan game with dedicated server, hit detection is just horrible. It's like a roll of the dice any time you pull the trigger. A real sign of obvious lack of infantry testing, and I'm hoping they fix it asap, cuz I really like the game otherwise. Stop assuming everyone wants CS with vehicles. This game is new and original, but it has some "issues" at the moment like it or not. The sooner they fix them the sooner I will be singing the praises of bf with the rest of you.

First, we must understand what we're dealing with here. People comming from a CS background won't gel with this game easily for many reasons. But the biggest reason is the infantry aspect. Sure, they dig the vehicles (just like they do in jeepathon_2k), but they haven't figured out how to shoot their guns yet. They find sniping to be too difficult, since they're so used to shooting someone in the foot and watching them die. They're frusterated 'cause they're not racking up a good kill/death ratio. They're PO'd because suddenly the best game out there is something they're not very good at. 2 years of CS experience down the drain.

The truth is, for a lot of players, CS is their first experience in real online deathmatch (ok, it's not deathmatch, but I think you know what I mean). Sure, they've honed their skills. They can MP5-snipe with the best of 'em. But now they find that the one game that's better than CS is too hard.

I have 9 years of deathmatch experience, starting with the original DOOM. I played Duke Nukem (the most overated game ever), Quake (on a 486 100Mhz), Quake 2, Quake 3, Rocket Arena, CTF, Urban Terror, RtCW, Global Ops, and finally, Counter-Strike. I have so much experience in these games, it's not hard for me to jump into a new game and learn the ropes. It's natural to me now because I've been doing it for so long.

But these Counter-Strike people... they have no idea what real FPS skill is because they don't have any real exposure to the genre. To them, it's all about saving up the dough so they can get an M4A1 Carbine and rack up the points. And now, they're making the same complaints about BF1942 that they did about Global Ops. But I'm telling you, if they had ANY real experience with FPS games, they'd realize how Global Ops and BF1942 have revolutionized the genre.

Global Operations (a very sad story of terrible network code for such a solid foundation) had the best weapon model of any game out there. Shooting was so hard, it made standoffs a sweaty adrenaline-fest. There was no holding down the trigger, there was no running around like retards shooting at eachother. There was a reason to lay low and flick the trigger lightly instead of emptying your clip in 2 seconds. It was about accuracy. It was about your skill with your weapon's trigger. It was solid. Unfortunately, it died.

BF1942 is in second place with a super-sweet weapon model. It's so good that being a sniper is exactly what it should be: the hardest job in the game. You actually need skill to shoot a moving target. Isn't that good? I think it is. 1 shot to the head kills no matter what gun you're using. The assault rifles are powerful but innacurate, so you really have to burst your shots (I use 1-2 shot bursts). The SMGs are weak, but reliable in close quarters. The rocket launcher is good for 1 thing: destroying vehicles.

The truth of it is, BF1942 takes more shooting skill than CS. It takes a good trigger finger and an accurate crosshair. It takes good thought and a killer instinct to know how to anticipate your enemy's moves.

You also have to understand that this game is about balance. With so many vehicles, it was probably hard to find the right balance. but DICE did it. The truth is, if you could run and move in BF1942 like you do in CS, the vehicles wouldn't be worth as much because they wouldn't be as deadly. When you see a German Tiger Tank comming over the hill, it's appropriate that you shit your pants, turn your tail and run. It's good that 1 vehicle is going to win the fight against 1 soldier, but 5 soldiers will take down a vehicle. That is an appropriate balance. It is what the game should be like.

Now, granted, we all want to use the vehicles. But I've kicked just as much ass being a soldier as I have driving a tank. You just need to learn that you play the soldier differently in this game. You're playing a role on a team when you're a soldier, you're not playing AWPWHORE because that's what gets you the most kills.

The truth is, in BF1942, the most important thing is the win. It's not your score, it's not whether you got to fly the plane or not. It's all about helping your team win the round. And until CS newbies see that, they're going to keep posting their complaints about how the "FPS (it's all FPS, btw. Not just the part where you're walking instead of driving) part of the game sucks."

So, I've decided to ignore their close-minded, under-exposed oppinions. Their main gripe is that they're so loyal to CS that they hate to see another game come along that's better. It's like people who are loyal to Intel or AMD. But brand shouldn't matter! If it's a faster processor, than use it! Who cares who made it! The same thing goes for a lot of CS people who are fanatics.

There were a lot of Quake fanatics too. There were a lot of Duke Nukem fanatics. There are still a lot of Quake 2 fanatics. It's the step away from fanaticism that will help them embrace the best game to hit the genre to date.

That game has more strategy than an RTS, yet it has the action to sustain the adrenaline junky. That game is Battlefield 1942. It's for thinkers, it's for gamers, and it's for real. And it's about damn time.

