As part of their Activate press event in Ireland, Activision has issued a pair of new, high resolution DOOM III screenshots, revealing more from the futuristic first-person shooter in development at id Software. Here are the two images:

Doom3's tech for reducing super-high poly models to low-poly with bump maps is pretty cool. The curves aren't very curvy, though. That really stands out in places. It's likely you could increase the poly count.

The rock texture is bad though. The rock formation is blocky and does not make sense. Intuition can tell you this as much as twelve weeks of Natural Geology.

In the first pic (with the window), a nice touch would be to have a slight humidity mist inside compared to a completely arrid exterior. The pipes should also visually intersect with the wall trim, rather than protruding with no hint of interface.

I'm amused that a lot of the critisizing comes down to artistic critisism. The colors, for instance. Every screenshot is in shades of pale green. The color gives a hint of emotion, but not when it is everywhere. Your vision adapts. After an hour of that your players will be left with the impression of washed out colors everywhere. You'd have a far better effect if you subtly changed ambient color from area to area. Subtle, but perceptable. The above is difficult to percieve.

The shadows are also significant. They're solid everywhere. I like shadows, and I love these compared to most games, but these are too harsh. What I would LOVE to see would be shadows that are different depending on what sort of creature casts them. Pixel and vertex shaders anyone? I know Doom3's big thing is unified lighting and shadowing, but it's something I'd like to see, if possible.


I'd also like to see something like the Metroid Prime helmet. Doom3 seems to be about bringing the horror really close, and I think a helmet could rub that in. It could be very frightening when a monster smashes that glass in, causing blood to run into your eyes, breaching your little envelope of detachment and protection. You could increase that effect by believably providing HUD enhancments for the player, giving them useful information and especially vision enhancement. They will FEAR losing that in the rain.

By believable, I mean information such a device could have, such as energy left in a power pack, or the status of connected pieces of powered armor. Such a helmet would not know how many bullets you have left in your clip, or if your right ankle is twisted.

It could also add something to the death sequences.
