X-Com & Firaxis?

A post called Firaxis rumour confirmed on The Gaming Lounge has what they are calling confirmation of rumors that a deal is in the works whereby Firaxis would acquire the rights to the X-Com series of UFO combat strategy games that have arguably achieved cult status, along with Infogrames' other legacy Microprose titles. They cite a messageboard post by Julian Gallop as proof of what's going on, offering this Q&A with Firaxis' Sid Meier as further weight to the story, which they first reported on a while back.

There's nothing arguable about XCOM: Defender's cult status, it's one of the games, along with MOO2 and Civ that made Microprose great.

The sequels, of course, are an example of why that company is no longer with us...

...I never got into X-Com the first time around, but it would be nice to see if a developer could update the classic for the market of today.

One third of the way through Mario Sunshine :D,

indiv id doubt fraxis would do something like that, they are very much a strategy game developer and in their short history have put out some great titles in the genre. personally i think this is the most perfect developer match the xcom series could get.

I hope, if they really are going to make a new X-Com game, that they stay true to the original with the research and manufacturing and base development, etc. If they're going to just use the license to sell a standard rts or fps then I'll cast my vote to just let the series fade away.

These guys aside from the original developers are quite possibly one of the only ones that could do the franchise any justice
