Richard Garriot Interview

There is an extensive interview with Richard Garriott on GamesFirst, talking to the former Ultima designer during E3. Topics include his current project Tabula Rasa, the effort put into creating a solid codebase, the kind of setting it will take place in, the gameplay they're aiming for, custom missions, player interactivity, plans for an episodic content release model, his contribution to NCSoft's Lineage series of MMORPGs, his take on console-based online games like Final Fantasy XI, the use of voice communications, important MMO features, and lots more.

"Profit is a dirty word"

So, if someone offered you more money to do the same job you do now, you purists wouldn't take it? You would ask that the increase in pay be anonymously donated to a charity? "No thanks boss-man, the satisfaction of a job well done is enough"

Riiight.

And as for the game industry, it is a business, designed to make money, period. Any idealists that want to make a game for the sake of "pure entertainment" or "pure art" either don't ever get started, fail in the middle, or limp it out the door and watch the sales figures go nowhere as their studio closes.

It would be nice if it didn't have to be that way, but it is, and the system is quite a beast to try and tackle and change.

It's a fact of business, no profit = no business.

Wake up and smell the capitalism.
