Why do people think the long delays are copy protection?
Is it the ages spent showing the "loading." screen? Or is actually something really something vaguely connected to copy protection? I say this because the "loading." screen's long delay has absolutely nothing to do with copy protection. I have 2 computers right beside either other and I frequently play co-op on these with a friend. Whenever we finish a map, the server loads the level. When that's done, the client(s) load the level. While the server is loading, the clients see "loading.".
Stupid system? Yes. Unique system? No. In Medal of Honour, the server loads while the clients see a black screen with the scores. The reason this is as annoying is because MoH maps are much smaller with much less textures and so on to read, so the server's delay is shorter and the client's loading time is shorter.
I believe there is a brief CD check at the end of a level, which probably is useless, but that's only a few seconds. The problem is that BF1942 levels are huge is disc space size, and possibly they aren't loaded as effeciently (possibly - I have no way of knowing what it's like).
Whoever started that rumour (and I know it's no one here) should have researched more.

The copy protection is pathetic. The CD Key Serial should be enough anti-piracy protection IMO. Quake 3, Half Life, RTCW etc.. dont require the CD at all to play online because you need a unique serial to play.
It just annoys the piss out of me when I refresh a server in ASE and it says 30/32 players so you join it only for BF1942 to take a minute to load up because it scans both CD Drives for the game cd, checks its original, and then starts to load the game. By the time I get in to the server its bloody full!
And I aint using the in game browser because the menu is locked to 60hz which would make my eyes bleed after a minute on this 21 inch monitor. Its damned painful just setting the keys up.

Sound issues and such.. |

Agreed. The sounds issues a lot of people have is weird. Everytime I run the game I have to disable hardware acceleration through DXdiag... ah well, still a great game. What I also find odd is that while everything on the ground runs smoothly when I hop in a plane other planes tend to stutter a lot...making it very hard to hit them..:)

64 player servers? |

Come on! Why doesn't EA set up some 64 player servers? Some of the maps really could use them!

Agreed, Mr_44. The copy protection for this game is just plain evil. I could see if it would CD check when you first start the game but the way it works now is a slap in the face.

My only real gripe is the huge downtime between maps. It's simply unacceptable. That, and it could be a bit quicker to escape into the menu when you're playing the game.
I really want to love the game, because it's ridiculously fun when you're actually playing it, but sometimes it seems like that only represents about 1/3 of the time it's running.
People have been saying that this is partially due to the copy protection scheme... if this is true, EA must die. Of course, I said the same thing during the whole Ultima IX fiasco, yet I keep coming back.

I ended up trying and returning a few soundcards for Battlefield 1942. (I was also tired of some other problems I'd had with my Audigy under Windows XP)
The Hercules Fortissimo III works the best from what I've tried on my Windows XP machine. It's one of the few cards I tried where running sound settings maxed doesn't consume lots of resources in Battlefield 1942. The sound quality, especially the positioning, is good also, and it seems to be stable. The Fortissimo III has a retail price of only $50. :-) I found mine at CompUSA. If you get it, make sure you install the new 5.01 drivers from www.hercules.com.

The "Ishootawholeclipatyouandyourstillrunningaround" issue is quite annoying too.
I think that's what it means with client side prediction. However, don't expect huge changes - you have to learn how to shoot. You can't run, jump and fire an automatic rifle. I have learnt to stop, crouch, aim and fire all within half a second and my aim has improved hugely. Look at real soldiers - to aim, they do exactly the same thing.
There is still room for improvement. At ranges where you could not miss in real you still miss in the game. At ranges where you could not hit in real, you hit in the game. I hope these things are improved. Also, aside from these, the above can't-shoot-while-moving thing is over done.

What made it bad was the netcode and the fact that you can't tell if they actually got hit.
Soilders now bend over like you swift-kicked 'em in the nuts when they get hit with a gun. It's still sometimes hard to know when they get hit--but that helps. The net code still kinda sucks. Specially when you're playing on a machine that really shouldnt be running a server *cough*cablemodempeople*cough* EA's got 50 some odd servers running on their OC19 so that helps But there still needs to be some tweaking done. DESPITE that, the game is completely cool. Oh, and there could be something done with the load times...

Actually #3 if you go onto the better server's out there (like EA servers) it is much better. But yes I do wish that they would add something to show that the person is getting hit.
One other thing...please fix the single player game, improve the AI's as they seem too brutal and point acurate when flying a plane but can't drive/stay in a tank.

I've only played the beta, maybe it's better now... But one of the reasons I didn't jump to buy the game was the bad netcode. I just have some deep internal conflicts with the idea of a shooter, where it's really hard to shoot people. The soldier/soldier combat system was just BAD. Weapon sounds were/are cheesy, too but I guess that's OK, I could live with that. What made it bad was the netcode and the fact that you can't tell if they actually got hit.

Hrm...no mention anywhere of hardware compatibility fixes, because I'm getting really tired of the issues my soundcard has with the game (and only THIS game). They've known the problems exist since the single-player demo and they STILL have not resolved them.
Sound issues aside, it's a great game. But it could have done with more polish and bug-hunting before release though.

This game is great, but it really needs some patches for it to reach it's potential. The publisher, EA, aren't reknown for their post release support by the way of patches so I was worried. However, the developer, DICE, are - it was only a few months ago the last Codename Eagle patch was out. Now that's post release support!
Looking forward to the level editor too. I guess mod tools are nice, although I don't intend to get into that ... apart from proper German flags!