I agree that the infantry needs a bit of work, but I also am glad they have simultaneosly shied away from the bunny hopping style of quake/unreal and the painful simulation style of many "tactical shooters". The style of gameplay is JUST RIGHT, imho. All it needs are some collision fixes and some damage tweaking on weapons (bazooka, grenades, etc). The style is just right.
This is one of the first games where I could really have fun with a wide mix of infantry and vehicles. I don't agree with those who complain about the vehicles. The vehicles have plenty of detriments to keep them from being overpowering (as you discover the first time you get in a plane, for eg.). An infantryman faced with a tank usually needs to get help. This makes sense to me, and makes the game more fun, not less. A tank will be wreaking havoc on an area for a minute, then the players will start switching to bazookas, etc. or a plane or will bomb it, or a scout calls in artillery, and the balance shifts back. This is part of what makes the battles in this game so full of variety and fun.

Whoah, Texican, you present your points in a valid and thoughtful manner, and don't jump to irrational conclusions. I'm not sure if a lot of people here will be able to follow.

I personally think the issue that some people have with infantry is that the age-old FPS "jump, shoot, dodge, jump" doesn't work as well as they think it should. You can't fire a machine gun accurately while strafing around a person that is strafing around you. Of course, I find this to be rather realistic, and I like it. A group of three guys spaced out well with cover can take out an alley full of enemy soldiers, IMO, and that's a good thing.

The one thing that sucks with infantry is that on small maps (like CTF Berlin), you spawn as a Russian, and there are enemies way down the street just heaving grenades up. I've seen 9-10 kills with one grenade, just in the timing. More diverse spawnpoints might eliminate some of that.

Anyway, I can't wait for the update, I'm looking forward to seeing this game developed into something very special. I know that personally I've been waiting years for a game like this, and I have put aside WC3 and UT2K3 completely for BF 1942.

Of course, your play style is your style, not mine heh. Over the last two days I've spent a lot of time close up and personal in Stalingrad doing point to point team dm and the real problem I have is the point camping ability of tanks and grenade spam (although it does reek when I nail a guy with a bazooka rocket and he lives heh). I've had some sweet infantry fights on those maps. Humor me, what are the issues?

my problem with this game is the fact that the infantry combat is horrible. the vehicles are what made the game, the devs knew it would be revolutionary because of the vehicles and slacked off on the infantry fps side of things. when they fix the huge list of issues of infantry combat then it will be alot better. until then I'll spend my time in a funner game where I dont have to get into competitions with teammates to grab the limited vehicles available

Guess it's time for another point of view. My game experience is 3 years of Quake 1 (mostly the TF mod, and DM), 2 years of CS, DoD on and off from Beta 1 to the present, 8 or so months of Opflash while CSing, and BF from MPDemo to retail (and yes there's more). Roughly, that’s five years overall from the early days of MP to now; so I can understand most if not all of your points of view here.

EA and Dice did something most game makers haven't these days: they got it right the first time. They knew what they were making, made it fun, made it pretty, and short a few glitches along the way have stuck to that vision. This isn't DoD or CS folks, don't compare it to them, this is entirely new. It's not geared toward the newest player's being able to have fun (ala anything HL/CS/DoD oriented), or hacked to death (again, HL, CS and DoD can't say that) and minus any vehicles on the same boring urban setups. It also isn't the so called "reality" of Opflash (with the very real problems of playability, balance, net code, or tiny patches you can't find anywhere or play without) without the fun and playability it should have.

BF1942 is a different kind of animal. It's frantic, it's fast, it's full of possibilities, and tools to accomplish your missions. That fun comes at a high price for a player's hardware, but time marches on, and what worked for Q3A and HL doesn't necessarily apply for what the newest stuff does. The maps are more realistically sized (yet not too big), the tools are a lot more powerful and plentiful (each has a set of positives and negatives), and just because you have a mouse and some manual dexterity doesn't mean you can rape anything that moves. The hardware issues need some work yet though (video cooling was a suprising issue I had with this game, and proved critical to how it performed), and a decent bit of system tweaking was required to make it smooth.

It does have some issues needing addressed though. The spam boxes on the urban maps need to be a lot less accessable, bazooka's need to be more powerful and have more splash damage, grenades need to be less powerful. Battleships need to be able to take more damage than destroyers, map load times need reduced, and a few other small issues. Overall though, a big "A" for playability, fun, competitive potential, balance. A "B" for net code and hardware requirements. A big "A+++++" for EA's apparent commitment to both keeping this game fun and polished for it's customers, and need I really mention the anti-cheating statement? FPS makers could take lessons from EA here.

That's my 2 cents, and you're entitled to your own ;).
