Battlefield 1942 Status Report

EA's Battlefield 1942 Website has a new update thanking those who are playing their World War II shooter for making their launch successful, going on to outline outstanding issues and their to do list of what they are working on. Here's most of the post:

To Do List Update
For those of you who have shared your thoughts on where we need to go next with BF1942... keep 'em coming. While we can't answer everyone's feedback personally, we are taking notes. As it stands our "To Do" list is pretty big.

At the top of the list:
- Linux Server
- 1.2 Patch
- Map Editor
- Mod Tools

We also have some updated information about the top list items. The Linux Server is currently going through the debug process and we're working hard to get it out as soon as possible. The 1.2 patch will address many of the issues which have been brought up on the forums and boards concerning bandwidth optimization, client prediction tweaking and general stability (sorry, Digger, we're not going to add a grappling hook!) The patch will also deliver the highly anticipated Map Editor. As for other mod tools, we're looking at what it would take to modify the existing dev tools for the mod-community. Stay tuned for more updates.

Why do people think the long delays are copy protection?

Is it the ages spent showing the "loading." screen? Or is actually something really something vaguely connected to copy protection? I say this because the "loading." screen's long delay has absolutely nothing to do with copy protection. I have 2 computers right beside either other and I frequently play co-op on these with a friend. Whenever we finish a map, the server loads the level. When that's done, the client(s) load the level. While the server is loading, the clients see "loading.".

Stupid system? Yes. Unique system? No. In Medal of Honour, the server loads while the clients see a black screen with the scores. The reason this is as annoying is because MoH maps are much smaller with much less textures and so on to read, so the server's delay is shorter and the client's loading time is shorter.

I believe there is a brief CD check at the end of a level, which probably is useless, but that's only a few seconds. The problem is that BF1942 levels are huge is disc space size, and possibly they aren't loaded as effeciently (possibly - I have no way of knowing what it's like).

Whoever started that rumour (and I know it's no one here) should have researched more.

Cheers,
Quboid
